Portraits on the Mamiya 645 pro

In this video i took the Mamiya 645 pro for a portrait shoot to Serpentine Falls. unfortunately we didn't realise what time the park closed so we had to rush the first roll of the shoot. This was also the first time scanning colour negative film so the scans aren't the best or most consistent. but I'll be working on them as I'll be doing all my own scanning from now on.

I don't know that I would have had her wear a red dress with portra. It's a pastelly color palette. Her blonde hair and fair skin would have been wonderful with pastels, creams, whites. Which lens? Seems like you were back a bit far for an 80, perhaps a 150? What apertures? What did you rate the Portra 800 at? I have an RB as well and believe me, the 645 is an easier camera on location... and I am a bodybuilder. I wish I had a nickel for every time I was told the dreaded "you have 5 minutes." So I understand the being rushed. In those circumstances your meter is your best friend. Got a magazine cover cause I could quickly finish set up for an additional light set up. As for developing yourself, my lab was $10 shipping, $15 dev and scan so a $12 roll of film was $37 for scans and THREE WEEK turn around. Now developing costs me less than $3 and I have 3 HOUR turn around. I use a 46 mp Nikon d850 for scans, way bigger than my labs. And since I scan tethered to lightroom, can bracket each shot with just a click to change shutter speed and a click to fire and I have the histogram to guide me.

Which experience did you prefer? C330 or 645?

It depends on what you shoot. If it’s portraits or work where you need to be fast and efficient and not worried about being loud. Then the 645 is good. But I like the c330 for landscapes walk around and general photography better. The c330 is more of a fun camera that’s slower and the 645 is more efficient and like a work camera. If I could only have one I’d take the c330 tho

I'm doing that dance right now... I shoot with Fuji GFX, have a nice 80 2.8N but have been strangely drawn to that C330... Lewis, your 65 3.5 portrait session has created great confusion and clarity in my mind... LOL.

I use my Sony a7iv, the negative supply basic stand the essential film holder and raleno LED light. And then convert with negative lab pro. Still gotta work on the colours and find a consistent look from negative lab pro. Each roll came out a bit different so I’ve got to figure out the best exposure for the negative scans and how that affects the colours of the converted images
