Pátria = homeland/native land The word "Pátria" originates from the Latin "Pater", which gave rise to the Portuguese word "Pai" (father)

Fatherland, or motherland, both in portughese. Anyway it was portughese man, the grandfathers, even before the modern nation, went to war agains iberians, romans, barbarians, vikings, arabes, maroca, argelians, spaniards, french, deutch, otomans, venitians, genovese, indians, chinese, africans, japonese, indonesian, etc, they went alone, leave rhe wife in the motherland, they were the founders of many countries, and win wars always in great disvantage, and with honor in vitory or defeat.

It is a catchy tune which, despite being a march, foes have a unique melody to it that makes it easily revognizable. The lyrics are outdated to thecpoint i often think it should be played without lyrics. The lyrics are an adaptation from the original version which began as a call of arms against, of all people, the british, during a political crisis in regard to the british impositiins in regard to the pink map. Later the words "against the britons" was changed to "against the cannons" as that rhymes in portuguese and was afopted as the republic's anthem.

Hello!! About that motherland.. Fatherland... Thing... Y believe it's just a more literal translation too English.. In Portuguese many times (O) is male "Ó Pátria" And (A) female"À Pátria " So they used that in the translation..in PT we don't really have translation too fatherland that would make sense "Terra Pai" ❌.. Only motherland "Terra Mãe"✅or Pátria for short lol 😂 PT as a lot of words..double a lot male/female..

About Fatherland i think that was an automatic translation because it was bad. "Pátria" in portuguese is feminine so it should be mother land. The problem was the articale "o" in portuguese is use for male words but is also the english interjection oh.

why it's Fatherland "of or relating to a patriarch, the male head of a family, tribe, community, church, order, etc."

The term "Pátria" is actually a feminine word. And any reference to it is always in the feminine. We refer to the "Pátria" as "she". Also, Republic is also a feminine word. So that comment about the "patriarchy" is just stupid.

Our hymne is our own, nothing to do with the french. This hymne goes back and relates to all the struggles the Portuguese had when defending their country against all odds and when establishing an imperium throughtout all the world. Its insulting to relate this to the french.
