Thanks! I just freehand paint with the shape-based drawing method. You can hear all about it on my patreon account if you're curious.

Liquin is the best - but you're right, it stinks and it's toxic, had to get rid of it as I work at home. Gamblin solvent free gel is nice, for alla prima :)

I was using the gamblin solvent-free gel as well. I did notice that it caused a lot of darkening issues, so i went back to my odorless mineral spirits and stand oil combination. I think the reason the gel caused darkening for me was I was using too much of it.

@ wow, never heard of it darkening before, but thanks for the heads up! I don’t use much at all. Good luck with the Liquin smell :)

I think the issue comes down to how any medium will cause the paint to brighten up a bit in the range of midtones to lighter tones. Then when the paint cures and the oil sinks in it darkens back up. There's a great video from a few years back on KZbin call "Voodoo darkening" that demonstrated the issue.

I use a vent fan designed for soldering to handle the fumes from liquin - its quiet and has a carbon filter which helps a lot

I'll have to take a look at something like that! Thanks for the idea!
