I thought the acting was extremely questionable.. and the dialogue. Myself and my partner actually laughed out loud in the cinema at several times in the movie when I don't think it was supposed to be funny? That being said.. I actually really enjoyed it. It gives me early 00s vibes, a bit cheesy and predictable but a good time! A great story and beautiful setting. Very easy to watch. But - the visual of the woman with calcium deficiency?.. LOL

I'm also the child of a schizophrenic. He was abusive in every way a person can be abusive. Not saying it's automatically due to the mental illness. This thread about whether or not mentally ill people are dangerous is a joke. We could argue about it till the apocalypse. I'll just say that I seriously question the entire mental health industry in how they deem someone "mentally ill". They literally say sometimes that mass shooters are not necessarily psychotic. THAT MAKES NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. Mental illness should not be judged in such a black and white fashion, such as someone is mentally ill or they are not. Human psychology is on a sliding scale, so 99% of us are in a grey area........

How people often think of a mentally ill person versus what mental illnesses are actually like for the people that have them ( & their families) and how they are often portrayed in television and film are all very different things. Further education and more conversation is what we need to better understand mental illness, it’s effects and how people live their daily lives while struggling with it.

@@MrSwinefuzz It’s just a fact that vast majority if mass shooters aren't suffering from psychosis. They know exactly what they are doing and they know exactly why. They're angry and want to hurt people; often they want fame. They may have some mental illness like depression, they typically have issues with anger, lack of empathy, being arrogant etc, but very few have an illness like schizophrenia. An example of a shooter with psychosis is James Holmes, and example of shooters without it are the Columbine killers. They knew they were killing real people, they planned for months, and their motives were not based on any psychotic delusion, they knew what was really happening and right from wrong. A lot of abusive people are like that, they are clear headed, they don't hallucinate or anything like that, they just for various reasons want to hurt someone. Abusers are diverse, they don't all have the same type of mind. Having an experience with one type of abuser doesn't mean they all are the same as your abuser. That said, I am also a survivor and I am sorry you went through that. I am also mentally ill myself and it certainly hasn't made me violent or racist lol.

But his falling into the scapegoating routine is a signifier that more is wrong with him than just the scapegoating, and it’s that “more”that aggravates me. Thank you for talking about depictions of mental illnesses. We are more likely to be victims of assault than perpetrateurs, yet lack of education and demonisation of certain disorders in the media spreads even more misinformation. And there is a serious problem with police restraint/brutality when it comes to how police interact with mentally ill people who are very distressed/vulnerable, as our culture has taught us mentally ill people are dangerous and are threats/violent to society.

I remember last year when I went to a mental health hospital, I was waiting for the results outside and the guard came in thru the locked door that he had access to and he talked to us/answered us in a way that showed he was afraid of us, it’s obvious enough for me to notice it. Oh, forgot to add, it’s not just people outside professional care, it’s the doctors (some anyway) , the doctor that treated me said ‘ you’re too paranoid and suspicious’ and each time I went there to refill my medication, he was dismissive and impatient,sure I’m just a number to them, sure he may be just getting thru the day, but maybe don’t be a psychiatrist if that’s how you treat a patient suffering , this is rampant btw, those ‘renowned’ doctors get off their ‘good’ reputation and can be real condescending. He also told me to hide my illness from people , yeah, a psychiatrist stigmatising mental illness, hooray I guess. 😐

My husband has schizophrenia spectrum disorder, which makes him hallucinate without distressing him, and he is also diagnosed with ADHD and PTSD. He has issues with rage, but it’s because his ex wife pushed him and mentally abused him into using his anger to target his kids and make them hate him. He’s been with me for 7 years and he is absolutely loving, kind, thoughtful, sometimes a little mean, but he reflects and apologizes when he knows he said something hurtful. I’m glad you care enough about mental illness to call a big name out on it.

My biggest complaint with M. NightShyamalan's movies are that everything has to have a huge twist. Some of the best suspense movies, (Silence of the Lambs & Cape Fear, etc.) rely much more on people in danger & threats than some extraordinary set of circumstances. His films are too gimmicky, imo.

And that's not deny that mental illness can cause real and terrifying violence on occasion. Burned into my memory is the murder of Tim McClean, when Vince Li beheaded and cannibalized him on a Greyhound bus while he was off his meds. It does happen. But you're thinking about all the mentally ill violent people you've seen in media. Because they're *always* portrayed as mentally ill. When in reality they're usually just pathetic angry people. All those shooters and rapists you hear about on the news, they're not generally mentally ill. The point is that the amount of mentally ill people that are violent in this way is infinitessimally small. We really need to stop stigmatizing mental illness, and start pointing out the neurotypical people who do these things at a far more alarming rate, and analyse the reasons why, and stop minimizing the issue and saying "Oh they must be a schitzo!" That's really not how it works. And you too would be misguided, if you think I'm going to engage in a conversation in the comments of a youtube video, any further than this. 😂

Full agree with your rant. The biggest issue for me is that a lot of the time, Shyamalan is vilifying mental health conditions that are already so stigmatized, and that many people know very little about (ex. schizophrenia, DID) outside of media portrayals. Most people will know someone with depression or anxiety in their lives, but far fewer will have friends or family members with DID, so movies like Split become the only experience they have with these conditions. When people with DID are almost exclusively portrayed to be violent with "evil" alters or to behave in ways that don't live up with real lived experiences, even well-meaning viewers start to internalize this idea, since there are few to no positive representations in popular media to counteract them. Same with psychosis, sociopathy, etc. These stigmas have an impact on real peoples' lives, which makes it even more important to call out these harmful portrayals when they seem to be Shyamalan's calling cards time and time again.

