I really appreciate you getting straight into it. You explained all this really clearly, thank you. Do you think you could do a similar video to show which style couch goes with various interior designs, such as Scandi, Japandi, minimalism, etc?

They’re sooooo comfortable though 🤤 In the world of Netflix binge watching, there’s simply no other option (but yes, most of them look like 4 lazy boy chairs melted together 😂)

I like them better than I like tripping over an ottoman. The more practical something is the more likely the snobbish attitudes will pop up.

Thank you for your concise, informative style videos. No waiting for the BLah Blah, to finish! Phew. I have lived in Canada and the UK, (Scotland and England). I just thought all those names were interchangeable! I would hear the word “Chesterfield” quite a bit in Canada. At home growing up in the south east of England we often used Settee and Sofa interchangeably. Seemed to distinguish this item from the arm chair. Thanks for making all these distinctions for us. Also helpful as we are now shopping for a new “Sofa”, helpful to know this might be considered the umbrella term!

06:38 Madame de récamier's recamier is actually kept in chateaubriand's house in La Vallée au Loup, south of Paris & it even still has its old upholstery ! I know because I was there last week :p though the painting is indeed in the Louvre

I know its weird, but personally I hate the look of basically all couches. I love the comfort, but I have never bought one, because I can't stand the thought of having something so bulky in my house. Just thinking about it makes me anxious. I watched this video in hopes that I could learn something new, and I did! I think that I'll only consider modular options from now on, since they can be spread apart and configured in different ways. Also, I think chaise lounges are my friends. Of all the example photos in the video, 5:45 appealed to me the most. I love the openness, and how the legs keep it from looking bulky or from cutting off the flow of the space. Much to think about. ☺

I think mid-century modern is the most comfortable for "petite" people. My feet rarely touch the ground on most furniture, very uncomfortable. Can you recommend a "decorating style" quiz, or perhaps provide one? Thanks!

So interesting. I just found you today and really appreciate the way you present material. I have no eye for decorating and keep thinking someone, somewhere, book, class, etc will explain the trick, haha. You are actually coming the closest. Also, one of my grandmothers was California born and bred and every sofa was a chesterfield, haha.

This was a cool rundown. I have been looking for sofas that are super comfy and you can nap on if needed. I like recliners but man they really can be god awful to look at. Lol. I have a small space so thinking a loveseat but need comfort and higher off the ground due to arthritis. It’s a tall order to figure out.

This was great! Can you do a video on sofas that are low to the ground? Like western versions of Middle Eastern floor seating and I believe there's a Japanese style of floor seating as well! I love the comfortable floor seats that go all the way around a room but I keep looking for inspiration on how to modernize and minimize is for my everyday American life!

The one advantage to a reclining sofa is, if you’re short, or have short legs, they can be more comfortable than non-reclining sofas. I agree with you on style (or lack of), though.

The manufacturers of recliners have streamlined some of them so that they are smaller, no overstuffing, tailored. So why can’t they/haven’t they done the same to recliner sofas? I’ve enjoyed one of those smaller recliners for more than 20 years, but have never seen a reclining sofa that doesn’t look like the Michelin Man. I’m no artist or designer, but I can easily visualize my own chair stretched out. If anyone knows of these, I’d love to hear about them. 😃
@vaderladyl7 ай бұрын
They do have some styles that are more streamlined and slimmer but it is especially difficult to make them like that because of the inside components that make them comfortable and practical.

My preference in sofas have always been a 'structured' low profile sofa, clean cut and always on legs, opposed to down to the ground (I suppose a mid-century type model). I have previously owned 3 leather sofas (the last one being great for my late dog has an energetic and mischievous puppy!) but I would never buy one now. I tend to find those large, puffy (what I call 'teddy bear' sofas quite oversized and ugly. The last 3 fabric sofas I have had, have all been made by the same UK company, the same model, but different colours and the internal hardwood frame has never let me down. The company also let you customise their sofas both size and even removing or adding different elements to them at a low additional cost.

We added a Tuxedo in the place of a recommended Davenport per a 1941 Good Housekeeping book to fit our 1939 home because of the similar slimming effect you highlighted, vs the Chesterfield ... In the ‘90s, I bought what is essentially an English roll arm sofa from a mom-and-pop furniture store where I was able to choose the upholstery. It differs from a traditional English roll arm in that it has tall, thick rolled arms that flare out somewhat. It has a single bench seat cushion and a tight back with a big dip in the center, which was popular at the time. It’s sort of a camelback in reverse. It is big, chunky, and comfortable and I bought a matching chair and ottoman to go with it. I got all three pieces for $500.00. It has held up beautifully. I’ve only had it reupholstered once (in a different color velvet) and switched out the original modern-style wooden legs with more traditional ones. It sort of screams “1990s” but in a good way. ❤
