Lyrics:
(do do do do do)
Come on in take a seat next to me
You know we got we got what you need
We may be liars preaching to choirs
But we can we can sell you dreams
You don't need sympathy
They got a pill for everything
Just take that dark cloud
Wring it out to wash them down
But don't pray for us
We don't need no modern Jesus to roll with us
The only rule we need is never giving up
The only faith we have is faith in us
(do do do do)
We're the ones who start little fires
Yeah they burn out
But when they're on the rise they can't help but shine
And when the wave approaches
Take our ashes to the ocean
Who cares if Hell awaits
We're having drinks at Heaven's Gate so
Don't pray for us
We don't need no modern Jesus to roll with us
The only rule we need is never giving up
The only faith we have is faith in us
We know that we're helpless
At least we always assumed
But we don't need to prove nothing to you
Let's keep it cool you don't need to feel blue
Cause we won't sell you nothing you can't use
Don't pray for us
We don't need no modern Jesus to roll with us
The only rule we need is never giving up
The only faith we have is faith in us
(do do do do do)

@Barbara Lainhart In a fundamental sense, god is a idea. We come up with what he looks like, his doctrines, and how he will treat us in the great unknown. God is a figment of our mind and only we can change how we live our lives and how we fix our own situations. Hoping god will fix all your problems because you have faith is just ludicrous. God in my view, should be a moral compass, not anything more.

I am not an active Christian but I still abide by my faith -to some extent- and pray every night. What I dislike about the Christian religion is the avid worshipers who condemn you because of the scriptures THEY deem to be relevant while virtually ignoring the other portions of the Bible that says THOU SHALT NOT JUDGE etc. Hence I stopped going to church altogether; I think my relationship with God is my business and not the business of the plethora of modern Jesuses roaming about.

Believe in yourself. Have faith in yourself, the youth of today need to believe they can achieve more than was done before them. To be better persons; kinder, wiser than those that came before. One does not necessarily require faith in a god or Messiah, but faith in oneself, and in one another.

This band is amazing. They don't conform to one sound, and every album has a different style, yet they all sound amazing. They do not sing about sex or love, like most Top 100 artists, and every song has a deep meaning everyone can relate to. I can listen to every single album and never skip a track. And then hit repeat. Basically, the most underrated band alive.

Personal responsibility is the message.That extends to living an honest, truthful, authentic, and examined life. It's when we don't, that we as humans create problems for ourselves and others. Try and be a good human. Do not oppress.

'Modern Jesus' is simply a stand in, a metaphor for relying on something or someone to save you in the modern age. It's not actually referring to the bible or anything like that, it's not a religious song

Sam Williams It says jesus, you can't say it's not referring to the bible because it obviously is. On the other hand you are also right, it could have said we don't need no modern buddah or whatever. Only faith we have is faith in us. We are the most powerful beings in this universe. If we only knew.
@Rimbey379

It's about the apostasy and falling away from God in the last days. All these comments you find here are proof of that. You wouldn't understand that though if you are ignorant, or not a real believer in the scripture.
@samwilliams9211
@samwilliams9211 8 жыл бұрын
AJollyGoodFelon That's sort of like saying 'you said the word pizza so you must have meant Italy' Christo is right when he says apostasy, but the beauty of interpretation means it doesn't have to be about one thing and one thing only. And I'm not 'ignorant' because i don't believe in the scripture. I just have another way of thinking. Which is ok.

Even as a Christian, this song is really good and that's all that matters. The message isn't bad, the lyrics are beautiful, and the the melody and voice are both spectacular.
@Requestnetwork1

If you’re a Christian and you don’t see anything wrong with the message “we don’t need Jesus, the only faith we have is faith in us”, then you should be deeply concerned about your faith. Read Matthew 7!
@davidepellegrino3999
@davidepellegrino3999 Жыл бұрын
@@Requestnetwork1 Under my point of view, this song criticizes the tendency of religious organizations of putting aside compassion between humans and only putting emphasis on blind faith and obidience to the rules, creating a sense of fear of God and his punishment instead of trust and love This has surely been a problem throughout all of history, and a couple of centuries ago it was way worse, but it's sad to see that such things remain even today (opinion of a catholic btw)
@Requestnetwork1
@Requestnetwork1 Жыл бұрын
@@davidepellegrino3999 That's a fair criticism and I find that trend especially prominent in the Catholic church, sorry if you've experienced that. But the main message of the song is to put aside faith in God and have faith in yourself which is completely unbiblical. I'd rather listen to a criticism from someone in the faith than people who are literally posting satanic content (look at the name of their albums and songs).
@davidepellegrino3999
@davidepellegrino3999 Жыл бұрын
@@Requestnetwork1 now that I searched for more information about the song, I see you're right, its view is definitely anti religious, although I wouldn't go as far as calling it "satanic" Anyway, the thing I felt necessary responding you for is just that I don't find right to tell a Christian to be concerned about his faith just because he enjoys and doesn't find a wrong message in an anti religious song
@Requestnetwork1
@Requestnetwork1 Жыл бұрын
@@davidepellegrino3999 Gotcha, the satanic thing is mainly referring to the band as a whole but that's another discussion. I'm going to disagree because there's a difference between enjoying a song and defending its bad message. It's not just about religion, it's literally saying you don't need Jesus because you should have faith in yourself. I pray God would reveal that conviction to both of you, God bless you brother!

"In an interview with NPR, the lead singer (John Gourley) explained that the message of the song as a whole was to simply say that it is better to have faith in yourself than in God. He would rather spend time trying to improve his life on Earth then spend time hoping that his life will magically be improved. This song, like many others by this band, fits the common theme of atheism or not having strict beliefs in a certain line of faith." DEBATE OVER.
