Commenting on 11/27/2022. As a user of the Paoli race guns in Indycar and Sportscar I can tell you that the difference between the guns shown here and those used on current center nut spindles is night and day. We run nearly 500 psi line pressure through huge hoses from a manifold with at least 5 full nitrogen bottles wide open. High pressure, high flow. These bottles are often changed during a race (multiple times during Sportscar races). They will break a wrist if you aren't ready. In the event of a stubborn nut it's always best to "burst" the trigger, a constant pull is less effective. Guns, which tend to be custom built by he teams, are rebuilt after every race weekend, race guns are only used during the race itself, we have separate practice guns for the other sessions. The motors tend to be titanium, the vanes are carbon fiber, the front housing is also carbon fiber. They have oversized heads on the reverse shuttles to enable the user to hit it easily or in the case of Indycar (where the tire changer swaps wheels himself) to drop it and switch it as it hits the ground. Some guns are auto reverse after sensing the load decrease after loosening the nut.

@michaelovitch3 жыл бұрын
If you want rpm/ipm you need to lighten the rotor. Drilling betwen the vanes would help. Increasing exhaust size will slower exhaust air flow,and reduce pressure period duration timing, unless they are oval. You need to ovalise to not loose pressure timing. It's like a fixed ignition timing on an engine, or a two stoke / rotary engine : you are stuck with a window of efficiency if you make round exhaust ports.
@TorqueTestChannel3 жыл бұрын
Hey yeah that makes a lot of sense. In this case we wern't after RPM, just more pressure differential for more force since there is no compression or power stroke, just the intake creating the surface area pressure. But the rotary comparison makes a lot of sense for getting rid of it
@michaelovitch3 жыл бұрын
@@TorqueTestChannel For more force,you need to increase hammering mass,or increase impact per minutes ,so acceleration of the hammers or reduce energy loss in the tool (increase efficiency) Looser ball bearings would reduce drag, and increase efficiency. thin oil instead of grease in bearings would do the same,without seals. Reducing rotating mass except hammer mass would help too,like the rotor weight. Reducing the volume (displacement) between vanes will increase rotation speed, Using a very cold gas with a very high density can help too. Porting the exhaust duct up to the exit can help too,and not only the ports in the stator. The quick coupler on the hose itself will reduce the air volume a lot,you can use barb fittings,you can get more rotation speed back.

Also maybe if there is any difference (except for speed until the required torque is applied) if you use a mid torque or a high torque gun? Wide five hubs makes it 3 seconds longer then regular size hubs. My guys are all 15-18 year old highschool football players that volunteer to put for me at huge races and they are fast we got it down to 14.5 seconds on average. that's fast for a few kids doing 4 tires on wide five hubs and 10 gallons of fuel and if needed the Jackman also does rear jackbolt adjustments through the two holes on rear window to adjust cross and rear bite and add 3 seconds for a sway bar adjustment under the hood. And also NASCAR and asphalt race teams have a special socket that won't strip the lugs and goes on by it's self so you don't ever have to let off the trigger for the whole tire if you want they are flanged wide on the end. Sounds like they let off the trigger cuse the lug slows down the motor every time you hit a lug taking tires off and on

Haven't ported an impact gun yet, but have done so with a sander with great results. As to why, well, i worked at a body shop with limited air supply. It was so limited that when more than about three sanders were going the pressure would drop to below 40. At that point a stock IR/HF dual action sander has no power what so ever. Porting the exhaust however allowed that same sander to run to as low as 15-20 psi with enough power to be useful. And BTW, never port/drill out intake side of an air tool. As stated in the video, air would not be able to empty out fast enough and the tool will be absolutely gutless, even compared to stock.

Not really, unless it's the only thing you need and you already have a good air compressor. I run Milwaukee electric tools for everything from compact drills to my weed eaters and chainsaws. For most people the batteries and chargers will be purchased either way for other tools so the impact being electric also is inconsequential. The electric is also just a flat out winner for anything outside of the shop. I bring one with whenever we go on trips just in case I need to change a tire on anything, luckily I've never used it to change my own tire on the road but I have changed plenty of other peoples and 8 can guarantee they were glad my impact was battery powered.

It's easy to get over 200 psi CO2 (better) or nitrogen (cylinder holds a LOT less but NASCAR doesn't care. I barely use air tools any more but if it's an impact it goes on the CO2 cylinder (with a fair length hose so the CO2 can expand). I collect CO2 cylinders for exchange since I also use them for welding. Try it! No need for a spendy powertank. Scuba tank regulators for air tools also exist.

You guys ever think about testing a Rad Gun on your bench ? That’s My- “You Brought this on Yourself” Gun. I know it’s not “technically” a impact, but if your looking for torque, mine is rated for 4000lbs I believe. Have to check the label.

Use a few drops of the old Prolong additive lubricant. I haven't measured any of my tools with a tach but they do sound like they zip up quicker. 😆😂🤣

I wouldn't be crazy shocked if an Indy team let you bring a rig out to test their gun setup on a testing day, they're pretty gung-ho and laid back compared to F1.. though both might see it as a chance for more fan exposure, you never know! Not sure how you'd go about asking around for that though..

Don't forget to ask for the blowers the F1 teams use to cool the cars when they're in the garage! It'd be fun to see how many beans those have!

@2:45... Did you turn the gun up to "5" before testing? Looks like it's set to "4" here. @4:36... Looks like it's still set to "4".

It arrived on four, at 4:36 it's on 5

As come comments below mentioned, it would be nice to know what fittings you are using and also the air hose diameter. Neat testing though.
@TorqueTestChannel3 жыл бұрын
All of our air guns use the same per ep1. Milton v type high flow and the hose size recommended by the brand which is 3/8" here. Always 25ft
@bradjohnson96713 жыл бұрын
@@TorqueTestChannel Thanks, you probably have it listed somewhere but I'm a bit new to the channel. Good info, I've switched most of my fittings to V type. I especially like the quick couple without having to pull back the "ring".

I bought the titanium version years ago when I first started working, it's tired as hell, barely any torque. Maybe I can revive it with these new parts.
@isaactrockman44173 жыл бұрын
You should try one inch drive railway impact guns
@fredlowe62603 жыл бұрын
You should see if high-flow fittings, like milton's purple V-style or flexzilla's make any difference. Seems like it would be a cheaper upgrade than buying a whole new gun
@zackhaas32673 жыл бұрын
That's what they use....
@bigj2313 жыл бұрын
@@zackhaas3267 the red interchange is the industrial fitting, not the high-flow V-style fitting. If you're really trying to increase flow, you use an open quick connect and a ball valve instead of these self-closing quick connects. For even more flow, just hook the hose straight into the gun.
