People buy Porsches for various reasons. Some people buy Porsches for prestige, some buy Porsches for their speed, some buy Porsches for their looks, but if you’re looking for a true, seat of your pants, sports car driving experience, I believe the 997.2 is the ultimate Porsche. There’s no question that Porsche improves their cars with each model year, but with the 991 Porsche changed the 911 forever, and for the pure race car driving experience, not for the better. I say that for two obvious reasons: first, the 991 abandoned hydraulic steering for electric steering resulting in an insulated road feel through the steering wheel. Likewise, the 991 is longer, wider and heavier than the 997, again adding additional separation between the driver and the road. Additionally, the 997 is the last “pure” Porsche, as the 991 was developed under the umbrella of Volkswagon. So, if a true race car driving experience is your main reason for buying a Porsche, I am firmly in the camp that believes the 997 generation is the way to go. I have owned two 997’s. I had a 2007 997.1 Carrera 4 which I absolutely loved. I tracked that car and had a ball watching Corvettes in my run group spin out as they tried to keep up with me through the turns. I recently purchased a 2009 997.2 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and I love the newer engine and the upgraded center dash. Driving these cars is an absolute driving pleasure, sure to bring a wide smile to your face. I honestly don’t think you could go wrong with either 997 version (IMS bearing concerns aside). As far as the future value is concerned, for those of us who prefer a naturally aspirated engine, these cars should definitely appreciate as the 991.2 started Porsche’s journey on the turbo-only road. So that’s my humble 2 cents on the subject. I hope this is helpful to some potential buyers.

Owning my 987.2S and having tested the 997.2S - I agree. This is a very weird generation of cars - combining what's best from both worlds - hydraulic steering and chassis size of the old Porsches and modern, worry free engines of the new Porsches. Double wishbone on the back of the 997.2 feels pretty special, the car "squats" incredibly under acceleration, whereas simple MacPherson rear strut in the 987 is less sophisticated, but the car pivots in the corners around your hips and gives you a more reassuring composure than the 911. Both have their limitations in every category, but as a tool and a leisure car in one - they are so, so good.

Nice review man. Although, having lived with both the 997.2 and 991.1 (both C2S), I can't fully agree. Yes they're both brilliant, but my God, the 991.1 C2S is spectacular in both pull (400HP) and noise above 5500RPM. Its modern, comfortable and a pussy cat around town but a complete animal when you ask it to be one. The only thing that lets it down is the electric steering, and to be honest, in 13000 miles of road and track driving, I've not once thought "if only it had better steering". The nose goes exactly where i want it to be. Every time. For me, its the 991.1 all the way. But as you rightly said, the 911 means so many different things to so many people. Each to his own.

@Rynardts
@Rynardts 4 жыл бұрын
@@jpdp3339 Yes, the MA1 engine, although each model year will have a slight different revision. For instance: 997 S, MA1.01, 2009, 6ZYL/3,8L /283 KW 991 S, MA1.03, 2013, 6ZYL/3,8L /294 KW However, the refinement in the 991 is what I like most. Also, the chassis feels more stable in the 991 as it's a longer wheelbase. They're both great cars, and for the price point, as Jay says, you can't go wrong with the 997. however (to my dismay, as I'm losing money at quite a rate), the 991 is coming down in price as well now.

991.1 is a much more capable car, but for me it really traded the "raw" feel (from the HPAS, shorter wheelbase, and tighter cabin) in the 996 & 997 cars for refinement and comfort. You could say the same thing really with each generation (ie G->964, 964->993, 993->996) but for me the 997 is the sweet spot for feel vs refinement. Although the later PDKs got even faster and smoother, I'm still very satisfied with my PDK's performance. My biggest letdown with the 997.2 is the sound - I believe the 997.2 is the quietest 911 ever made, with both the M96/7 cars and the later MA1 cars having a much louder exhaust system.

Driving a 987.2 which is basically very similar but mid engine - so damn enjoyable and sticking to the road like nothing else does. I've never been a Porsche fanatic, but like most people I've always respected the 911, I've just found all the different models confusing, and the mainstream car media's obsession with track-derived 911s totally irrelevant to me; this seems like the ideal purchase. That's why I watch this channel, you see cars portrayed that are suitable for real life needs, I don't particularly want a 911 that is 3.whatever seconds to 60, and almost any car can comfortably outrun the motorway speed limits without even trying. My most enjoyable time spent driving was many moons ago chasing around the country roads of North Essex with my friend looking for obscure pubs, he in a Triumph Dolomite Sprint,, which he drove extremely quickly, and me trying to catch-up in an Audi 80; if you had the misfortune to be stopped by a policeman, an absolute rarity, you'd probably find him later drinking in the local pub. Country B-Roads are the last haven for those of us who just enjoy driving.

Great review James. Now, in the interest of total transparency, I own a 997.2 so this comment will be somewhat biased, but when I was looking to buy a new 911 I tested both the 991 and 997.2. And although I love the 991/981 platform, the thing that sold me on the 997.2 was the size and wheelbase. The 997.2 IMO was the last of the 'sportscar' sized 911's and I just loved the way it changed direction and wriggled around on the road with the hydraulic rack. If I was doing lots of roadtrips I would probably prefer a 991, but for that 6am backroad blast, it's the 997.2 for me!

