Great job! So much easier than the charts online. I played for years but had to stop playing for several years while going to college, grad school, jobs, career, family issues, Covid and all. You are helping me to refresh the positions so I can get back to playing not just for my enjoyment but for others as well! Happy Blessed New Year!

no, but they do continue on up: Example on A string: B 1st finger C 2nd finger D 3rd finger or 1st finger in 3rd position E 4th finger or 2nd finger in 3rd position F 3rd finger in 3rd position G 4th finger in 3rd position Hope that makes sense

Alison, Hello from across the pond. I just started learning the violin and because of your videos, have decided to learn to read music also. Im picking it up slowly but surely and just wanted to say thank you very much for what your doing. Your videos are helping alot of people to create beautiful music, and you are unselfishly handing it out to anyone that desires it. I just had to say so. Your a beautiful human Alison. Thank you so very much for everything you do. Kelly

Hi, if you dont want to put stickers on, then you could try matching your notes up to the piano if you have access to one? or when you place your 1st finger on the G string it will give you the note of A which you can match up to the open A string. So, find where you think the 1st finger should go, then before you move it, play the open string it relates to and see how far out you are (if at all). You will be able to do this for the G string and D string only, but it should give you an idea....

@max300ify You may well be, but as i havent seen you I couldnt say either way. You should only need to apply rosin 2weeks unless you feel that you are practising/playing for a good few hours every day, 7 days a week for example. Start by putting a little rosin at the very ends of the bow then just a few up and down swipes of the whole length and you are probably done. If there is too much, you will get a massive amount of fallout on the strings and you wont need more for a long time. HTH :)

well, im not sure it really works in terms of semitones, as I hadnt really thought of it like that before as we work in positions and everything roots from 1st position....so 2nd pos would be one note higher in the finger positions as so on and so on. There is no 2 1/2 position so thinking in semitones does not always work plus, if you have a C# then you are moving a tone from B (1st finger on A string).it get confusing so we prefer to think in positions...does that help or have i confused more?

Hi, This morning I received the Book "Position Changing For The Violin" (Neil Mackay). from Amazon U.K. Already I was doing my homework. Thank you very much for your kind recommendation. One more thing : Your advice on Bow Tightening has now brought me one step ahead ! I now realize that the wrong Bow Tightening could so easily leave a Learner struggling with his violin, especially the G String as in my case. Thanks so much again. Nice weekend to you.

I have a question:, I'm starting playing the viola, but I have experience as a guitar player. I only know a few things about Viola, and I would like to know how the upper register notes are played. Do you have to press all the way against the fingerboard?, or you have to slightly press on the string?, I'm really curious about this, because there's a lot of space between the wood and the string when you are getting closer to the bridge

It doesnt work lik that im afraid - I wish it did though! You know how each time you put down a finger it gives you the next note up...well its the same if you worked up the fingerboard so - A string example - 1st finger=B, 2nd finger=C, 3rd finger=D then moving up to 3rd position where the 3rd finger is now replaced by the 1st finger which would be D as well, the 2nd finger would be E otherwise known as 4th finger and 3rd finger is F and 4th finger is G. Does that make sense? Hard to explain!

if you have musical background and have relative pitch I woudn't bother tbh. this will force you to use your ear :) which will allow you to keep you eye on your bow hairs on the strings for accuracy kiling 2 birds with 1 stone :) although I'm a newbie too so not speaking from experience.

Alison, I hope that this isn't a stupid question. I am 58 and getting back into the violin. I know that I won't be playing in an orchestra. This is for my enjoyment and hopefully others.I love some classical but, my true love is Irish and Celtic music,(I'm a Scot on my fathers side). My question is, will I need to be concerned going any farther than perhaps forth position?

Hi there! A few years back, I stopped playing the Violin, and this upcoming Christmas - I'll be rehashing my old violin skills. Your video helped tremendously, and perhaps this question is a bit broad, but when reading sheet music - how do you know what position to be in? And what do the notes become as you get into the higher positions? i.e. if you went into 2nd position on the G string, it would go from A, B, C, D to ???? Thank you!
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 8 жыл бұрын
+Toby Green The music usually tells you what position to be in. If you have notes too high on the E string to play then you need to go into position anyway. You can also use positions to make it easier and more convenient to play certain passages and thats just trial and error. There is always more than one way to to play the notes with fingering.
@philliprumlin-bond5648
@philliprumlin-bond5648 7 жыл бұрын
Usually the music tells you, but if it doesn't, make sure to look at the number above the note, and the note itself. If it doesn't line up, its another position. Hope this helps!

See there! I realized half tone steps would become narrower and narrower the higher I went. Here the fact that I play a 3/4 violin gets a little awkward. Luckily I'm not planing on changing positions, accept later for the E string. But I don't think I will go higher than D. You're the only one who starts explaining what the positions are, while everybody else starts explaining how to slide to the 3rd position. Changing preventively to E string 2nd position seems appropriate if the key is like Cmajor, Fmajor or Aminor, so I can reach the C. I can still do another slide in case I feel like going higher still. I don't like longer slides unless I really want such a slide effect, which should be a rather rare thing. Yes, I find bowing and fingering harder on higher positions. I found that out a week ago and now play up there to make my 4th finger stronger for the 1st position. After playing in the 5th position on the D string, the G in the 1st position has more power and sounds better.

This is just an opinion that you should out tape on the finger so like some beginners want to learn ahead in school will understand better( me in the pass) it was kinda hard for me to learn without tape thought. There's nothing else and your teaching is awsome!

Cn u mk a vid of left hand holding, thumb position? I noticed Perlman almost grips the neck, his thumb knuckle is sticking above the neck (like the indian grip) this must help in steading the violin; and can help getting rid of neck problems shoulderests. Only prbm is that if i grip like that i cant slide the hand for changing positions coz hand remains sticky/sweaty. Cant grip for vibrato also. So how do they do it? plz teach how diff people cope up with these pbms. How do they slide hand easily without shoulder rest?
