This was our first Camino and we used Portuguese Greenwalks, who did transfer our bags forward. We learned how easy this was to do ourselves and either carried or sent bags forward on our next Camino Frances.

Hi Beatriz, The Camino Portuguese is really beautiful. We went in May and really enjoyed all of the flowers. There were a couple of showers along the way, so a rain jacket or poncho is important. Also wearing shoes a half or full size larger helps avoid blisters as your feet swell with all of the walking on old Roman roads. I had a small tripod for my iPhone that I set up on the ground or a post. The Camino Portuguese was our first Camino. Last year we walked our second Camino Frances at ages 70 and 72. You have got this! Buen Camino 🥾🥾

I trust you are well, I did the same route in September this year. We stayed in Tui as a rest stop. Tui was really lovely. I so enjoyed your video as it gave me so many memories. I loved the Camino and considering doing the Camino again in 2023, this time the Portuguese coastal route. I will be 72 when I finish. Thanks again.

Thanks for the kind words. We too really enjoyed the Portuguese route especially the spring flowers. In 2019 we did the Camino France. This year we walked the France a second time with the express purpose to walk slowly. I created a bunch of video to help me remember each wonderful or challenging day. You can see all 14 videos on the Camino 2022 play list on our channel. By the way I was and am 72 during this last walk. It’s just one step at a time. kzbin.info/aero/PL1pXfg165HnvRDz2MqW9U_iC6Xv4AkXnx

My wife and I really enjoyed watching your wonderful video of your Camino in Portugal. We are similar in age and are considering walking the Camino from Porto to Santiago. After watching your amazing journey, we're planning to use Portuguese Greenwalks, the same company that you used. As this will be our first Camino, we are curious if there anything that that you would do differently? We understand that Portuguese Greenwalks offers 3 route options from Porto to Santiago: a coastal route, the traditional route, and a country inns variant to the traditional route. We also understand that the company will customize upon request. We would appreciate your thoughts on customizing the trip to combine the Coastal and traditional routes. Thanks again for your sharing your amazing travels. We have now subscribed to your channel and hope to follow in some of your footsteps.

DB you and your wife will surely enjoy this walk. The first day from Porto even being dropped off outside of the industrial area was our least favorite. Ask Portuguese Greenwalks to route you up the coastal route from Porto for the first day or two maybe joining the central route at Rates. We especially liked the casa Rurales we stayed in. We have also heard from friends that they added what is called the spiritual variant, a route that loops out from Pontevedra for a couple of days and rejoins at Padrón. It is supposed to be especially beautiful. Another thing to think about is rest days. We took 3 rest days, walking 12 for a total of 15. Three might have been excessive, but then it is the journey that counts. We especially enjoyed our rest day in Ponte Lima. As you probably saw on KZbin, last year we did the Camino Frances. This spring we are walking the Ingles, then walking to Finisterre-Muxía. We have some time after that and may go down to Pontevedra to walk that variant part of the Portugal. Obviously we like to talk about all things Camino so are happy to answer your questions.

Loved your video, I’ve been researching to see which Camino to take based on my health, I’m 62 and by seeing your video I will definitely choose this one. I will love to go on mid May in 2024. Do you think it can be good weather? No rain ? Also, who made your videos when you are walking towards the camera?

Hi, We walked the Camino Portugues as our first Camino from Porto way back in 2018. Since we weren’t sure of how this walk would go we had a bag transported and only walked with a day pack. Since then we walked the Camino Frances from St Jean twice, once in 2019 and last year May June 2022. We carried our bags most days and have really enjoyed that route. Last year I was 72 and concentrated on enjoying and videoing each day. Check out our channel for some of my best video of these two walks.

May was a great time of year to walk the Portuguese Camino. I read online that it is really hot there now. Also leaving from Porto and walking the coastal and cutting back to the central route to Rates would be my suggestion if we were to do it again.