The 997.2 cabriolet was the first 911 I’ve ever driven and the first time I realised what a peculiar but unique feeling it gives you especially powering out of corners. No other car does that or even has attempted to copy that either

Brilliant review and spot on about the 996 and 997 generations being a sweet spot I prefer them to the 991s and 992s which have got a bit too big and too electroinc they feel less raw and engaging to drive despite being technically better in every way, give me a 996 or a 997 over a 991 anyday (especially the 996 Gt3rs or the 997 GT3 4.0)

Hi…I have a 997.2 manual which I’ve lowered to euro specs and it is fantastic as a weekend car but not as a daily due to feeling every bump on the road once lowered. On a positive note…I didn’t know handling would be even more perfected once lowered, I honestly initially did it for aesthetic purposes but I love it more now than ever. On a different note you could relate to, I have a buddy with a 993 but unfortunately a tiptronic with no upgrades in exhaust , purely stock and quite honestly not thrilling at all except for looks and that nice ping when door shuts. I’m sure with a manual totally a different story. Honestly before I lowered mine and upgraded all 3 exhaust, it was only thrilling after 4k rpm when you feel and hear that flat 6. I would love to drive a 993 manual and experience that analog drive👍🏼. I loved the cornering and adequate speed before my upgrades but simply in love with my car even more in a lusty kinda of way…it’s like going to a pretty wife to a dangerous gorgeous stripper as a girlfriend 🤣. Enjoy your 911!😍

Agree completely with the sentiment of the review, I never really got porche's I could never figure out why they were so popular as they aren't super exotic looking in the way that Aston/Lambos/Mclarens/Ferraris are, Id even say a 40k M4 looks nicer to the average person than a 997 911. Then i drove a 987.2 Gen Cayman and it all made sense...

I love that it's a serious sports car but is (reasonably) discreet and practical - I can't think of another car with similar performance and driving pleasure that doesn't shout "look at me!"; nor one that has a usable back seat (at least for kids). I may love the way a Ferrari 360 or 430 looks, but I'd never be able to drive it anywhere.

@@stu4181 Haha, I would definitely enjoy driving something exotic if I was only going for a "drive", but to own? I need to be able to use the car. The only other cars that come close in "flying under the radar" and being somewhat practical are the Jaguar F-Type and the Audi R8. But both are showier, and neither have a back seat! :)

@@speedcanada1 maybe things are different in Canada, but I don’t think many exotic cars are an only car in the U.K., you can’t just park up something nice without a thought of what’s going to happen to it, (so many cars are damaged in car parks by people reversing catching them and just driving off) and people seem to love to key nice cars, I don’t know what % but it’s a vast majority of anything sporty would be a second car here for sure
@speedcanada1
@speedcanada1 3 жыл бұрын
@@stu4181 I’m not disagreeing with what you’re saying and in Canada many if not most 911s would be a second or third car. My point is that to a great extent , 911s can fly under the radar and don’t attract as much negative attention. My personal preference is to be able to drive my cars frequently, and I want to be able to daily drive/commute to work in my sports cars in the summer (even though I have other cars sitting at home). It’s a great way to relax at the end of a long work day. I couldn’t use a Ferrari or Lamborghini that way, and I definitely couldn’t park one of those anywhere! That’s the advantage of a sub-exotic car.

Hello Jay and well done for your videos and for your You Tube success. I also wanted to congratulate you on the 550. In the late 90s, a friend had 2 of them one after the other. We took them to Munich twice. On one of the trips, I did most of the driving there and back as I was trying to break 200mph - at least on the clock - as the car's claimed top speed was 'only' 199 mph. Suffice it to say that I only managed 195 mph but was at 170mph plus for hundreds of kms. It was a long time ago but I recall everything and can tell you all about my experiences if these are of interest/use to you. I have driven many exotic cars. The 550 Maranello is the most epic and wonderful of all of them. The ability of the V12 motor is like an out of body experience at full chat as it the availability of power across the rage! You chose well!

"Stuttgartian truffle pig": that cracked me up, but it's a very good description and reason why for many the 997 IS the best compromise for feel, dynamics, speed and styling. of course everyone would love a 964 3.6T but there aren't enough around and when you can have so much fun with a regular 997.2 then it's criminal to deny oneself one. all you need in life is a 997 and some form of decent motorbike (you can't lean into corners on cars, so bikes will always win hands down for involvement).

I've just sold my 997.2 GTS. Had a PDK and, to be honest, I found it a bit boring except on those rare occasions when I could really flog it hard. Perhaps I'd have felt differently about a manual. The 997 also has a slightly cheap and nasty cabin and a terrible infotainment system (even for the era). Lots to like though: bulletproof build, perfect handling, fast as hell.

