Definitely an overlooked maintenance item as the M96 motors become older. Thank you for covering this issue!

Good stuff man! I'm going to be helping a friend change his vario cam rails this weekend. Supposedly it can be done with the engine in. We shall see! I'll be making a video on that as well. Thanks for showing me some of what lies ahead :P

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Hmm… i suppose maybe it could be done, but it’d be a complete pain in the a$$ to do with the engine in the car. Regardless, good luck with it all! Let me know how it goes!

Fantastic video…. Just wondering if you checked your camshaft timing deviation on Durametric or the likes to see how bad they were?
@FunAhead_TV_Official2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I appreciate it. Yes, I did check the deviation beforehand. Both were at about 4deg of deviation. So both were within spec of

Great video showing all the guides! Question, in your case what were your cam deviation values before and after? I've replaced the large guides, but not the variocam guides, and wondering if that may be what is giving me debris, as well as -5.25(warm) on bank 1.
@FunAhead_TV_Official Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. My deviation before was around 3deg on each bank, but I honestly don’t remember the exact numbers. I actually didn’t measure cam deviation numbers afterwards.

Great video! What were your cam deviation values before and after changing?
@FunAhead_TV_Official2 жыл бұрын
I actually haven’t checked what they are since doing this. They were each ~2deg before. In my opinion, the deviation values aren’t the best indication of chain guide health. Mine were well within range, yet some of the guides were completely past end of life.

The M96 theme song was written by The Tragically Hip (Boots or Hearts): See, when it starts to fall apart Man, it really falls apart Like boots or hearts, oh, when they start They really fall apart

Very good. T-Y. Now, I may have missed it, but how many miles were on this engine?

At the time of that service, there were just over 102k miles on the engine.

I see. Keep in mind, it really only needs to be done if you’re consistently seeing bits of timing chain guide inside the oil filter when you do an oil change. They’ll be little, dark brown bits of rubber. If you’re not seeing that then you’ve got awhile until it needs done!

Are you going to show putting cams back together and cam covers back on please, you have inspired me thank you

Do you have the contact information for where you got the tool from eBay? I tried searching and could not find it.

I just tried to check EBAY and I came up short too... I also can't seem to find the kit that I bought. Interesting. If you end up sourcing another kit that you'd recommend, please drop the info to that on this vid if you wouldn't mind! I'm sure there are others having the same issue. Thanks!!

Soon I'll be doing my cam pads. I'd read on the forums that you have to split the engine to do the long chain guide/tensioner pads, but clearly you didn't and it even looks easy to do. Was bank 2 just as easy?
@FunAhead_TV_Official2 жыл бұрын
So, to clarify, you need to split the case for the tensioners on the chain between the crank and the intermediate shaft. But the guides for the chains between the intermediate shaft and the cams are all accessible by just taking the valve covers off and cams out. Also, yes, Bank 2 is the same process.
@DSC8002 жыл бұрын
@@FunAhead_TV_Official Ahh, that makes sense. At 59k miles, my bank 1 deviation is ~7 while my bank 2 is ~1, so I just want to address the bank 1 with the engine in the car. I doubt I'll drop the trans to get access to the inner guide bolt though so likely just the long tensioner pad. Thanks!
@FunAhead_TV_Official2 жыл бұрын
@@DSC800 Gotchya! Although, I definitely recommend just dropping the engine and trans… believe me, you’ll be happy you did. I’m not sure it’s even possible to do the entire job then re-time the engine with it still in the car. MAYBE it’s possible, but it’d be a total nightmare.
@DSC8002 жыл бұрын
@@FunAhead_TV_Official Reading on Rennlist, several have done bank 1 side while in the car with good write-ups, bank 2 is not so easy but has been done and, yes, described as a nightmare. I've only got a quickjack so dropping the trans is easy, but i wouldn't look forward to dropping the engine.
@boffam002 жыл бұрын
Scary stuff! (my engine is at 110,000 miles and hasn’t been touched). I can’t remember if you measured your cam deviations before doing all this?
@FunAhead_TV_Official2 жыл бұрын
I did measure cam deviation, but I didn’t talk about it in any of my videos. Both banks were at about 4 degrees. So, not terrible and within spec, but the main indicator for me was the pieces of chain guide material I was consistently finding… i knew that was something I could only let go for so long.
@JustinBekkerCanada2 жыл бұрын
That's kind of scary that you were only at 4 degrees, I'm at 6 and 2 and planning on doing the overhaul. I haven't noticed anything in my oil though
@FunAhead_TV_Official2 жыл бұрын
@@JustinBekkerCanada I did find it it interesting that I didn’t have more cam deviation with he one vario-cam pad being so bad. When you say you’ve never found anything in your oil, does that include your oil filter? Like do you cut it open to see what it trapped?
@JustinBekkerCanada2 жыл бұрын
@@FunAhead_TV_Official I haven't cut open my filter, but I've flicked through the pleats. I thinki still have my last one lying around, so I'll see if I can examine it more closely
