Can you even buy (without military grade budgets) high res infrared cameras that are this good? Or is it some sort of near IR filter on a regular camera that bleeds into IR a bit
@lightleakss4 ай бұрын
@@dafbloggs7376 to my knowledge, high resolution IR camers are quite expensive. Even lower resolution one are too (see Flir) but only because they're used as visual temperature measuring tools ratger than to make images. Modern cameras are all natively sensitive to IR to some degree but a filter is added in the manufacturing process to stop that. On some cameras you can have the filter removed with the so called "full spectrum mod" which is likely what Jason's using here. It's the same camer he used to take the digital aerochrome photo he shows near the end. He did a whole video about the camera conversion and editing process at some point, definitely worth a watch
@404Anymouse4 ай бұрын
@@dafbloggs7376You can get full spectrum conversions of stock cameras, essentially removing the hot filter from the sensor, sometimes even replacing them with IR-only-pass filter, and optionally combined with scraping the Bayer matrix color filter from the sensor.

Hell yeah! Love the use of the black and white infrared video, very unique look and adds to the surprise when you see the developed photo. One thing you could try is using the digital infrared cam to meter for Aerochrome/EIR shots. I did this one time when I brought the RB67 out for a long hike, realized it was overcast and not sunny as I'd expected, and stubbornly decided to shoot anyway rather than wait for a better day. It's a bit slower, and it's not perfectly 1-1 because digital sensors are sensitive to a slightly wider range of the near infrared spectrum than Aerochrome, but I don't know how many stops of light difference this would translate to in practice; in any case, the shots came out well exposed. You just want to make sure both cameras are using the same or fairly similar filters.

On shooting expired slide film, from what I've been told and what I've experimented with myself, overexposing one stop and pulling in the first developer stage only by reducing time by about 20% (and keeping the rest of the development process the same) seems to be pretty reliable for avoiding some of the base fog issue with old slide film. It's not a perfect solution, and I haven't tried anything more than one stop, but it helps a little bit anyway! No idea if it'd be a different case with infrared slide film, though.

Is it possible that infrared light and visible light don’t correlate? Like, the scene has less visible light but more infrared light somehow? That way, your meter would for sure give you a false reading for IR

For me, a big part of shooting film photography is embracing the limitations and imperfections of film. I just spent $250 for a Canon New F1 and shot 2 rolls of film with it. Only to find out it has an inconsistent shutter capping issue. Film photography is not for the easily dissuaded 😅. All this makes the ‘good’ images look even better. Of course, photography is art and thus subjective.
