Great video. Before I started painting as a hobby, I practiced by painting on glass. I painted white enamel on one side of ordinary window glass. When it had dried I painted on the other side using a dark colored varnish. Since varnish in those days was long drying, it was easy to push the varnish around or wipe out as needed. When finished, clean glass for the next practice session. If it was left to dry, scrape off using a one sided razor blade. Quite enjoyable.....and cheap.

I am a new subscriber to your channel, and have watched a number of your Plein air paintings which I love. This one is, of course, very different. I have never painted a portrait, not sure I would even like to! But what I love about your narration of this painting is all the information you’ve given about your training, your process, your style, etc. It’s so helpful to hear all of that, especially now when we can’t attend classes in person. THANK YOU so much!
@JessicaHenry4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Linda! I really appreciate it! One thing I try to portray in my channel by the variety is that all these various disciplines are all interconnected. Still life’s, landscapes and portraits- they all bear the same concepts! When I made that connection the world and it’s painting possibilities seemed more open to me. My hope is that more people will find that same peace and restoration behind the easel!

Hello Jessica ... In an effort to refresh my own approach to painting, I have looked at many of the tutorials available on line. Yours is one the very best I've seen. Your style, methodology and comfortable narrative carry great authority with the process; the outcome is a pleasure to see. I will now paint a sign that says: "Go slow. Rushing through a painting is only going to make you want to throw it away faster." Sound advice ;-) Many thanks.

Very impressive tutorial. I think it's the best I`ve seen. I am trying to get away from the projector, and you have shown me how. Drawing with the brush instead of a pencil, Duh, why couldn`t I figure that out. That way you can make adjustments on the fly. Your stuff on hair is a big help too. I like to work fast and appreciate fast tutorials. I am easily bored. Another plus, you are easy to look at, very attractive. Thanks!
@JessicaHenry7 жыл бұрын
Aw, thank you Richard! I understand artists propensity for "boredom" as I deal with it too, so I try to keep them short. (I personally think it's not really boredom, but an interest to just get onto something else!) Haha! Yep, the brush drawing is for me, the only way to go. You're already in that painterly mind-set and it's just easier to move things around. Glad you enjoyed it!

I do spend more time editing, than filming my projects for sure. hahaha Those that don't do video's, can't relate to the dedication one has to have, so they can share their passion to other's. Well done, that’s exactly my method of drawing, measuring and coloring on canvas ... it is so much easier to use the brush and black and white paint and just concentrate on the accuracy of drawing and getting the values right... jumping to colors can confuse the artist and may end up with a messy painting when you have to correct the drawing after putting so much color 👍🙏👏😘

Your videos are so inspiring! Thanks for your work. I have only one suggestion - please, show your palette all the time, let us know what colours you are mixing right now what is the way of mixing. It's very useful, I can see action (palette) and effect (canvas), so I learn much faster. This picture is super, a while of mother's life... Beautiful!

This is just beautiful! I haven't taken the leap to oils yet and only dealt with acrylics. Is it much more difficult to do the same techniques with acrylics? Is it possible? I know acrylics are considered less professional. Gorgeous work! And great instruction! Thank you!
@JessicaHenry7 жыл бұрын
Acrylics would dry too quickly to be able to "erase" the paint. I know a lot of people who are using the water soluble oil paints. Try those! Thanks for the kind words!
