This is definitely my favorite version cause he doesn't try to play like Louis, he plays like Wynton.

Mr Ellington, and Mr Marsalis captured Satchmo's style. I think that was the first time I ever heard scat come out of a trumpet, but it did. What a beautiful piece of music.

I've always been mostly a fan of traditional jazz. Modern jazz never struck a chord with me. Every time I think of jazz, I think of it's original sound--the one that made you smile and get up and feel like dancing. I don't think jazz was ever meant to be the baby-making music it's associated with nowadays. Wynton Marsalis is one of those modern jazz artists who embraces the original sound, which is why I appreciate him as a musician.
@GrumpyStormtrooper4 жыл бұрын
When you said modern sound I thought you meant stuff like Michael Brecker. I was confused when you said "baby making music" and understood you meant smooth jazz

There's always something great about seeing how a musician adds or twists some other style. Plus, hearing a familiar riff in a great song just gives me the heebie jeebies. Good job Wynton!

@jackp-w38864 жыл бұрын
He’s not cocky when you compare him to Arturo or those types who let high notes boost their ego way too much. Wynton is well disciplined and doesn’t fall into the high/fast/loud trap
@gregaudrey42994 жыл бұрын
Jack P-W Agreed.I’m also a big fan of Arturo. My issue with a lot of “high note “ players that play high notes because they can, is that there’s not enough musical\melodic use of this register...screamin’ ain’t musical,IMO.
@cadillacdude197514 жыл бұрын
that performance ladies and gents is why this man is the best trumpet player of the 20th century. period. not taking anything away from Maynard, Louis, Doc, Artural, Bill Chase, Eric Miyashiro, Lin Biviano, Greg Geisbert, (i can keep going with the names) or any other, but this is just simply fantastic. the end. Wynton is the master.

He's not copying Louis, Miles, or Bix. Wynton Marsalis has got his own chops. Very nice.
@johnsurs2215 жыл бұрын
I don't that Wynton played like Louis in the other version; he played in the cool New Orleans style which has been made so iconic by Louis. I think that when playing a Duke Ellington song, it is better to play in that style, and so I like that other version better. However, this version is still great, and like another poster said, Wynton is playing with more of his style that he has developed over the years. Thank you for posting this.

Agree! Jazz can never be a copy of something. If it is, it's not Jazz. It can, and often is, be an interpretation of something, though. And that bytheway goes for all decent music. Mozart wrote piano concertos for Bach's sonatas for instance, much more borrowing was taking place there... but with all the added strings, it was something new. Modern HipHop borrows ALL THE TIME via samples. Music is language. We use same words. We deliver different messages.

copying isn't a word that defines jazz, because technically everyone is copying each other. copying is too harsh of a word, that's why we use transcribing and borrowing ideas

what people need to remember abotu being a jazz great like Wynton is not only knowing how to play jazz, but knowing what notes not to play.

He should play a trumpet that sounds like that more often. I usually skip listening to Wynton because his usual trumpet sounds about the polar opposite of this all the time.

@KevTheYoungMusicGeru12 жыл бұрын
@yralm07 you must first "copy" and emulate those who can speak a language before you speak it yourself. and to get to a higher level you have to do this with the people who can speak the language best. from there you can do a lot and truly express yourself and have your own voice. I think I've heard miles or chet say something like "sometimes it takes a long time to play like yourself"
@davisc192615 жыл бұрын
I doubt Wynton ever tries to play like Louis (or mimic) his playing. Playing like Louis Armstrong is more than just playing trumpet. However, I like both versions of this song as well.
