i'm a young adult he feels so hurt the stand-out qualities receive in my parenting are the top 10 Don'ts you listed.......thanks Mr Dozier for posting this information....i'll be the best parent when it's my time...so teaching myself now. One love, Jamaica!

On the topic though, I feel like what he is saying is basically to treat teens with the same respect (ie. express genuine feelings; respect their sovereignty and decision-making for themselves) you would give another adult - and it makes sense; you are teaching how they should behave towards themselves and others, by how you treat them. If you exert control over them, you are enforcing that dynamic of control-dependence in them which they will carry on to adulthood.

You make some points. However, what ever happen to teaching your young adult how to be honest instead of sugar coating everything. In the end they will learn to respect themself and you as the parent.
