I am using Kriega OS32L soft luggage. Kriega sell a base plate that fixes to the oem or other hard luggage supports for the bmw gs/gsa, Africa twins. Each back fits strapped/locked into each base plate. It does not flap. Kriega also sell a security strap with a lock to offer some form of visual deterrent from theft but as you know, nothing is impossible to steal when the thief is professional. I have both hard and soft bags for my 1250 GSA. I find the soft bags better for protecting the bike and my legs when I have dropped it off road. However it can be a pain getting to stuff when it’s raining and there us no shelter. So if I were doing Scotland or Ireland I would go hard cases. If I was doing Europe or any longer Adventure, definitely soft bags.

Thanks that all sounds like good advice.

Hi Guys, ref luggage soft or hard, I prefer, for loads of reasons, soft luggage. It is lighter, cheaper, unbreakable and comes in many styles. My favorite is sausage-style stuffa bags. They are completely waterproof, can be big enough to accommodate all the camping gear - tent, sleeping bags, mattresses, cooking gear, chairs all in one bag. Then have throw-overs for the rest. Re the throw-overs I use bunjee cables from one side over to the other and that stops them flapping about.

@@ontheroadadventure It's really not common to clean bike chains in Portugal because it doesn't rain much, at least in the southern part of the country. If you service your bike on dealers they might do that, but on smaller shops, I doubt it, unless you ask for it to be done. That's why you didn't find any. From my experience (somewhat long), it's enough just to lube the chain. I do my own maintenance as well and always keep my chains lubed, and they last a lot. On a 1350 cc bike my current chain (JT, and not the heaviest duty one) has done around 85k km and it still has a bit more to go, although it's reaching it's limit. On another note: having the option of grilled fresh fish and you had bread and beer...that was plain blasphemy!... Cheers

Been following your series and have really enjoyed it. I would love to visit Portugal while going South to look aroun Gibraltar then heat back north through Spain. Regarding hard panniers, if you are getting hard panniers then probably best with Metal over Plastic. You would have probably found if they were metal boxes, when the guy in spain reversed into you they would have either been fine or just slightly bent. Block of wood and a hammer (or heavy boot), and you can normally bend them back into shape. If you want soft bags, check out LoneRider, Bumot, Kriega or SW Motech - all give good options at different price points. I really like the Mosko but they dont sell in UK so looking at import duty etc on top of the online price. There is a similar, but slightly cheaper version called Giant Loop (GL) that might be worth a look. Metal boxes, look at Bumot and Givi Trekker series. Hope the rest of the trip goes well.

Let me give you a few tips if I may. 1. Mosko Moto are probably the best soft bags mad and will last a long time. 2. Never put WD 40 on an o-ring chain because it will destroy the o-rings. 3. Stop at petrol station and get a container from the trash. Lift the diesel hose there should be plenty residual diesel in the line to use for cleaner on the chain. 4. As long as the chain is clean lubing it is not needed. Many people will debate both side of this. Hope this helps!
@WilliamWBG9 ай бұрын
WD-40 is not a chain lube but there have been countless test that have proven wd 40 will NOT hurt the O rings. WD40 is silicone based and silicone doesn’t hurt o rings. Bike Social has great amount of unbiased info and test on dozens of chain lubes. Maxima chain wax was one of the top performers and it’s cheap.

It seems no small wonder people who live in these sunnier countries seem to be generally happier and easy going, it just creates the feel good factor, imagine getting up everyday and spending time outside in the sunshine

mate, you can just ask for a 'bitoque' (steak with rice, potatoes and salad) - it's pronounced 'beetok'. Every portuguese restaurant has it.

I cant wait to do Portugal next year. You've made it look so much better. Love your videos. I will say the best thing to clean your chain with is GT85 I always take a small travel can with me when I go on tour.
@ontheroadadventure9 ай бұрын
Portugal is just stunning, some amazing motorcycle routes to find here
@jimtitt35719 ай бұрын
That depends on what you are doing, GT85 is basically WD40 with less water dispersal and PTFE. For an O-ring (X-ring or whatever) in our adventure bike shop we pressure-wash the bike and use WD40 to stop any surface rust. On the trail it's a petrol-soaked rag and WD40, we are carrying WD40 anyway as we use it for tyre changing lube, not something you want to use a PTFE product for!
