Porta Potti Curve 550e Pump Installation

After attempting find a video showing exactly how to install the Pump with no success, I decided to create one. I must apologize for the video quality we are still novice at this.
I purchased the Pump Assembly on-line from Home Depot for about $100.00. It shipped directly to the store near me and it was super easy to go by and punch in the code provided to me and get the part. The biggest problem was the new part did not come with instructions for installation. So after trying to figure it out without breaking it, I decided to call Thetford customer service and ask them. The young lady there was extremely nice and helpful and offered to email me the instructions which she did. I only have great things to say about my experience with Thetford.

I purchased the Porta Potti 565e (which is virtually the same as the now discontinued 550), and wanted to swap out the electric for a manual pump and was worried I'd bugger it up without some clear instruction, and you've provided just that! I tend to research stuff to death (much to my wife's dismay) before I ever pull the trigger to buy something and our portable toilet was certainly no exception. Reviews for it have been stellar across the board with many referring to this toilet as "the Cadillac" or "gold standard" of portable toilets. As for exceptions, the biggest gripes I've found from reviewers by far is due to problems with the electric pump. Oddly enough, this model with the electric pump is made only for the US market (Porta Potti 565e), while the European version (565p) is identical, but swaps the electric pump for a manual one. But what if your batteries die or (worse) the electric pump floods or burns out (as many report), then what do you do? Then you'd really be up crap creek! Unfortunately, Thetford does not offer the manual pump in the US market. We wanted one just to have on hand for *when* the inevitable happens, so we ordered the manual pump from Europe. Do a simple Google search on "Thetford piston pump". You're looking for part number 92401. Often you'll find the part number with a three-digit suffix which indicates the trim color of the part. If you care, "111"=white and will match the Porta Potti perfectly. Sometimes the manual pump is available on @t for shipping to the US, but we ended up getting ours from a retailer in Germany (thank you, Google Translate) whom we paid with PayPal and they shipped it via DHL. We had it in about a week, and now thanks to this video, I know how to install it.

This was very helpful. I didn't need to replace my pump. I only needed to remove it and then free up the impeller that had become stuck from inactivity. This showed me exactly how to do it without damaging anything.

Thank you for the great tip on how to take the part out. I was about to buy a new one but when I disassembled the pump assembly part at the bottom you could see the little motor and with the screwdriver gently I moved the plastic flyers back and forth. Seems to me the lubricant that was used become thicker over time and when not in use made it harder for the little pump to pump water. I put the battery back in place and submerge the lower part of water. At first, the pump moved little pushing water thru but few more did the trick and now it's working. Before you throw away the part try what I did and maybe you don't need a new one.

Thanks. I was mostly wanting to see how the pump unscrewed. Good job, I got it. I am so glad you made this video. It helped me. I got lucky with mine that had not been ran for months with no water in the tank and would not run. I did this..., Soak the bottom in hot soapy water for 5 minutes. Then, turn the rotor on the bottom with a screwdriver a few turns each way. Pop on the battery pack and tada....mine worked again. Hope you get yours fixed so easy.

Hey, Terry, it's Thetford part number 92401111, SPP PPE Piston Pump. Got it through Amazon UK (England). Haven't yet installed it, but it certainly looks right, and my research showed it was correct. Good luck!

John Alvarado not certain. There's a taller one that won't work, and a shorter one that will. Search the part number I posted. That's the correct one.

Thanks for great video...I just bought a brand new unit that has a bad pump out of the box...89 bucks for return shipping...I will keep it and buy a new pump...wondering if it can be converted to manual pump by installing the 565P pump instead?