I just got back from finally seeing Old! The whole time I thought the "schizophrenic" character had dementia. The way it got worse with age, his confusion, his outbursts - it was like M. Night. Shyamalan read about dementia, forgot what the illness was called, and decided to just call it schizophrenia. Thank you so much for your rant as well. It's the exact same rant I have almost every time mental illness is portrayed in movies because it's so rarely portrayed well. I studied about mental illness in film like 10 years ago and the erroneous stereotypes surrounding things like schizophrenia and I hate that after all this time, we are stilling seeing the stereotype now. I hope the more people talk about it and point out how toxic it is, the less we will see it in media.

On the topic of mental illness in Shyamalan films, I think it's also worth mentioning the opening scene of the Sixth Sense. The mentally ill child who grew up to be an equally ill and troubled adult shot Malcolm and them himself.

I hadn’t thought about the violence/mental illness in his movies the way you talked about it but if you think about it, he’s been doing it from the beginning with the former client character in the sixth sense. He’s clearly suffering from mental health problems before his scene with Malcolm in the bedroom in the beginning. Very thought provoking, good video!

Before I watch this, I want to say, straight up, that character was exhibiting symptoms way closer to dementia than schizophrenia. He was paranoid, but he actually did something that he could be caught for? Like, he murdered a guy breaking into his house... which you might be reasonable to be paranoid for if you didn’t face any chargers. He wasn’t just thinking people were spying on him or talking about him. Also, he had memory problems and would talk about weird random movies. He didn’t seem to be hallucinating, or talking to himself.... he didn’t seem to react to triggers the audience couldn’t see.... Maybe I’m wrong, but he didn’t seem to have many symptoms of schizophrenia. Also, the dementia thing makes sense because he was getting older. I thought they were gonna be clever with that. ... but alas.

@@brynnsievert6371 sometimes people with dementia get angry and loud over things that seem small because they have a hard time knowing what is going on, so even that part made sense to me with dementia. People with schizophrenia of course can get angry, but it is usually based on paranoia without a probable cause (visual, auditory hallucinations, intense paranoia). His cause was probable, and it would make sense if he is confusing people for people against him legally with dementia/Alzheimer’s because they tend to live in past memories.

I agree with the stigma around mental health issues wholeheartedly. My son has them. I’m not sure if it’s just the fact some screenwriters think a person without mental health issues would be violent or commit acts of violence or it’s just laziness in the writing process. Do they think that a “normal “ person wouldn’t be violent? Is it more plausible for the audience to assume a person with mental health issues has no sense of right or wrong? I’m not sure but I absolutely see your point. Some sensitivity for people with these conditions would be appreciated. And Sarah this is your channel, say what you want to ! That was one of the first things I noticed that the man with Schizophrenia was portrayed very incorrectly and it was pissing me off. Then I found out that in the graphic novel the actual mental illness was Dementia or Alzheimer's which personally is what I thought they were going to go with in the film but when M. Night made the change I thought it was very unnecessary. Thank you for talking about it.

I really liked this movie, but having the doctor have schizophrenia was disappointing. It seemed like it was being set up that he had early onset dementia which would have made so much sense for the story, and explained his behavior very well. I agree that making him have schizophrenia was just very clearly demonizing mental Illness. Also I have not read the source material but I believe there was a character with dementia so why change it when it already makes sense?

I'm really glad you liked the movie -- I haven't seen it yet and was feeling kind of iffy because of the negative reviews, but you and I tend to have the same tastes so I'm excited again haha😁 But I have to say something about your rant. I haven't seen a lot of M Night movies and my feelings toward Split are a bit different than yours, but it's kind of strange to me that you put so much emphasis on ableism regarding mental health -- as you should! -- but not so much on how physical disabilities are portrayed in horror. I've just rewatched your Midsommar and Pet Sematary (2019) videos to make sure, and you didn't even mention the tired "disability = purity" trope in Midsommar or how Zelda as a character only existed to terrify Rachel -- her disability being the thing that was terrifying. I get that mental health is a topic that would stick out to you since that's what you studied, but please remember that ableism exists in my forms -- especially (and unfortunately) in horror! Great review. Looking forward to seeing the movie☺️

First of all, that pr package is awesome!!! I loved the movie, and may see it again myself. I am also a huge M. Night Shyamalan fan. I think the movie is very thought provoking especially in this day and age. I understand her rant too. I worked in the health care industry for a long time and mostly worked with mentally disabled people. Every mental illness is so extremely different, but very scary. I get her criticism for, lack of a better word some stereotyping going on but I feel it's an exploration into some scary and often misunderstood real fear of mental illness.

