for a while, i've had the same problem as adam with fitting full figures in my sketchbooks (i typically use an A5). the solution i found that works best is drawing the torso out first, and then fitting the limbs and head. the other benefit i've found to this is that you very rarely end up with a massive melon-headed character!

Erin Doodles Use other people's art work as motivation for yourself as opposed to a level of expectation. Comparison kills the desire to improve or continue drawing, I would try to not do that as much as possible.
