When you think of Porsche you probably think of fast cars, and finance bros.
Porsche's are expensive but decidedly less flashy than their Italian rivals so they do well with the people that want an expensive sports car but don’t want to explain what they do for a living every time they stop t a gas station.
What you might not know is that Porsche and the finance bro’s that enjoy the fast cars they make have more than a producer customer relationship.
Porsche is itself, effectively an investment firm that happens to occasionally make cars on the side.
If you weren’t confused already, Porsche Automobiles is owned by the Volkswagen group, the company that makes the golf and the beetle, but the Volkswagen group, is owned, by Porsche.
You can also buy shares in Porsche, as well as Volkswagen because they are both public companies listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange, however, Volkswagen has announced plans to take Porsche public at the end of the year, even though it already is a public company.
This corporate mess is only where the weirdness begins, because besides making cars Porsche has investments in companies that make commercial 3D printers, laser systems, and satellite launch platforms.

Had a case study on Porsche hedging currency risk for a finance class. From the case we worked on: Porsche in 2007 made ~€1bn profit from selling cars while making €4bn from foreign exchange trades and options on Volkswagen.
@firstjohn26
@firstjohn26 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I thought that was going to be the subject of the video. During 2007 and 2008 (?), Porsche amassed not only substantial VW stock but also a huge call option portfolio on VW, while many foreign hedge funds were aggressively shorting a slumping VW stock. And then one magical Friday afternoon, Porsche gave a press release - in German - announcing that they either owned or controlled more shares of VW than exist in private hands. The resulting short squeeze briefly gave VW the highest market cap of any company in the world and made Porsche many times it's standard annual profit from manufacturing vehicles. :) Think GameStop but bigger

To put it simply: "Die Porsche Automobil Holding SE" is the Holding Company from the Porsche Family. Porsche AG is the Car Company and is owned by Volkswagen. But "Die Porsche Automobil Holding SE" owns 53.3 of Ordinary Shares in Volkswagen. Which is around 31,9% of Volkswagen. So Porsche is mostly producing Cars. But a Company with the same Name and Origin could be confused for it.

@legqio Жыл бұрын
You got it slightly wrong. "Aktiengesellschaft" means "company limited by shares" (Aktien means shares, Gesellschaft means society). So any company which ownership is defined by shares is an AG irrespective of whether or not it's publicly traded. It's similar to how an American company can be a Corporation and not be publicly traded (think of Koch Industries Inc for example).

Of course it doesn't mean "auto group." It's f'n German. This guy seems like he does research for his videos, but so much simple nonsense slips. Like Porsche is not a one syllable word. Fun fact, just like Porsche AG and Porsche SE (Porsche Automobil Holding) are two different companies, "Studio F. A. Porsche", the 'Porsche' that designs yachts, buildings and other products and the one you a reffering to, is yet another, entirely different company - or at least it used to be: It was founded in 1972 as "Porsche Design Studio" by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, designer of the 911, as an independent product design studio that, just like any other design studio, offered (and still does!) their services to basically everyone that wanted to hire them. They remained more or less independent (at least in an ownership/business sense) from the rest of Porsche until 2003, when Porsche AG (so the car company, not the holding company) bought the majority of Porsche Design Studio and later renamed it "Studio F. A. Porsche" (2015). You see, the video only scratches a tiny bit of the entire cluster... that is Porsche/Piech (and a lot of other big family owned conglomerates in Germany).

Great video! I studied this case in an investment banking course in my Master´s. The Porsche Family later did a spin-off of Porsche (separated Porsche from VW to make it an independent public company) but since the Porsche-Piech family would not lose control of its original brand they make VW issue special dividends to the shareholders with voting rights (i.e. Qatar and themself, but mostly themself) and used that cash (plus debt) to buy 25% plus one share of the new IPO voting shares. The remaining 75% of voting shares are still controlled by VW, which is effectively controlled by the family. They also issued non-voting shares to the public. So basically, they did an IPO from a company that technically was already public, recollected a bunch of money from investors, and did not lose any control of the company. All of this while not putting any of their own cash into the transaction.

The sad fact is that Porsche is one of many companies that operate like this. Companies like Apple, Adobe, and Starbucks have all realized that “financial innovation” is MUCH easier that real business innovation. It’s the same reason Apple hasn’t come out with a decent product in years but still manages to grow its revenues every year
