I had a feeling I may enjoy night photography in a very general sense, but I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. In my opinion, the Portra looks great at night and I am absolutely looking forward to shooting more film at night!

Gosh. I've never picked up a photo camera outside of my cellphone, but I keep watching these videos and now I'm wondering if I should try out film photography for myself.

it doesn’t have to cost a lot. a disposable point and shoot and a good is a great way to see if you enjoy it. Def can be a lot fun as when you get more advanced cameras you can control images and results you can’t with a cell phone. Lots of fun.

Just get some flavor of '90s Canon EOS with a 50mm prime lens. They're cheap and much more convenient to use than an older unit like an AE-1P while also accepting modern EF mount lenses. You'll have to clean around the shutter curtain to keep it reliable but that's pretty easy and there's KZbin videos on it. I recommend starting with black and white. Just get a Patterson tank and light proof changing bag and it's super easy and forgiving to develop yourself. Start with an inexpensive negative scanner. Kodak and a few others make some that work fine. Constantly sending your rolls to labs is where it gets expensive.

@@honkhonkler7732 great options if you don’t care about the retro looking camera. so many nikons, canons etc for pennies.

I sometimes recommend beginners get a really cheap, used, digital camera. Quickly you’ll find if you really enjoy the hobby just by seeing how motivated you are to go out and shoot. Also helps you learn the exposure triangle without wasting a ton of money on developing and scans just to get something poorly exposed or blank.

Night shots look good. Did you meter the daytime shots at the same iso? Daytime look underexposed. This film does well at iso 640. A little extra light will brighten them daytime scenes.

I did meter them the same. I wonder if I was trying to lean towards the cloud exposure and that may have caused them to be a little under. David's shots were a stop over exposed (Portra 400) and I think they have a bit more pleasing of a day time feel.

@@alexwahoski Iso 640 or even 400 for that film would help because it needs light (idk what you shot so it’s not clear to me why). But as for the metering, def want to expose for shadows.

How were you metering the night shots, and were you sticking to reciprocity or shooting longer?

For a majority of these shots, I would meter for the scene overall, and then depending on what the window had in it, or the framing, I would meter for the windows and then the exterior, and if it was more than couple of stops I would choose to lean one way or the other, usually towards the exterior. I never had to adjust for reciprocity because I think my longest exposure in this video would've been 2 seconds. I'll try to talk more about this in the next video!
