Keep you 996 up to snuff with this simple series of DIY videos. Porsche garages hate it. 😁

SUCCESS! Total time: 3hrs, 10 mins. My new starter is in place thanks to your fantastic DIY vid. My '02 996 starter is located center line back of the compartment. I was able to leave plenum #2 in place. My new BOSCH starter cost $285. Local shop wanted $795 to do the job. I learned a lot with your help. Thanks again! Any upcoming vid on the Oil Pressure Switch?

This is an excellent description of how to DIY!

I rebuilt the starter on my friend's 997 due to a slow start when the engine was warm or hot. The commutators on the armature were dirty and after a thorough cleaning, it is like new. Although not absolutely necessary, I replaced the brush plate for about $30.

I just did this on my 2001 996 Cab, following this video all steps of the way. How about you do a video on replacing the Y cable? Otherwise known as battery starter cable. Note some people say you have to lower the engine to get the cable through to the battery connector but another fix is apparently to soak the plastic head on the battery end of the cable in hot water until it is soft enough to remove and then you can feed the cable through without lowering the engine and then you put the plastic head back on. I would love to see you do this and show if the soaking in hot water trick really works. Also the problem many report with starting after the car is warm seems to be as a result of the Y cable and not a starter motor issue at all.

Maybe a DIY on replacing the sound deadener sheet?

Great tutorial 👏🏼 Is this the manual box ? I have 1999 tiptronic and local Porsche independent garage claiming they need to drop the gearbox to do the job (much more labour and more money). 🤷🏻♂️
@fcpeuro2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dad, yes this is the 6speed manual gearbox, however the process should be the same for the automatic.

Looks like the job is doable without removing the rear plenum?
@fcpeuro3 жыл бұрын
You are totally correct, the rear one does not need to come out, however, we already had it out for another DIY that we were filming at the same time.

@@fcpeuro Just did the job following your video. Thanks. No need for a magnet or specialty tools, just extensions, ujoints, and wobbles.

1:55 TIP when disconnecting battery cables, you always disconnect the negative terminal first, and when installing the battery cables, you connect the negative terminal last. No shorts to ground that way.

Awesome video - thanks! My 01 996 starts slow when warm Some say that's the starter or the cables that go to it, or both. I got a new starter but I am wondering if I also should replace the cable (it's the one that goes to this connector box on the right side). Any recommendations? Is it hard to replace that cable?
@miketdavies2 жыл бұрын
Did you replace the cable? You can usually see if it's melted, I understand. I'm doing only the cable myself shortly (3.6 "later" cable)

Should I use locktite on the Starter bolts that attached to the body?

Hi Shane, not necessary for this application.

My car's 13 years old with 96k miles. Should I replace the starter? I already replaced the alternator. Starts up just fine
@GarthGoldberg3 жыл бұрын
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've got 135,000 on my original starter. It looks rusty, but still starts the car just fine.

A pick and magnet pick up tool are essentials, not "nice-to-have" in my book.

is the 997 3.8 lt the same process and location?
@fcpeuro2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mario, the idea will be the same for the 997, same location!