I have done the Sharkwerks X pipe, IPE valvetronic exhaust, SOUL Street catted headers, Cobb accessport tuning/dyno (BBi Motorsport), Fabspeed Cold Air Intake, IPD Plenum, Sport Porsche / BBS Wheels, Decent tires, Some brake work, Springs, Gt3 Bumper/Lip, Gonna order gt2 skirts to match, Either gt2 rear bumper or gt3 look dual exhaust rear bumper. Gonna have Vision Motorsports build motor to 4.2L eventually will be about 500+ BHP easy after that. Probably grab a set of carbon ceramic rotors/calipers eventually too. Call it good. Awesome car. Interior is basic but all quality. Rides nice. The oil issues have been fixed from 997.1-997.2 I think. Has been solid for me. Yeah, it's not a mitz motor but, after it's built, it's built.

I've also driven all the other key drivers M cars, and various other competitors too. And the joy in just driving this is immense. I find any excuse to go for a run the Porsche! I just love the balance and the way you can use the weight and power at the rear end through the twisties. Its the most satisfying car I've owned period. Yes my absolute Favorite Porsche is the 997 generation. It is such a beautiful car!its not too big like the 992 has become and it’s not too small like the 964 and 993 was. It is perfect size and perfect amount of power. My dream car is a red Porsche 911, 997.2 Carrera 2S. Rather a 2012 or 2013 the last year of the car. And if not that then a 997.2 turbo OR a Carrera 4S.

The Recipe seams a million years old and maybe boring to some for that reason, but if you're sitting there with your well crafted Carbonara you just enjoy life and smile.

Love 911 week!❤️ Keep ‘em coming👍🏻 Had a 997.1 C2S in manual. Brilliant car, although lacking PSE. Sold it out of fear of bore score which the M97 3.8 is most in danger of developing out of the whole range of 98-08 MY’s. Unfortunately the 997.2 isn’t flawless either. The steering wheel you mention being super boring to look at, and the sound of the engine is just bland. The 991.1 has a glorious engine note, but steering isn’t the highlight of the 911 range. That’s why I settled on the 991.2 Carrera T, which in manual guise is just an utterly brilliant 911 iteration with modern PCM, digital radio (no FM in Norway), mechanical diff locker, super precise steering with the optional rear wheel steer making it agile and nimble in compliance with its 20mm lowered S-PASM and wider 245/305 tires. Those who claim boosting the engine ruined the 911 haven’t tried a manual Carrera T. It’s raucous! And being considered a GT car, Porsche fitted the sport chrono with the track connect as standard which makes it awesome when you hook up your phone to the car on track days🥇

I agree 100%..The manual shift in the Carrera T is noticeably better, certainly compared with that in a regular 991.2. I had a T as a loaner for three weeks last year and it was just that bit more engaging to drive than a regular 991.2. I have a 991.2 C2S with PDK, initially specced the manual , but after the Porsche experience day at Silverstone I wasn't impressed with the quality of the manual shift, hence I went for PDK. The sound of the older 997 and 991.1 are unquestionably better and also because you hear them more of the time, due to the relative lack in torque compared with the new turbo charged 991.2 etc.. but.. my C2S 991.2 with standard exhaust.. I have to say, makes a purer more sonorous (though quieter) sound than when fitted with PSE (personal opinion). Nick Murray's exhaust note comparison test is by far the best test on KZbin. I get why people have favourites, and each model has its own merits over another model. The new 992 for example makes my 991.2 feel positively analogue by comparison. Personally I think the 991.2 has the most resolved styling of any modern 911 this side of a 964. If I was to look for another older 911, it would be a 964.. 997 to me looks too bland. Nobody is wrong of course, it all comes down to personal preference. Apparently the manual shift quality in the 992 is another step up... aahh.. there is another reason to visit the showroom!

Great review of what I agree is the best of the modern 911s. Re your comment on the Gen 1 PDK, I agree the shifts can be somewhat lazy. However, when equipped with Sport Chrono, engaging the Sport (or, god forbid, Sport Plus) mode completely changes shift speed and characteristics. The down side? One can't engage transmission Sport mode without also switching PASM to Sport. So while Sport mode shift speed is equivalent to the new PDK, IMO, the suspension is somewhat stiffer. Stuttgartian truffle pigs - LOVE IT! 😂

IF you can front the ~US$40K to buy one, and have a reserve available for any catastrophic failure, it can be one of the cheapest cars to own. It's bottomed out on the depreciation curve, and most maintenance costs are fairly reasonable if you can handle basic things yourself. The most expensive part of 997.2 ownership so far for me is tires; it was the same experience with my 986 Boxster (other than it still depreciating hard after I bought it). You can likely sell it at any point and get your initial purchase price back, which then goes to offset some of the maintenance cost. CAVEAT - any major failure can be very expensive to fix, both parts and specialized labor with access to Porsche-specific tools (like PIWIS).

Went onto a 997.2 turbo which was epic but now in a 991. 4S Cab which suites me well as I get older and softer but still wanting a N/A engine. Newer 3.0 turbo engines may be efficient but don’t have Porsche 911 character anymore #sadface.
