I don’t think Zach understands fully. But basically Porter Robinson was in a really dark place after Worlds. He made Nurture not only to save himself but he also wanted to save others. To give them that same motivation and love for life - that got him out of his darkest place. However, because he made this larger than life record that really resonated with people (many fans consider his music life changing) - he felt this massive responsibility to always be that perfect light for people. To be that thing that makes people love living. But he started to resent that projection of himself because he’s not perfect. He struggles with anxiety, anger and sadness. He doesn’t have life figured out despite it seeming that way through his album. Through all this he also started to see the toxic side of fandom where people thought they knew him. Where listeners felt they had a relationship with him because of that shared bond through his music. Because his music really connected with them on that deeper level. Smile is kind of a response to all of that. It’s an album about projecting happiness on the surface while struggling with sadness underneath. It’s about rejecting the notion that he has to be this larger than life positive energy for others - because it’s not his responsibility to be the reason others get out of bed every day - even if that’s something he sometimes wishes he could be. The album isn’t just about the toxic side of fandom tho as Porter also wants to know the beauty we give him as well. That it doesn’t have to be a one sided relationship(in terms of exchange). As a fan who felt Worlds and Nurture were both life changing albums, I think it’s brutally honest of Porter to reveal the pressures that has also put on him. Even though I don’t know him and never will, i definitely just want him to keep making the music he wants to make. Not every album needs to be Nurture.

Kind of ironic for me, as I thought WORLDS was the life changing album. No one had made such a heroic tour-de-force of emotion, merging heavy edm with nu-core and anime esthetics. No project ever had that scope. Then Nurture came out and I was incredibly disappointed. It's almost voyueristically self-indulgent and lacked the fresh beats and synths that put him on the map. I understand the appeal of his current self, but I miss the courage and danger of Virtual Self/Spitfire. Everyone has insecurities and these problems, I don't find art about it interesting. I go to art to experience something different than the mundane, anxiety-riddled world and Porter made a new universe with his old music.

@@masonrockwood7732 I understand your point. Somewhere around 18 minutes onwards here, Porter talks about how who he is and also who his audience are have changed so much from a past album that trying to replicate that success, while briefly satisfying, won't bring the same feelings again. But he also said that his new eras usually come from fighting against something from the previous. Hopefully he'll be less bothered mentally and try to find that youthful energy you mentioned once more. Personally I've only recently heard of Porter and have only listened back in time to Nurture and Virtual Self. The latter truly slaps

So I have OCD and I think Porter’s greatest gift is being able to convey what’s in his head to others. Whether that’s through his words when he talks or his music. Those of us who have OCD usually have these grand things in our head and we can be hyper-dedicated to things but expressing it to others can often be difficult. He is a master at communicating. Thank you for giving us a voice and an outlet!

Man there was something about this interview that was incredibly frustrating compared to the previous interview (which was great!) - Zach's questions aren't following Porter's line of thought and it really messes with the flow of the interview in that he's trying to circle back to his question. This is really kinda weird because usually Zach follows along and just goes with where the person he's interviewing is leading him. - "What pressure makes you want to be perfect" is straight up JV and I'm honestly kinda shocked that such a mid question was asked. Porter noticed it too, he repeated the question like "How tf am I supposed to answer a question like that." Zach is a really good interviewer and I think that even he wanted to eat those words after he said it. We all make mistakes, and I sure hope that one was realized. - Porter is straight up coming out saying "yeah, you see I can be vulnerable right now and it's only going to make things worse in the way that people think that they really know me when they don't". This is more of a phenomenon of people thinking that virtual representations of people are actually those people. Online friends aren't real friends. Celebrities and musicians and twitch streamers aren't really your friends. It's a hard truth that people have to reconcile with. You can see this a lot in his actions where he gave away clothing recently in LA but had a "no words will be spoken" rule. That's twofold! Number one, practically, no words could be spoken otherwise everyone in line would be there for ages. Number two, breaking that fan/persona barrier only leads to heartbreak for both! Again, hard truths. The frustration that I mentioned earlier with all of this is that Porter waxes and wanes on the tension between "the barrier" and "nostalgia". He's talking about nostalgia in other interviews and how nostalgia is intoxicating on a mental perspective and how anyone seeking to revisit something instantly realizes that it's never the same. He wants to provide nostalgia for his fans, but knows that in doing so he's going to ruin it. He talks about the barrier in the same way. If anyone were to break the fan/persona barrier you'd become instantly disillusioned at the reality of the person. That's frustrating! Obviously it's not Porter's fault, but just realizing all of this is so difficult to wrap your mind around and to come to terms with. So what do you do? You SMILE.

