Sorry about the sciatica. Pain is never your friend. I like ported barrels and ported extended choke tubes. I've found a simple ported choke on a pump gun takes the sting out of heavy hunting loads. On an O/U I can shoot at least one more round before my shoulder complains. Great to have you back on the channel, always good info.

I have been at the range with a buddy shooting a ported vs non ported slug barrels. Both guns were identical Mossberg 500's one being ported the other not. There is a definite difference in muzzle flip. Much less with the Ported. And noise was about the same as far as we could tell. A advantage not mentioned is the fact that it is easier on a scope or Red Dot. They do not take as much a beating. Go with the Ported.

I personally found low velocity ammunition avoids any Barrel Climb and reduces recoil, the follow through is un interrupted on second shot if needed to shoot again.

Roger, Question for you if I may. What do you think about backbored barrels? Is there a difference in shot velocity between 18.4 and 18.8 bore diameters? Can 18.8 be used for waterfowl? Do backbore barrels make clean kills? Thank you.
@rogerpace93226 жыл бұрын
i do'nt know a lot about this topic but backbored barrels are supposed to reduce recoil...for hunting waterfowl i would use the tight chokes because you want a lot of pellets in the target area for a clean kill. Pattern the gun at the distance you are most likely to shoot the waterfowl and see what kind of pellet spread you get...Stay well!

Nice vid thx, but its really necessary to extra clean the holes in your barrel. And what is with portet chokes, will they help ?
@rogerpace93227 жыл бұрын
sorry sonnenschein...yes the holes do need to be cleaned...as for ported chokes...they are ported all around so they can't help with muzzle rise...some ported chokes slow down the plastic wad...I can't see that there would be a huge benefit in that...good to hear from you and stay well!
@rustyshackleford176 жыл бұрын
They're another place for crud to build up. Honestly, they're so simple to clean, it shouldn't be a hassle (pipe cleaner and some solvent). Ported chokes don't have a whole lot of benefit it seems for shotguns...though they have a lot of benefit for rifles. Many companies will tell you not to use certain wads with ported chokes.

You've been missed Roger. Glad to hear you are on the mend though. I actually have not heard about ported barrels on shotguns before, I'll look in to it as I am not so great on my shotgun. (My son is now getting an average of 22/25) I have a muzzle break on my .308 which I like however, when my son uses it.... I don't like sitting on the bench next to him! The outward force knocked over my near empty can of drink! lol. I just wish I had more time to spend at the range so I can get some good practice in. I work full time and the closest range is about a 1.5 hour drive, so 3 hours of travelling and a decent amount of time at the range when I get a day off doesn't happen often. The range I attend has introduced 'silhouette' targets. So we can now do free standing target shooting (not just bench shooting or clays) which I do enjoy. Love your vids, get better soon and keep them coming. Tracy.

Hello Roger,thank you for answering,I am glad you believe in Chiropractors like me,I have had my challenges too.Happy New Year to you. PS I am using the method of the quartered microfiber cloths you demonstrated in one of your vids very effectively. I found a final pass through after the initial cleaning you demonstrated in that vid by a shot of Rubbing Alcohol on another microfiber cloth quarter to finally polish and remove minute residues of fouling and bore cleaner.

Thanks for another great video Roger. I have a Benelli Supersport Semi Auto with a single ported barrel and I think in this case it does aid to combat muzzle flip taking into account the semi auto inertia system Benelli use, that seems to induce some additional muzzle flip (when watching Benelli M1/M2 shooters etc. without the porting) 👍 Not sure about O/U's?

Hi Roger, I hope you are better real soon. I really need some help with my second shot, can you give me some advice on the best way to set up for the second shot?
@rogerpace93227 жыл бұрын
Phillip...the important thing about the second shot is to keep our face on the stock...once we fire the first shot the tendency is to lift our head and we arent even aware of it...the other thing that improves your second shot is to shoot at the chips...even if you hit the clay ...shoot at a piece that has broken... that will make you keep your face on the stock...put good cheek pressure on the stock and hold the gun firmly against your shoulder...hope this helps...let me know how you go!

My ported pistol has no muzzle flip. It shoots absolutely flat. I made three large ports on top so clean up is easy. I am going to port my shotgun next. Four large ports on the very top front. Just be sure to smooth out the bore and you shouldn't have any problems.
@rogerpace93225 жыл бұрын
Kim...sounds good but run it past a gunsmith before you do any work on it...happy shooting!!!

@@rogerpace9322 already have, but thanks for the advice. I ported it, putting a magazine extension on and have modified the loading port. I have severe back problems mitigating the recoil is a must for me. I am also porting my AR 15. The Smith just said don't use larger than 1/4 drill bit for the ports.
@flash.gordon7 жыл бұрын
Ported chokes reduce recoil as they direct the gases bakward thus giving a little foward impulse to the gun that conteracts the recoil force made by the cartridge explosion.
@rogerpace93227 жыл бұрын
180...very well explained...good on you!
@jzdank19816 жыл бұрын
Cartridge explosion does not create recoil force. Ever shot a blank? The lump of metal going from zero to 1000mph in an instant creates recoil force.
@rustyshackleford176 жыл бұрын
People use ports at the end of their rifles all the time so the physics of porting should still apply on a shotgun like it would on a rifle for the most part. Problem with ported chokes is that not as much time/effort have been put into developing them unlike rifles. Besides, everyone just creates 360° ports because nobody wants to put in the time to develop a way of timing them.

The power loss you get is typically minimal since the bulk of the energy was already spent shoving the round down the barrel.
@gpbuck890115 жыл бұрын
You might add that porting the barrel may void the factory warranty on the barrel. That would be on the disadvantage side. Check with your gun manufacturer.

Ported barrels are absolutely worthless on all fronts! i'd bet anyone that they could never tell the difference if all else could be held equal. And if you could not tell how much louder they are than non-ported barrels when standing next to them, you are deaf as a post! A marketing ploy. Nothing else.
