Just a tip: always loosen/remove the fill plug first. Do this before removing the drain. I once had a scare where I drained the oil, but had a REAL hard time getting the fill plug off. I was panicking a bit, wondering what to do with a completely empty transmission.

ALWAYS remove the fill bolt first before removing the drain bolt on the transmission, it’s good practice, if you drain the tank first and then can’t remove the fill plug ,, you will be up the creek without a paddle ha … ………………………….PS. Your right front Jack Stand didn’t look safe to go under the car ,,, maybe shove a spear wheel underneath the car to act as a safety net just in case emergency … otherwise good video …

Actually NOT TRUE. You make sure the fill plug is removable by cracking it loose. Only 1/4 turn. Then you remove drain plug. Otherwise fluid comes out rushing all over ur hands. . Then u remove fill plug and watch the fluid go to town.

@@KevinsEuropeanGarage Kevin, one thing to keep in mind is the coolant expansion tank. I recently had to change mine out. Was a PITA. It's a known issue with Porsche's that these get brittle and leak as they get older. I was fortunate that I was close to home when I saw it leaking.

Did this guy really drain it BEFORE making sure he could get the fill plug loose? Great way to have a very bad day.

Interesting how the 986 transmission mounts are hydraulic these are not. Love those bushings you out in. Great design.

I have a 2000 996. I have a very hard time getting into 2nd gear especially when cold. Once it's warm, it's a lot better. But I have a short shift kit, too. I've adjusted the cables but still, if I don't deliberately put it into 2nd, it will grind. Maybe once per each time I drive. I was debating doing the Gbox detent "solution" but now I am thinking about doing either new tranny fluid (although I did that last year - brand unk. - did not help) or maybe doing motor mounts.....I just don't know.

there's another video where someone reported many issues with the Motul Gear 300. He switched back to the OEM oil to fix the stiffness/grinding issues - have others experienced the same?
@carlodomingo5504
@carlodomingo5504 Жыл бұрын
Same here. It sucked shifting when cold with the motul. Went back to Porsche oem oil a month ago and that made it noticeably smoother. Will replace the mounts with same yellow ones this weekend to hopefully improve shifting more.

Really nice video. I have two questions. Why did you feel the need to add the transmission mount bushings? Was it preventative? Do you know if the 997.1 manual transmission is identical in procedure to your 996? I have a loud clunk sound at times when accelerating. Thanks again!
@KevinsEuropeanGarage
@KevinsEuropeanGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I felt some rocking motion in the drivetrain not any banging. I could see my mount had a little sag in it but wasn’t torn. I also wanted to make the car feel tighter and possibly improve shifting because the transmission is moving less. Unfortunately the 997 used a twin mount design.

Video was to the point also I have a 08 997.1 4 s manual with 40 k would this Motul gear 300 75/90 to be the fluid I need? They also have a gear 300 LS for limited slip another Utube blogger is using 300 LS in his 997?thought most were not Limited slip?need advice Thank you 🙏🏻
@KevinsEuropeanGarage
@KevinsEuropeanGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Limited slip is an option. If you have a LSD you can use the LSD version. It looks like they just add some additives for the LSD. I used the regular 75-90 in mine and I have the LSD option. As most 75-90's what porsche calls for don't have additives exclusively for the LSD you'll probably be just fine with either.

Hi Kevin great videos I’ve done a lot of projects to my gen 2 996 cab, based on them. Great stuff. Can you help, every time I hit a bump with the roof down and windows up the windows rattle like hell, I’ve stripped the doors and everything is tight, t’he windows operate perfectly. Any ideas or is this just a 996 issue?
@KevinsEuropeanGarage
@KevinsEuropeanGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. It sounds like there is some play in the window channels. If all the glass is secure with the window regulator and there is no play there. That’s what I would look at if you already haven’t. After that I would need to see the car .

Key Kevin, now that you have been using the fluid for a little bit, would you still recommend the Motul and the Powerflex bushing?
@KevinsEuropeanGarage
@KevinsEuropeanGarage 3 жыл бұрын
I can still definitely recommend the gear 300 it’s has really helped with cold weather shifting and just general shifting. I still need to let it warm up a bit but it’s real improvement. The powerflex bushing has helped tightening up the slop in the drivetrain but there is a drawback there is some vibration. Not a lot but you will notice it mainly at idle and low rpms not so much when you get higher in the revs.

Just 18ft# because we don't want to strip the soft aluminum threads. Did you replace the crush washer, like on the engine oil?
@KevinsEuropeanGarage
@KevinsEuropeanGarage 3 жыл бұрын
It’s actually 22lbs. There is a discrepancy in the manual. There is a few locations in the book for the spec. Both say say 30Nm but one says 18ft lbs and the other states 22ft lbs. I did not replace the washer it is in good shape. But it certainly doesn’t hurt to change it every time. Thanks for watching
@erolfox
@erolfox 3 жыл бұрын
@@KevinsEuropeanGarage ah 30Nm. Thanks! I'd always replace washer (esp. tell viewers) as they're same as oil & cheap, buy a bunch, meant to crush under the low torque only once. Great videos!!!

At first I felt some vibration for sure. It doesn’t seem as bad now. Maybe I just got used to it. I would only do the street version if your worried about vibration. My shifting got much better after changing to motul gear 300. Much smoother even in the cold.
