Hi Everyone, ever wanted a built-in garage door opener in your Porsche 996 911 (2000-2005)? Tired of the one on the key chain or marring up your visor? In this DIY video, I show you how to use your existing remote and wire it into a switch you can mount in a blank spot in your center console. When you are done you have a totally stock look and all it cost you was the cost of the switch and a bit of wire! It is an awesome mod/hack. The switch is a two-position switch so you can control two doors independently. I show you the places to solder for a Genie and a LiftMaster garage door opener and tell you how to trace the circuit so you can use any opener with a micro switch! The total time is about an hour and you’ll be super psyched with the results!
Here is everything you’ll need:
• New Switch: Porsche 996 Targa Shade Switch - 996-613-119-10-A05
• Key fob garage door opener remote programmed for your garage door(s)
• Some two-conductor wire (like speaker wire) ! 12” 18-24awg
• Some single wire ~12” 24awg
• (5) female spade crimp-on connectors
• Wire cutters/crimpers
• Soldering iron
• Solder
• Multi-Meter/Continuity Checker
Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll get right back to you.
We hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please give it a “Thumbs up” and Subscribe to Heidi and Franny’s Garage for more videos to come. Also, click the little “Bell” by the Subscribe button to get notified when we release new videos - usually Saturday mornings.

very nice, a few sugestions, cause I am that guy. Add replace the battery to a new one because you don't know how old it is or how long it satt in the box from the store and replacing it requires taking this apart again. and tinning is a great idea bonding to copper not wire as some wire is aluminum and try to not use aluminum wire with copper.

another fantastic video. only thing I would add would be to maybe add a dollop of hot glue on the wires at the circuit board as a bit of strain relief. I think this is the first video of you doing a 'hack' that I have seen! Bravo.

I know it's a small detail, but I love the warbling ovals you draw around things. The other graphics are very nice as well. It's the little details like that which set you apart of many other gear heads on KZbin. Thanks for all you do.

I bought my 996 turbo a year ago. Like you, I'm loving it. The first mod I did was an Alpine head unit with Car Play. This is a big upgrade. I'm at the stage where I'm going to start doing some performance mods. However, thanks to you, your (my) garage door opener will be the second mod of many. Great video - thank you

Heidi and Franny's Garage Hi there, a little update from France: have just completed wiring the switch to my garage door remote. It works like a charm. Now all I have to do is fit it to the car. Unfortunately, due to work commitments, this won't be until December... Will keep you posted.

It may have been mentioned already, but you do have to remember that you will need to access the remote to change the batteries every once in a while. Great video! I'll consider that for mine! Robert.

Fantastic video - thank you for taking the time to go into detail on each step. I just completed this project and I found one thing that was different. I used the PSM switch to tap into power for the light on the new garage door switch. What I found was that the outer posts on the PSM switch were both hot when the lights were on. With the lights off, only one was hot. What ended up working for me was to use the two side posts for the garage door switch, and connect one to the left-most post on the PSM switch (when facing it from the driver's seat), but then to connect the second post from the garage door switch to the GROUND (center one by itself) on the PSM switch. Using this setup, the garage door switch lights up correctly.

Franny,I always enjoy HFG videos. Thank you for this one. I would like to add one other possibility for the opener. If you buy a used home link from most any car, eBay, you can do that hack with it and hook it to the power in the car so no battery replacement in the future. I have used the phone prep plug that floats around in the center console. Brown = ground, yellow/black = phone mute, green/black = switched 12v, red/green = un-switched 12v.

Nice work as usual, but... why didn't you install a 12V-to-3V DC-to-DC converter and get rid of the battery?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 7 жыл бұрын
:) Ya know, I think I actually have one of those kicking around somewhere... The battery in those things last for years... Easy and cheap to replace, but you bring up a good point... If you leave enough wire you can route the remote far enough back that you can fish it out the back without popping off the front cover. I should have mentioned that... Thanks, f

Is it possible to power the remote control with the car battery as opposed to its own power supply? Because the small battery will drain and you will need to remove the “U” cover to access it. Thanks
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 7 жыл бұрын
+jooggie17 possible yes, but a pain. Just leave more wire so you can get to it from the back of the console.

So you have to tear your dash apart every time it needs a new battery?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. That battery seems to last forever, but if you add a little more wire you can place it forward enough that you can reach up and pull it out and replace the battery. That's what I did but we still haven't needed to replace it!

I was wondering.... could you have made the wire lead longer to hang out from the back of the dash so when the battery in the opener needs changing it is as simple as reaching under the dash rather than pulling the face plate off the dash? I am sure in time that removing the face plate would be more a problem, causing it to crack.

Would you list the brand and model of the remote you used. I’ve opened 2 different remotes and found they are not anywhere as clear on where the +/- as well as the actual “switches” are positioned. Gets expensive buying remotes that can’t be modified. Thanks for the very instructional video.