My single expectation with Porter is continuing exploration, and I absolutely love that that's something he said he admires and models after Daft Punk for himself. Re: gen ai. He's definitely coming at it from a stance of optimism and a bit of naive privilege. Yeah, it'd be great to exist in a utopia where AI allows us to never work and instead put ourselves fully into living and experiencing life to the fullest... but we live in a corporate hellscape. He totally misses the important context that AI systems are bankrolled by people with a distinct interest in disenfranchising the worker. If you don't think the endgame of AI is removing a workforce to increase profits and personal take home for the above the line money men then you gave been tricked. The utopia for AI CEOs is a tool trained on the back of people they pay too little wages to and (or people they don't pay at all) to remove them from the equation monetarily. I love Porter more than any artist on earth, he's been my favourite artist for the last 10 years, but he is a part of the problem. There are real actual humans that could have been hired to make fanart (or hell, just license fanart from tumblr) and used the money he paid them to make rent, buy groceries, go to the doctor, invest in their artistic skills to open them up to an actual full time artistic career. Using AI invalidates such a chance to bring your audience into the process (on an album that is a psuedo love letter to your audience) which would have elevated the message more. I love you porter, but your opinion on AI art definitely reeks of someone who has made it and maybe forgot the hellscape that is trying to hack it in a creative field. I'm sure some ipad kid will find some way to use AI in an interesting way, but not because AI allowed it, but because the kid figured out a neat use. End of the day, AI is a corporate tool that will eventually be used to replace the little guys like me, not someone like you who has a platform already. It's already taking jobs from people in commercial animation and video games, my industry, and I've full out just stopped sharing art online since I don't have any interest in training the beast that is designed to kill me. I love you man, I know you read these comments. Please dig deeper.

On the topic of always reinventing, I think the best thing for fans of previous albums who want an artist to go back to that style would be to seek out other works that influenced or were influenced by that "era" of that artist. There are so many works that I found because they were similar to Virtual Self, because there's so much music in the world that I've just never heard before. Man, imagine having a chance to listen to MCR for the first time at this point in one's life. What an opportunity.

Coming back to this, I was super interested to here the discussion about AI. As an artist I have mostly negative feelings towards it, but I also see a little glimpse of something in some AI art that I feel could be special. That’s all setting the ethics aside of course, because I don’t know if I’m even comfortable with using AI considering how it’s made.

Porter mentions that he feels like he’s running from himself a lot But I personally feel like, although we obviously don’t know him personally, it feels like with every album he’s running towards himself more and more. The level of vulnerability in SMILE! shows an authenticity that is really rare You can feel him getting to know himself when you listen to his songs. It’s like a symphony of his personal journey, and to be able to feel that through his music is a testament to how much of himself and puts into his art. It’s an honor to be able to witness even a fraction of how profound that journey is. God I love art

It rules how the musical heart of the album comes from Porter learning and embracing guitar music for the first time. His perspective on tackling indie pop from the perspective of an electronic producer reminds me of Grimes motivation behind writing/producing her 4th album, Art Angels. Funny enough that album too speaks on rejecting the image that critics/fans have built around your music (see California). Was dope to hear Porter got a chance to talk with Grimes and share his love for her intelligence and process. She definitely gets way too much hate as her unfiltered freedom of expression is perfect for being taken out of context and mocked. Awesome interview.

It was a shock for them to go from "people need to work" straight into admitting to using AI art in the music video. I don't think Porter's stance is malicious, and I think his idea that it allows artists to express themselves in formats they aren't skilled in is valid, but he is absolutely in a financial position where he could have easily commissioned fanart. My personal opinion is that AI is a neat tool, but in its current state it is incredibly unethical to use in commercial products. Even though the music video is free to watch, it's advertising a product that is not free and the art that AI was trained on was likely used without permission.

I respect Porter, and he clearly seems to have put thought into the subject, but I could NOT disagree more with him on AI art. I sorta understands what he means when he says using it as a barrier of entry learning tool for people who may struggle, and I agree AI art is perfectly fine for private and personal use, but he is SO off the mark about comparing AI art to Sampling/Autotune stuff. With those concepts, the human hand and mind has complete control over the recreation of the other person's work. AI, however is a MACHINE that is taking human work and spitting out a recreation created from lifeless formulas. While it IS taking basic keywords from a real human, at the end of the day, in order to create it's version of "art" it HAS to steal other human made art. Then it makes something that it THINKS and CLAIMS to be an original creation, but in reality is a soulless emulation without a real person's creative input or perspective. It looks at art not from the creative human soul, but as a mathematical formula that needs to be SOLVED. Put this on top of the fact that the majority of people using this technology this way at the moment are using it to PROFIT off of those stolen ideas, and claim that "they themselves" created it and NOT a computer formula. AI will NEVER be the same as something like remixing or taking inspiration from other's real human made work, because keywords put on a computer for it to try and "solve" like it's a problem, while technically input by humans, is still the computer's creation. It is NOT what art really is. Art is not a goal of formulaic perfection to achieve. It's not 2+2, it's pure creative energy from a REAL person.
@KellyJoule
@KellyJoule Ай бұрын
Ok, so this is a MASSIVE case of "I should have kept watching" because he actually does end up bringing up AI Art's lack of a Point of View. So at least he kind of recognizes that, but I think he's wrong on how we can somehow change that? It's just the nature of a computer calculation.

