Portishead were considered a leading act of the "trip-hop" genre.

...And, FYI No band that's affiliated to "trip-hop" like the name given to the genre, I think it's cool. Which is kind of a guarantee that it's probably not.

Now listen to the studio version. This band is hip hop beats with so much moodiness and feeling. Their first two albums were on high rotation for me in the 90s.

Portishead released their seminal album Dummy 30 years ago yesterday, securing their place in history as a foundational stone in the emerging genre of trip hop. That's what brought me to this video today and man what a joy it is to share someone hearing Glory Box for the first time. It's almost like getting to hear it for the first time again myself. Beth Gibbons, enough said. If you wanna hear an incredible tribute in a very different genre, see what you think of the Glory Box cover by Author & Punisher.

I love seeing the joy on the face of the next generation, when they listen to music that transformed my life when I was in college. Trust me.... I had the same reaction as you did, when I first heard them. Cheers! Happy that you enjoyed it.

I hear this and it makes me ink of Billie Holiday and the blues ladies from the 40s. I'm transported back to a smoky late night bar in the grungy part of the city; where the whisky is cheap and the lights are dim. Truly special is Beth Owens

Trip hop. What you're hearing is Trip Hop. Portishead and Massive Attack are without a doubt the Number 1 exponents of that sound. Portishead Dummy was an utterly brilliant album and you can pretty much pick anything with that jazzy 30's style sample and loop, but also Massive Attack (also saw them live, amazing) and their Mezzanine and Blue Lines albums you simply can't go wrong with. Try Sour Times or Roads from Portishead, and Protection, Unfinished Sympathy and Teardrop from Massive Attack.

The band was started by a DJ. The band itself is a DJ, a guitarist, and a singer. I think that combination really makes their sound unique.

Nah, I mean, that is hardly enough of a story. These cats studied the sound they wanted to create, like architects building the world's first bridge they carefully put all the pieces together and it took them many years. "DJ" is not a synopsis for that.

I saw Portishead for the first and only time in like 95 or 96. And the thing that struck me the most was that she had a cigarette lit for the entire show! So, good for you for catching that 😂. Also the Dj for Portishead did a dj set before they came on that blew my mind. It was an awesome show and one I’ll always remember

Also, for those not in the know. A glory box is traditionally a gift given to the man to compensate them for the fact they have to provide for the woman (rather than her father) after marriage. There may also be a deliberate undertone of erm a different kind of box as a double entendre (a french phrase meaning two meanings). I'm gonna leave that one in your imagination. It seems she's not playing unlike the other girls...
