I am fascinated by painting portrait skills. To me it is like black magic. I don't understand where how and what makes such great results and i cannot do it. I greatly admire this skill and it completely eludes me. I tried to learn as an autodidact and it was nowhere close from mediocre it was garbage. When i watch this video with the painter explanation, i don't get it, whatever he says does not explain how he does it. This remains like magic and impenetrable to me.

I am *amazed at the range of colours from the Zorn palette!* I truly appreciated the different camera angles, music and your commentary throughout. Very well done! And a big *thank-you* for telling us that this took you 4 hrs + lunch! I learned a great deal from watching you mix your paints and how you moved your brushes and their description. Nice to know I don't have to spend a fortune since I was given some new brushes from Michaels and didn't really know whether to spend money on "the proper tools". I have been watching videos for half the day and night and yours was the best by FAR!. Thanks for answering questions in your comment section too-that is rare. From Toronto ☮

I was fascinated to learn about the Zorn palette. I discovered I had an aptitude for portrait painting, which was a total surprise, 2 1/2 years ago. Every body was astonished, especially me and my art teacher! So thank you for your videos/tutorials. They are a great help to this student. Henry Bedingfeld (in the UK).

Thank you for your reply. I do have a question. In one of your recent videos you described the proportions 1 part stand oil to 4 parts paint thinner as your medium, and went on to say that this was essentially a retouching varnish; at other times you call it oiling out your painting so that you can continue the painting when it has dried. My art teacher tells me to use a retouching varnish no sooner than 6 months after I finish the painting or there would be a serious danger of doing terrible damage. It seems to me that your oiling out mixture is not really a retouching varnish. Please can let me know what you think. Thanks. Henry.

Anders Zorn is from my home town Mora. I have been to his house and museum many times (the house is part of the museum). He was a brilliant painter. He is like the local celebrity for our town, haha! Didn't know there was such a things as a "Zorn Palette" though. He had a great saying which is "tvivlar man på egen förmåga skapar man ej stora ting" Basically "Doubting your own abilities you will not create great things" I have it framed in my studio. Thank you for a great video! I will subscribe 🙏😊

Glad to come across this video. I just finished organizing a 6-week session of Monitored Life Studies, where 10 of us painted the model. I had decided to limit myself to the Zorn palette. I sure wish I had watched your video before I started. I had a hard time mixing the colors with any 'life' to them, as every color seemed rather muddy. To pre-mix the basics was a great tool, and to start using the eraser brush was extremely helpful (rather than a rag eraser). Will give the Zorn palette another try now that I have more information. Thanks!!

Vatican approved colors , earth tones . I remember reading years ago they considered certain colors were responsible for effecting people negatively. From what I remember about the article I read , but I have always loved the Vatican's art collection so I adopted it just based on its esthetic impact in relation to nature pre 17th cen. That painting came out great my friend , I usually let it dry then glaze , but I like the energy of the continued flow of alla prima and I can see more color play develop in real time .

Hi. I would like you explain as your paint , why you cool a colour down or warm a colour up, where you put warm and cool colours and their influences in the portrait. I think i know that it's to do with shadows but an explanation of when , where and why would complete your excellent commentaries. Thank you so much for giving us your time. By the way I watch in the UK.
@RanchoZabara5 жыл бұрын
A simple explanation is that if the light area is warm (warm light) the shadow area will be cool. ( Some reflected warms can be lightly brushed into the cool if warranted by light bouncing around). I'm sure Yupari could give you a much better explanation than just this basic.

This is by far the most comprehensible painting process video I have ever watched. Subscribed right away. Can you further explain the mixtures of paint thinners you have and when you use them? Do you suggest stuff like liquin? How do you seal your paintings as well? Sorry for spamming you with questions, but I switched to watercolor when I realized it was less materials and I have a whole bunch of oil paints that I want to use!
@YupariArtist7 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Thanks for watching my videos! For the thinners, I use the odorless paint thinner to clean the brushes between certain mixtures (like from say red/burnt umber to green/yellow). The 1/5 stand oil 4/5 thinner medium is used to make the paint more fluid (like to cover large areas- background, hail and such). I actually do use liquin (since it is a fast drier) when working in layers ( underpainting - 1st color pass - final color pass) ---Perhaps I should do a video on that too? --- Feel free to ask me any questions you may have in portrait painting/painting, I'll do my best to answer them appropriately. Thanks again for watching my videos!!! Yupari

I was thinking near the end of this video if you ever discover something that needs an adjustment and then you came back from lunch. It seems this kind of thing happens to me. I use a mirror and the reverse image helps, but it seems the more I work and add paint and color something wrong in the drawing becomes evident. I feel sometimes flaws somehow stay hidden until the painting progresses. Do you think this normal and part of the process, or should I spend more time on the drawing? I would like to suggest and request a char coal sketch and an oil self portrait from a mirror. I would like to see how you use char coal, and there is not a good example of a real self portrait on youtube. I think you're a fantastic artist.
@YupariArtist7 жыл бұрын
Hi jeff! Yes I believe it is perfectly normal for things to stay hidden until the painting progresses. It is always the case for me, and I read that John Singer Sargent would repaint faces multiple times until it's right. As you mentioned, mirror certainly helps to see discrepancies. I once spent 12 hours on a portrait from a live model, only to repaint the eyes in the last 20 minutes (and it worked). Tho, I was probably just luck that I was able to fix it. Thank you for watching my videos!! I wish you all the best with your artwork, and feel free to ask me anything that comes to mind with portrait painting!

Great video!! Fascinating to see the mixes for the Zorn palette. I wonder if premixes would make sense if one was to use the palette regularly for portraits? I wonder what Zorn did?

@YupariArtist7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Great advise! I can certainly focus on edges/glazing with my videos! Tho, I don't really glaze too much on portrait (glaze I think of being flat washes/layers of paint) rather I build up thin gradations of value. Thank you for the ideas! Figuring out what content to create is definitely the most difficult task for me in making these videos. Thank you for watching my videos!

I know nothing about paint but that seems enough to answer your question. Acrylic and oil are completely different technique. That's why an acrylic painting never looks like an oil painting and vice versa. So no, you can't do what he is doing with acrylic paint.
