The Portuguese 1974 Eurovision song ended a dictatorship. When will your faves?
@escfan38784 жыл бұрын
Regarding the 2019 song, the message/lyrics are nowhere near the "technology is bad" thing you mentioned. The song is about trying to use a cellphone to contact someone who died and who he misses a lot and finding that no matter how much technologically advanced we are, some things are still impossible and the experience that comes from not being able to reach those he loves and missing them is still as painful and frustrating as it ever was. He talks about breaking his cellphone in anger and there's a very good play on words throughout about who's really dead, the person he lost or he, who is experiencing all this pain. I know I'm making this sound a lot more pretentious than it actually is, but there's actually a lot of merit in the lyrics. And this coming from someone who's not particularly fond of Conan Osíris' work in general. That's the issue with Portuguese entries at Eurovision. I mean, sure, there are a lot of entries that are just plain weak (I feel an irrational hate for 1987, for instance), but in the majority of cases, the songs are very lyrics-driven or have very specific contexts surrounding them (like the 1969-1976 run) and without understanding them, the songs fall flat, especially if what you're not familiar with Portuguese music roots and/or what you usually expect and want from Eurovision are the more radio-friendly, standard, commercial pop stuff (and there's obviously nothing wrong with that!). Portugal just doesn't really have much tradition of pop music and doesn't see it as representative of the country, so it rarely sends it to Eurovision. And when it does, it naturally fails to compare to other countries with a lot more production value and experience in the genre. I'd also argue that it's harder to connect with songs when you're just hearing 20 seconds of them and in a mixed pool of over 50 songs. But that's just the nature of the recap videos. EDIT: As for favorites, ask any Portuguese person to name a Eurovision song and most people will name "A Desfolhada", from 1969, a song which came second to last, before they even remember "Amar Pelos Dois" actually won the contest. I mean, we love the latter, but "A Desfolhada" is THE ONE.

A couple of things to say: your personal musical preference must be very specific as there are quite a few gems out there (although true, there are plenty of middle of the road ones too); the fact that still today you keep on battering Salvador is quite remarkable - yes he is a bit cocky, but he is also incredibly self-deprecating and has a sense of humour, looks like the sense of humour was lost on many a Eurovision fan sadly. Isn't it interesting that the one song that made it to the Eurovision movie was his?

-Portugal has participated in the Eurovision 51 times since its debut at the 1964 contest. Since then it has missed five contests (1970, 2000, 2002, 2013 and 2016). -They were holders of the record for most appearances in the contest without a win, until Portugal won at the 49th attempt, with Salvador Sobral in the 2017 contest This was Portugal's first top five result in the contest. -90s were the most successful decade for the country, reaching the top 10 four times. Portugal had admission to take part in the 2000 and 2002 contest but refused. Its place was taken by Latvia both times, which ended up victory and third place for Latvia

Wow! This was fun, guys!. Olá from Lisboa! Thanks for the funniest retrospective ever. I bet you're having so much fun doing these videos and that's what really matters. Has been a pleasure to see them all. I just can't stop ahah! Kudos to you! Although, two things: Portugal is a nation of poets, as we tend to define ourselves (hence all the sentiment and nosthalgia all over the songs. Either they make you feel something, or they're just pointless). I remember an episode ina fado house some years ago. There were two germans there and they started to cry while listening to fado, even if they didn't understand a word. it's the music itself and how it reaches your heart (or whatever viscerae) Damn! Also, imho Salvador is right when he says "music is not fireworks". That's why it became so boring to watch ESC for me. You have all those stagging effects to mask the low quality of the songs. It has gone that way but it could had developed in a different direction. They all sound the same or so. Afterall, this is supposed to be about music itself, being it more crappy or better. Anyway, looking forward for your new videos. Coolest channel! Best, much love and welcome to Lisboa whenever you feel like visiting us!

Thank you for your lovely comment! It was really fun to make these recaps, we learnt so much about each country and their entries over the years. We had a wonderful holiday in Lisbon and Madeira a few years ago, and we had dinner in a restaurant with some fauda singers, and we loved it! Perhaps you're right that the contest has changed, but for us that's all part of the magic. Seeing how different artists present their music as well as themselves and their messages is really fun to see each year! We can't wait to come back to Lisbon!

And let's be fair here, the only reason Portugal sent him at the time was because of the dictatorship and the regime wanting to validate Angola belonging to Portugal. So even though I applaude sending people of color when few dare to do it, to send one to try to justify colonies is very sad. 😢

The thing I will say for Portugal is that they have stuck to their roots & not sold out by sending generic sounding Eurovision songs penned by Swedes & sung in English. Having said that they do send rather dull songs & there is only one Eurovision winner worse than their 2017 winning entry imo (hello Norway 2009).

The 2008 and 2011 winners are much worse. Norway 2009 I would never classify as a bad winner.

Don’t think your review was fair and worse, think you were also very unkind and narrow minded. I doubt you like any song sung in a language other than english and french. What I dislike most is that according to you, Portugal has not brought anything to the Festival, has no merit, which is absolutely wrong and disrespectful. There are a lot of good songs, IF YOU ARE ABLE TO LISTEN WITHOUT PRE-JUDGEMENT! It’s so obvious from the video you don’t like Portugal at Eurovision. Your body language, your arrogant comments, often more concerned commenting the clothes, the hair than actually listing to the song. There are great songs: senhora do mar, Fado, Doce, Simone de Oliveira, Carlos paio, conquistador, I mean... and even worse at the end, thank you for throwing the bone that you’ll visit Portugal... I wouldn’t if i were you. There you can only hear portuguese music.

This react proves two very simple things: the terrible musical taste of someone with a restricted view of the world beyond their own reality, and also the typical english arrogance towards Portugal and the countries of southern Europe in general. Ohh, the sadness and depression is coming) Portugal is like an epitomee of hopelessness of this life, when they send endless ballads understandable only to them, they usually doesn't qualify (except Salvador); when they try something interesting and unique (criminally underrated 2011, no one understood the message, 2014 and 2019), they immediately get dead last place by the jury voting in the semi final. No exit((( Still can't understand the Salvador's win and don't know what was the hype around him that he received so many points, he probably even beat Alexander Rybak's percentage (or was maximally close). Usually this doesn't happen at Eurovision. 2017 is generally one of the weirdest years at Eurovision. Already in 2018, everything fell into place, they finished last with a similar song, being dead last (25th or 26th) by the televoting in half (!) of the countries. And the most interesting thing is that now a lot of people like 2018 more than 2017. Probably, I will never understand this world. My favourite is Quero ser tua (2014), what an ethnic bop, 6th place by the televoting but because of juries only one point wasn't enough for the qualification(((
