Walking Stanley is easy West to East or the other way. North to South is all down hill and it's steep enough to make your shins ache at the bottom. Going up hill is just as hard because of the gradient.

Interesting..trees seem to have no trouble growing in Stanley-has anyone attempted planting forest in the islands?
@KiwiCatherineJemma6 жыл бұрын
Yes my thoughts exactly...thoughts from many years ago actually. Currently the Falklands has plenty of money coming in from ocean fishing licence fees and ocean oil drilling revenues. Well as we know the world's fish are 95% gone and we're winding down, slowly, on our oil based world economy. Seems to me that apart from a handful of sheep farmers seeking out a meagre living, the Falklands government should be encouraging the planting of massive forests. Not just for the "carbon credits" sorta reasons. Yes there are many many varieties of hardy trees that would grow in that climate. Obvious candidates are types of trees already sen growing around Stanley town, including the Chilean auracaria pine (which also gives edible nuts). Varieties of trees from colder climates that are near to coastal exposure would seem sensible, and there are many from Alaska and Norway and Scotland etc. New Zealand has native trees that can tolerate from Summer drought to Winter cold and storms, that grow right to the Southernmost parts of the NZ mainland, and also on NZ's sub-Antarctic Islands which lie halfway in between NZ and Antarctica, a climate every bit as bad as Falklands in Winter. Come-on you Falklands sheep farmers, get into agroforestry and plant some forests, including tree or all sorta varieties, evergreens and deciduous, edible fruits and pine-nuts, and commercial forestry varieties for cheap timber and framing, and for fine furniture and high value timbers, trees for farm hedges, windbreaks and shelter belts. Especially in the cooler areas of the South Of the South Island of NZ, farmers well know the value of trees as hedges and shelter belts, which help protect sheep against late Winter storms especially as ewes give birth in early Spring. For horticulturalists in Summer, hedges give shelter from drying winds that would otherwise rob vegetable and fruit crops of valuable moisture. If someone gets me a visa (I already have UK passport) and can sort me out with a place to live, and a liveable wage, then I'd GLADLY move to the Falklands to help work on making the place a treed environment, from shoreline to shoreline...just like the Shetland Islands used to be, before they cleared the forests and filled the land with sheep (preventing any natural regeneration). The world is critically short of perennial plant biomass (basically trees and woody shrubs) lets help to fix that. Let's turn the Falklands into treed forests (there would still be plenty of grassy plains for the sheep farmers). cheers all

@Johnny Golightly Margaret Thatcher showed that England, in addition to manufacturing dictatorships in the world, like those of Galtieri, Pinochet ... of course, together with other countries, the UK alone could not, alone they would have lost the war, a criminal war, like all other countries. wars, where only soldiers, British and Argentines died while those who commanded, slept warm in their beds, when there are crimes no one wins, not even the truth, we will continue as long as there are borders, claiming in peace the MALVINE ISLANDS as ARGENTINES, a respectful hug
@universidadpopularpatagone93953 жыл бұрын
@Johnny Golightly 690 / 5000 Resultados de traducción . The war began with an invasion and occupation by English pirates, who throughout their history terrorized innocent people by assassins, thugs and gangsters. The English, their bosses, not their people and their soldiers who also feel innocent in some way. England used terrorism, they made us military dictatorships, in Latin America, Asia, Africa ... while they said they were fighting them, did the British end it? Better luck next time? I hope there are no more wars and the English, who even in Europe do not love them very much the rest of the countries, learn their governments not to steal more! in the Falkland Islands they are very far from home !!!
