I think the orientation part which you told can be discussed further and it may not be same everywhere. Consider a case of industrial building with a long hall having a dimension of 40m x 10m which may be multistoried. In that case it is beneficial to orient the columns along the width of the building i.e minor axis because it provides better lateral resistance in case the earth shakes along minor axis. It is due to the fact that flexural resistance which is the function of moment of inertia increases with the depth by 3 folds. Pls correct me if i am wrong.
