This video should be titled how to turn $15,000 of live edge slabs into $300 of firewood and saw dust.
@diogenes98092 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was painful to watch, they basically threw away a car, a lot of people dont realise how much hardwood like that is worth till they try to buy some. That stump alone would have retailed at over 2000 for each 3 inch slab. If they didnt want to rip cut it some 4 inch cookies off it would have still been worth 1000 a piece. At least where I live.

Silver maple is fast growing week and soft. Not desirable for slabing
@browner81252 жыл бұрын
@@alexflieshigh that is absolutely accurate and simultaneously absolutely not accurate. While it is softer than a lot of hardwoods it is harder than many. It makes absolutely beautiful slabs. They dry relatively quickly. Stay very flat and most of the time develop and stunning amber color with areas of curl. And since they like to shed branches and said branches will rot the lower logs will have different coloration or "rot staining". people make slabs from far weaker woods like cottonwood , red wood.

I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle kzbin.infoUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

@@Redbull661 I'd like to add,,,, I am whiz bang at sharpening my own chains,, (After 4 or 5 decades of hand sharpening something has to have finally settled in..) And when the video shifted to the 50 inch bar,,,,, ripping,, not crosscutting,, That was some very impressive ripping. Most chains hate to rip,,,,, That one was piling up the long grated carrot chips near as fast as he could kick them aside. That was one extremely well,, flawlessly sharpened chain. I've got 5 decades at this aand I don't think I have every seen a rip that perfect. Well done. A suggestion to improve speed and efficiency. When you rip something that large,, the moment your chain is spitting white sap wood grated carrots. Immediately stop and get the saw out of the cut. The risk of a dirt touch, and a dull chain is either a certainty or at best,, 50/50.. Use a wood wedge to finish breaking the piece. Wood wedges are something of a lost art but once you learn how to make and use a wooden wedge,,,, in its place,, ten times better than a steel or a plastic wedge. On that rip,,, I would have lifted the saw back to the top,, moved over so I was creating a 10 to 12 degree wedge,, 16 inches long and 4 to 8 inches, or more, wide at the top. Big wedge. Twice the angle of a plastic wedge (stack two atop each other,), and twice as wide and twice as long,, or more. It requires ten seconds to manufacture one,,, and a large wooden wedge would split that 90% ripped log with a large hammer,, in seconds,,,,, No risk of dirting your chain. Wooden wedges can be left behind. (Laughing ,, just like my plastic ones.) I can manufacture 100 of them in the time it would take to drive to the store. My chain will never dull if I strike one. If one gets stuck,, I don't care. And mostly wooden wedges have a moisture content,, they WANT to stay in the cut,, they never squirt out like plastic or steel,, and I can make any size or thickness. And I usually rip them right out of another cut or the stump. And a truly large wedge would split that 5' diameter maple in a flash. At one time,,, ALL split rail fences were manufactured, split, with wooden wedges.

@Redbull6615 жыл бұрын
that's a good question and I don't honestly know. One of the main trunks off was rotten. Usually when silver maples get this big they are rotten inside so they pose a danger to falling on multiple houses power lines etc. The rest of it being as solid as it was is a huge exception to the rule. But it was only a matter of time.

:I recently bought a Stihl MS 661 CM Magnum by accident (complicated story so I'll spare everyone the details) and I'm pretty pissed off because I wanted the MS 661 R instead! My reasoning is that I don't like the idea of having electronics in a chainsaw. My question is for those that have the CM, What is your experience with your saw and has the electronics caused you any problems. I'm thinking of getting rid of it or possibly giving it a chance. UPDATE 09082023: I have since my original post evolved in my chainsaw experience. I now have the Stihl 500i and the Husqvarna 592 XP both of which have electronic modules. Both are very powerful and start up nicely. I have even used them in single digit temperatures with no issues. So I stand corrected and edified.

I’ve had to of the m-tronic saws for a few years and just added a third. I’ve had zero problems, they have more power and use less fuel. The handle can easily be swapped out for a wrap handle if that’s what you want. I prefer like the wrap handles.

@@jaxxonbalboa3243 our 500 is one of our favorite saws. I looked into the 592 a lot but decided on the 661. The ‘Right to Repair’ is a big deal for us, and the Stihl dealers are about two hours closer. I can also do the port work if we decide to. What really made the decision was Husqvarna only selling their scan tool to dealerships. There’s rumors of that possibility changing in the future, if it does I’ll probably end up with a 592XP. I really like how much cleaner the Husqvarna air filters stay and how the peak HP is at higher rpm’s. In my opinion, in stock condition, the 592XP is hard to beat performance wise.