We begin walking the Portuguese Camino on May 25 and plan to walk the coastal walk to Vila do Conde and then to Rates. Your comment confirms what we plan! Thanks. Also, Karen, I am wondering what type of shoes you wore on the Camino. When we walked the Camino Frances, I had regular boots, but it appears you are not walking in boots on this Camino. Would love to hear from you on your shoe type. Rita and George

I am planing to walk from Porto’s to Santiago then on to the end of the world this fall. Nancy and I are in our 70’s and walked frances in fall of 2018. My question is where did you book pensions, hotels etc ? We used Buen Camino app on are last trip but I do not see many listing for the Portuguese Camino in that app. Secondly it appears like us you shipped your packs. What service did you use? Would you recommend them? We have time and usually walk only 2 or 3 days without taking a day to explore ( That is our Way). Where would you recommend taking time to explore? We use ofoos running recovery for some walking on pavement and some stone paths as well as night walks. I recommend these to you. Really save your feet. Greatly enjoyed your video looking forward to your responses. Thanks in advance. Chuck

Charles Soost Hi Charles, the Camino Portuguese was our first Camino and we used a service called Portuguese Greenwalks. Last year we walked the Frances and booked everything along the way ourselves. It seems that there are many more places to stay along the Frances. Portuguese Greenwalks booked all of the hotels, pensions, and casa rurales. Each was unique and good.. They also arranged the luggage transport, but just like on the Frances, every place can make arrangements for luggage transport. We did not stay in any alburgues on the Portuguese. We only stayed in 6 or 7 on the Frances. I can send you a list of places we stayed on the Portuguese and you could book on your own. Send me an email at: bccodyssey@yahoo.com We took three rest days over the two weeks of walking, taking 15 days to Santiago. Our absolute favorite was Ponte Lima. We also stayed an extra day in Valencia/Tui and Pontevedra. I am now 70 and Karen and I planned to walk the Ingles and Finesterra this April. Obviously those plans are on hold. Maybe the fall will be okay for both of our plans and we will see you in Santiago. Did you see our Camino Frances video? kzbin.info/www/bejne/op3CqJeGrpt4r6s Take care, Wayne

Enjoyed your video. We are going to walk our first Camino Central Route from Porto starting on May 25 ending around June 8th ? We wanted to ask you if you did it again would you book your own stays? We are like you and didn't want the stress of booking and not knowing how far the Hotels are off the path. Thanks

Hi Beth, You are right, booking through Portuguese Greenwalks did take stress off of our first Camino. We did the Camino Frances last year and the Ingles this year booking all of our own places using the internet. It does take time. If spending a little more money is not a factor, Camino Ways or Portuguese Greenwalks are good options. If you want to take a look at how you might go about it yourself, start by going to Gronze.com through chrome so that it will translate into English. There are lists of places to stay and many of them have links that can make reservations through oozing.com. Hope this helps and I know you will have a wonderful time which ever way you choose. The flowers will be in full bloom in May.

@@where-in-the-world Thank you so much! We received a quote back from Green Walks and it looks really affordable. We have rest days in Ponte de Lima, Pontevedra and thinking of adding another? Can you recommend? So wow how great was that to be able to walk 500 miles on the Frances!! Congratulations!! Will have to check out Ingles. Thanks again for your replies. Beth

Beth Fitzgibbon Ponte de Lima and Pontevedra are the two best rest day places. We did a third staying in Valencia which is across the river from Tui. Tui is more picturesque and there is even a little road train that takes tourists between the two cities. If you want to take your time, a third stop in Tui would be nice, but maybe not totally necessary. Hope this helps.

The spiral book we were using was provided by a company called Portuguese Greenwalks. We booked places to stay through them. This was our first Camino and we now know it wasn’t necessary, but it made the trip less stressful at the time. You are going to really enjoy your walk. Spring / early summer is beautiful. We loved it so much we are doing the longer Camino Frances starting May 2nd and have planned 40+ days to make it to Santiago. Enjoy your trip.

Be Happeeeee The Camino Frances was 40 days of walking 500 miles! A much bigger challenge. Days and distance make it much different than the Portuguese. That has its own rewards as well as obstacles to overcome. The Portuguese is beautiful and a good place to start if you are not sure if you are up for over a month of walking.
