The line between madness and genius is thin ... and it ran through the minds of the Captain and his magic men, whose unique music, to the uninitiated, might at first listening seem chaotic. Yet it is precisely organised, rhythmically complex and terrifically funky art.

I was late to the party with Captain Beefheart. Oh, I’d heard “Willie the Pimp” on “Hot Rats” (Zappa), but had never delved into anything else. On summer break in college, stuck in Janesville, Wisconsin where I didn’t know a soul, I got “Shiny Beast” and “Doc at the Radar Station” from the public library. More than once as I listened to those albums, I found myself laughing out loud. (“Tropical Hot Dog Night” was one that got me going.) In the subsequent years, I’ve gone back and listened to his earlier stuff. I don’t love all of it, but at his best, when the planets are properly aligned, he’s a force of nature.

No shit, I would've LOVED to see this iteration of TMB (and the post TMR/Decals line-up), they are absolutely fire. Apparently the famed rock writer Lester Bngs asked Gary Lucas (about Flavour Bud Living) "Gary, is that you playing the top or bottom part?". To which he replied: "no Lester it's all me, performed live". Lucas said it's the highest compliment he ever received as a guitarist. Fancy starting out as CBATMB's manager and then pulling THAT (and the Ice Cream material) out of his instrument...talk about hiding your light under a bushel!

@@DGdescendant22 Harsh? He was brutal against the members, especially in the early days. Read John "Drumbo" French's book Through the Eyes of Magic. But yes, he was an painter and a sculptor. So his art had to be 100 % perfect. Taking aside his infantile ego. Being a result of his parents taking him out of school to be a sculptor, he was seen as a prodigy child. That boosted his ego beyond measurement. He never really learned to care for other people and co-exist with others in a normal way, sadly. His wife being the sole exemption however. Frank Zappa handled him very well though. Making fun of him, "Donnie".

That’s my uncle Gary Lucas! True legend. Travis picking master. Check my fretboard invention 🎸🙌🏼 it’s fully issued patent. I cut vertical scallops into the fretboard allowing FretCorner bends on ALL strings. Many guitarist such as Kirk Hammett or dream theatre to bass like Wojtek have done this trick on the high string so my invention evolved this style. It adds new x notes to pulloffs and new vibrato plus bends to create new rhythms not possible on a standard fretboard. Takes proper technique and tone to achieve

The 80s never could've handled it. Fortunately artists like Zappa, Bowie, King Crimson, Iggy Pop, Talking Heads, and a few others kept things relatively weird. They represented avant garde rock fairly well, but I concur that nothing was quite like Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band (in all of its permetations). I would also recommend Max Webster, a unique prog rock/hard rock band from Canada. Unfortunately, they only released 5 studio albums from 1976-80 before breaking up in 82. They were fairly obscure outside of Canada, but were very popular there and sold alot of albums. They were deemed an eccentric Rush knockoff by their record label and only ever toured internationally as an opening act. They did open for the likes of Rush, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, REO Speedwagon, and a few other iconic bands. Vocalist/Kim Mitchell achieved international fame and commercial success in the 80s, but he played much more conventional pop/rock (Go for a Soda, Patio Lanterns, etc), but his band Max Webster were one of a kind. Hints of Yes, Rush, Van Halen, Zappa, Blue Oyster Cult, and other bands. Check it out.

I love how the French-speaking presenter at very beginning states that Don Van Vliet "spent several years in the American Navy as a cabin-boy" [in French "mousse" can mean that, or just "very junior rank"] "until he worked his way up to [the rank of] Captain." I've got to think that there's been a translation gap or a put-on or both somewhere in this misapprehension on the part of the French presenter, so charming in his enthusiasm and willingness to believe that Don would pass muster in Navy whites for years and years until finally attaining the rank of Captain! Otherwise, how to explain it!

Antoine de Caunes the french presenter speaks very well English and obviously knows that Don never been in the navy. It's french humour, a way to notice that Don was no t a beginner and deserve his title

@@Tindersticks34 . . . I get the joke. In my original comment I noted ". . . or a put-on," which signifies in. English " . . . or a straight-faced joke." Whether or not it's a good joke is probably what's lost in translation.
