Oh, also, we HAD to have a NIF number to apply for our Residence Visa. I’ve been reading lately that they reject all applications without one. Best to take a vacation where you want to relocate and get the NIF, open a bank account ( visas have requirements for the amount you must have in a Portuguese bank account as well). There's timing, I have found a property and have been in contact with the real estate company and I was just going to look up how to get a NIF#, I remember you talking about this in a previous video. All goes well I should be in the Azores the later half of February.

My wife has obtained a Portuguese passport and I am in process of obtaining mine. Whenever we travel to the Azores we struggle most with transportation. We often go and stay on Flores for weeks at a time (our favorite of the seven islands we have visited so far). Car rental is astronomical and sometimes availability of rental cars is nonexistent. Have you purchased transportation? How do you recommend obtaining a car? Purchase locally? Ship one in? What else do I need to know? What are the pros and cons? If you guys haven’t done this yet it is a great topic to explore and report on.

That is awesome Curt! You are on the money, car rentals are way to much...especially in high season, if you can find one. The best solution is to buy a second hand car, which is what exactly what we did. Our car is a VW golf, had 84000 kms and we paid 3500 euros, we used Renault on Pico. We see more and more people selling cars. You can buy a car in any island, then move it to any island you prefer by ferry. My cousins have found amazing car deals in Lisbon, then transported it over. The worst thing would be to bring a car from North America, you ill be dinged with shipping, and even worst duties. I hope this helps! Cheers!

The number is like hair a social security number that's all it is cuz I lived in I was born in Portugal to social security number we could do your taxes at the end of the year

Just wanted to share that our attorney met us at the Financas and for 60 euros became our representative for a year. Easy peasy. He even speaks English, so he helped with the parts where we didn’t understand their Portuguese and they didn’t understand our English!

If we walk into the NIF office in person (US citizens), do we still need a sponsor/rep? and would the total cost be 10.20 euro. Also, can you recommend a bank to set up an account if we plan to buy property/house. TIA

If you are new in the country, have no residence etc. You will need a representative, friend, lawyer etc. You need someone that has a nif# and a residence. The cost of 10.20 euros is the just for the number, if you have a lawyer, than he will also charge you. Hopefully this makes sense. I used Santander on Pico, in the village of Lajes.

when i look up applications for NIF, I am reading that if I already have a citisenship, it was automatically assigned to me. am i confusing the wording

I was born on the island, have citizenship but still had to go in and apply for the number. I'm pretty sure this still applies. Either way check direct with the source to make sure; contact either the Gov't office or a notary! Take care!

From what people told me the most common way to get a nif number while away from the country is through a local Portuguese lawyer/notary. Not sure if you can do it directly with consulate or embassy. I hope this helps.

It has something to do with recording the transaction/taxes you are paying. This way you might want to claim the taxes. Here in Canada would be like input tax credit, especially for those that have a business. This is how I understand it! Cheers!