hey, just wanna chime in here that i completely agree with you! i was honestly shocked when he told the interviewers (unprompted) that he used ai art in the cheerleader music video. i maaaybe understand using ai art for personal reasons or making memes, but i would really expect someone with money/resources like him to commission actual artists to do that art rather than use ai. and i’m sure fans would have found it special to collaborate with him in that way. it sounds like he understands how ai generated music ends up coming across bleak and unauthentic, probably because he makes music, but i just wish he realized that ai art gives off that exact same feeling too
@KyleOfTheBeard
@KyleOfTheBeard Ай бұрын
Absolutely, 100% agree with your take. People like to argue about the usefulness and the artistic merit of the current phase of AI. I think it’s helpful to try and look down the line at what AI will turn into in ten years, twenty, thirty, etc. What I worry about is the slow (or rapid) shift of a humanity that gives into the immediacy of what AI generates. We’re already seeing this happen with AI evangelists who create what they consider to be art in their space, claiming that it’s either just as good, if not better, than art that’s made purely by human hands and minds. Exactly like you said, AI can’t discern what’s objectively or subjectively good or bad or mediocre. It simply follows a set of rules for compiling a series of tagged information based on a given prompt. That’s not how human art is made. Porter goes on to talk about creating one of his songs on ‘Worlds’, and he talks about the weather on the day he made the song-the change in barometric pressure made him feel completely differently than the day before, and it sparked something inside him that led him to the song. AI cannot feel anything. It might be able to look up the fact that the weather has changed, but it’s won’t output a different answer because of it. I just think it’s kinda wild that, even though he says he was playing devil’s advocate, Porter still said what he did about AI. It’s also disappointing to hear that even one small, possibly unnoticeable part of something about a music video I love was created using AI. I can’t help but wish he and his team had promoted fans instead of an AI, and prompted them to create posts for the art in the music video. It would’ve been a really cool way to incorporate his followers’ creativity into his own. It might have taken longer, true. But personally, I don’t think art should be so easily reduced down to whatever the quickest option is. As a tool, AI is undoubtedly useful and will be used a lot like that going forward. I see very little issue with that. But art is so inherently human that I can’t help but want to reject AI’s use to create something artistic-something that’s meaningful and borne entirely out of my own mind, that I know I might have arrived at independently, with hard work and determination and failing over and over and over until I was happy with it. Edit: I’m also of the opinion that not everyone is good at or meant to create art. Human minds function in so many vastly different ways that not everyone can function creatively the same way, or would want to. Creating art may spark an emotional or spiritual high for one person, but may feel tedious and boring and pointless to another person. I don’t think lowering the barrier for entry through AI for either person will make their individual journeys change. It’s the same problem I have with movies (I’m a filmmaker and documentarian). Cameras, for instance, used to be expensive and rare for someone to have on their own. The barrier to entry into the world of Hollywood and filmmaking was very high. But now, everyone has a fairly high quality camera in their pocket, making the main tool of a filmmaker ubiquitous and lowering the barrier to entry into that world. But as the barrier to entry gets lowered, the amount of people trying to enter rapidly increases to the point of growing beyond what any normal human can wade through. Content apes its own content through sheer volume of entries, and clogs or muddies the water, making it harder to find the people who are truly gifted at creating films or videos. More people are creating, but their content might be playing to an emptier or more impartial or bored audience. I dunno. Feel like I’m talking nonsense now haha. But Porter’s entire section on AI just really bugged me and got me thinking.

@KellyJoule I think you missed his point, he's saying we are evolving to a point to where all we will have is our creativity whatever you can think of you can have made. His point is that this doesn't necessarily meaning GG for art. It means that it will become extremely accessible for people to use it without those skills. For example I'm testing ai art for song covers of remixes that I make because I have dozens of songs I want to release but 0 experience in photoshop ect. So now I can get something professional enough to put up In a few minutes to get past this art skill floor

@KyleOfTheBeard I think you missed his point. It's pretty simply really. Essentially at the end of the creation process every human is making decisions on if the last move you made was closer or further from the final vision and you either keep it or do something else right. Ai will basically skip to the last part BUT it can't skip past that part. Porter making a song with AI will probably still resemble his sound especially once the software is sufficient. He essentially believes that the actual creative aspect of art and not the technical grind (I've been producing for 7 years so I personally respect the grind and I'm sure he does too)is what is significant. Another example would be when your writing something with chat gpt if you actually use the software you'll realize there is a pretty big skill curve like you could literally use chatgpt to teach yourself just about anything IF you know exactly what to prompt it with and likewise ai will be doing the leg work but humans will basically be the managers over seeing what work is done and where. I'm not a fan of Sono Ai I think it's somewhat rudimentary but once it or something similar becomes like a DAW with ai implementation that'll be when it gets serious

As someone that will still listen to & love his music I also don't agree with his take. sure Sampling was controversial, but ppl realized sampling isn't stealing a song, it's just using part of it, the sampler still needs to put in a lor of work. AI requires no talent at all.

Not me and Porter sharing similar dreams, I have this recurring dream of a giant mall (similarly to a mall in Vegas but bigger and more grand in high tech) SPECIFICALLY IN JAPAN. In this recurring dream, it's also pleasant for me. I'm on vacation in Japan and it's night time and the night life is so bright and full of lights, and we go to this HUGE skyscraper of a mall. Porter... are you there in those dreams too?
