I'm enjoying this speedrun, but I really wish we could stop calling game mechanics "badly designed" or "coded badly". Developers made a choice to ship a game that works for the vast majority of players. If it's actually a very bad game, fine. But Portal isn't that.

Definitely this. I think the word they're looking for there is "exploitable". Whether those exploits came from overlooked edge cases (pixel perfect lines of sight - 10:03, flying - 52:28), taking advantage of mechanics that improve playability for the average player (unbeatable puzzle failsafes - 8:24, re-portaling - 16:37), or areas of the game that weren't prioritized as highly (all of co-op mode), the bar of quality Valve set for this game is still super impressive even 8 years later.

40:06 I think the reason GLaDOS didn't die in her potato form is because it was one of Aperture's experiments. My theory is that Aperture labs have been trying to invent so many innovative inventions. One of them is a potato that can with stand falling hundreds of feet. It was this potato Wheatley unknowingly put GLaDOS. Of course, this could also be a simple case of plot armor protecting Potato GLaDOS.

At 60 FPS, it's frame-perfect. You get a single frame window to hit the wall, because you're going at terminal velocity when you enter the portal, so the flip is just one frame. At higher frame rates you get more frames to execute, but it's the same time period, because the physics are reliant on the tick rate.

My best "mind blown" moment comes from the end of this game. They explain at one point that the white gel is made from moon rocks, but you don't really think much about it, since it just seems like a random fact the game is throwing at you. After hours of additional gameplay, you get to the final boss and you get stuck... you don't know what to do... then it hits you. There's a hole in the ceiling and you can see the moon! It absolutely blew my mind when I realized I had to shoot the moon XD

its really good for a casual game. because it also slows you down. doesnt matter how fast or slow you go if you are in a reasonable threshhold you will get the perfect amount of speed to make a perfect jump.

Yeah I never really liked glitched runs of Portal (1/2). It's not really one of those runs that are nice to watch even though they are quite technical and require precise movement. Normally I enjoy watching a speedrun of a game I just casually completed but Portal wasn't one of them. At least not the glitched runs.

Portal 2 has custom levels made by community, some of them are heavily modded. At the moment there is ~850000 custom levels and about a 1000 are created every day. Valve just knows there is no need in sequel.
