What’s makes this interesting for me is the fact I grew up in Carroll county and still do.

This song is actually a true story. As a teen I remember them telling how this song came about

Hardcore country.....that's a whole little TV movie all wrapped up in 3mins. The singer is the child of Walter Browning. Mary Ellen testified/lied. They were both well respected. Nobody suspected an affair. The singer found the missing ring. Threw it in a well. Took an oath. That's a big secret to keep just for every other person involved to remain happy. But what? Fear,embarrassement, shame.... drover the singer to protect Mary Ellen reputation and family. Walter Browning family and reputation couldn't be smeared. The county paid for a marble monument to him........so driven by what , pride, guilt, shame, respect or maybe love of their mother. Didn't even talk about her..., this person never tells. ? @rockn2country Great reaction. You're getting better at seeing the twist coming....haha. thank you for the kind words. Love all the folks here know their music. So much good "meaty stuff ".

Claude King was a contemporary of Porter Wagoner. He had a smash hit in the early 60*s titled "Wolverton Mountain". When I was hauling wheat from Ok./Ks. to Houston, I would always seem to hear this played as I was driving the Stimmons Freeway through Dallas. This always brings back lots of good memories, for the good times. Not sure if you have played this one, but I think you will enjoy it. I would like your reaction to this one. Thanks!

Porter always reminded me of a big, goofy duck. I love the bit in this song about a sacred oath he would never tell AS HE IS TELLING IT.

Love this song, thanks for your reaction. I knew it would be a high number. It kind of reminds me of Harper Valley PTA. A complete 2 hour made for TV movie from a 3 minute song. Lots of people have taken a secret to their grave to protect someone they love. I will be playing this clip many times throughout the day. Thanks again Don.

You did interpret it right. It was the son of the man that found the ring. I have always loved this song and the story telling it tells. I have never heard any other genre of music that can tell a story like country music can.

What a great choice!!!! A song you never hear anymore, or even hear much about, almost totally forgotten, but it was a huge hit. As always, a great reaction! Your talking about how it would be resolved (because most of them usually are) was intriguing, but I think this one went one step further. I knew this song very well, but had forgotten about that last part - that it was his own father, and he threw the ring away to protect his memory. I was expecting the record, was surprised to see the live performance, but Buck Trent on that electric banjo is a treat all hIs own.
@mt33113 жыл бұрын
The opening is Buck Trent on the electric banjo. He want on to be on Hee Haw. He can sling it on that banjo. He is on Porters left. He used to be a member of the Wagonmasters, which was Porters band. Trent has a place in Branson If I remember correctly. Trent is changing the pitch on those strings by manipulating the tuners. He is bending notes. I have never seen anyone do that before or after. Good technique.

Great song & I loved your reaction. Porter’s last song released just before he died is a great one also & he did a music video for it featuring Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Suprelatives. It’s called Committed To Parkview. It’s a great Country Classic that was also done by The Highwaymen.

You really have to stay the whole distance when it comes to cleverly-written country songs to get the punchline when it comes up in the last verse. Porter sang this in such a matter-of-fact way that it disarms you and therefore don't expect the twist when it comes. I think this tale was based on a real life incident and it is one of the best known songs associated with the "Thin Man From West Plains". The guy playing the electric banjo is Buck Trent and was a legendary picker on his own right. Another great reaction/rating, Don, and keep rockin' and rollin' dat country, dude.

It's nice hearing this from the perspective of someone who hasn't heard it before. Porter was a country music fixture but I like his duets with Dolly more than his solos. Country music singers should be required to wear those suits, huh.

@@RockN2Country Hi and thanks for letting me know ,I watched them both and the one with the Statler Brothers didn't do them justice ,and the one with Dwight was probably (you are right to have been shocked) not a good choice either Dwight is such a talented songwriter and artist I Sang Dixie, Guitars Cadillacs ,A Thousand Miles from Nowhere, Close all the Honky Tonks ,Fast as You all would be good choices but I am just going by my taste.I really enjoy your channel and your reactions to the music Thanks for sharing, Sorry for the negativity. I am sure you have heard that Harold Reid of the Statler Brothers has just passed away in the last couple of months , They had retired in 2002 and have not sung together since but they were one of the very best country groups of all time as far as I am concerned .Back on Dwight I did see the one with Buck Owens, that was a good example of his talent I enjoyed that one .

also I can see you really are interested in the music and lyrics itself the whole presentation, you should read The Statler Brothers an Anthology it was written by Don Reid ( brilliant writer) tells history of each and every song they wrote and recorded You'll understand them better also he and Harold wrote Random Memories a book of their years on the road very goodand easy reading Thanks for your patience
