Why do positions pitchers pitch so slow? We see them throw so well otherwise.

They tend to be uncomfortable on the mound because it’s literally higher up. They’re not used to the height difference. Most of them get going pretty well if they have a bunch of time to warm up and get used to it, but it’s usually a blowout already so it’s not good manners to take forever getting ready

Also wouldn’t want them to injure themselves with their throwing arms. That’s the whole reason for position pitchers anyways.

Because it's so specialized. Over the decades pitchers have decided to focus entirely on pitching, not defense or offense. So when a non-pitcher pitches it's a big deal