I have had severe NPD and anxiety all my life, and I just wanted to add to this discussion if it's welcome. I know especially that I act like a prick 90% of the time, but the least I try to do is apologize later. I personally can see and find it realistic that a person with narcissistic personality disorder could be a villain in movies, and I don't find it very offensive when that disorder is portrayed in bad light, because it is a very bad and twisted reality to live in. But I also don't like when only the bad of people like me are shown, because it's not fair to me or anyone else that we are ALWAYS portrayed as assholes. Now schizophrenia and mental illnesses like that get me upset, because I believe that those people, like my cousin, aren't malicious most of the time. Sure they can occasionally lash out, but I feel like most people with that ailment are also very kind people, who struggle severely with so much, and portraying them as assholes so often in movies makes me sick. The long story short: I think that it is fine for a mentally ill person to be portrayed as the antagonist in movies, but when the writer doesn't do his research, it shows as an excuse just to make the villain unusually evil, which isn't okay and the topic should be explored more from all sides, instead of just using the excuse "oh he's got a mental problem" to explain away all of a character's actions.

I have bpd but i've had friends with npd. One of them is a lovely person who apologizes for everything, the other is a neurotic shoe collector and coke addict who i got along with but was an abuser to his ex. It's usually a toss-up for me if a characters written to have cluster b pds are super engaging, intelligent, deliciously morally ambiguous characters .... Or if they're just caricatures of what the writer seems to think people with pds are like. And the thing that caps it off for me is that they're never unquestionably /good/. I think people with NPD and ASPD and BPD, HPD, AvPD, etc. deserve characters who are unquestionably good not only as representation, but as a positive example. But i feel i'm never going to get good PD rep in a horror movie, especially not a m night one. That's why I avoid avoid avoid. It's not just that people with MY mental illnesses who deserve to be positively represented, it's that ALL people with any mental illnesses deserve to be positively represented. That's my rant.

I so agree on the mental health aspect. Hollywood in general does a terrible job showing people become evil *b/c* of mental illness instead of even trying to do the bare minimum of being like this is an evil person who is also mentally ill. I think even that is a very sketchy line, but how many movies have we seen where we get a clean wrap up like "oh wow Cassandra had Bipolar disorder and stopped taking her prescriptions! That's why she took out 7 people and was stalking me!" I could see Alzheimer's being more likely for an old person becoming violent, but even that stigma just seems unkind when most of these folks need supportive care and to be taken away from dangerous objects. My neighborhood actually did have an Alzheimer's murder where a man chopped his wife up with an axe after shooting her and dragged her corpse around the house with a confused police perimeter unsure of what to do for like several hours. But that is SUCH an extreme example. And that portrayal in a horror movie would not lend well to people who are genuinely confused and experiencing rage issues, but who need help, medication, and maybe even assisted living.

Because the acting is terrible, and some of the plot points are ridiculous. Mark Wahlberg saying "come guys take an interest in science" "that's a completely superfluous bottle of cough syrup" and for two the group outrunning wind? That's not how wind works at all lol and the whole zoo scene at the diner is just straight funny to watch. I enjoy it as a so bad it's funny movie.

To be completely honest I thought the doctor in this movie had early dementia or Alzheimer’s. I thought it was kind of his mind on a downward spiral type of thing. Which was terrifying to me probably because I have a grandparent currently with it. But I also found The Visit very disturbing so there’s that 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@brynnsievert6371 Dementia gets SOO much preferential treatment compared to non-elderly chronic conditions involving psychosis, just another example of old people getting special treatment and young people screwed over. When was the last time you even HEARD of someone with dementia being put on trial for exposing themselves or hitting someone while in care, whereas schizophrenics - until they become elderly and thus join the untouchable privilged God tier of society - not only get put on trial for EXACTLY the same things that dementia patients get away with every single day, but they rarely get advised to even BOTHER pleading insanity because there's no point. Disgusting.

@@brynnsievert6371 I wonder if the reason for the change was Shyamalan not wanting to seem repetitive after having already used dementia as the explanation for frightening behaviour in The Visit, because most people in the audience wouldn't have known that it wasn't his idea to use dementia this time. I bet he thinks as long as one had a learning disability (The Village), one had DID or is supposed to make the audience think of DID (Split), one had dementia (The Visit), and one was seeing a therapist for childhood trauma (The Sixth Sense), and now one has schizophrenia instead of dementia again, then his movies aren't predictable. It's still lazy that when he does write plots, he has a history of using conditions that will make audiences more accepting of motives and plans and decisions that don't make sense, instead of using psychopathy (simple lack of conscience), which is realistically involved in most real acts of extreme unprovoked murderous violence but is harder to write for because audiences expect psychopaths to be competent and self-preserving.

I thought it was some weird thing called sundowning that was made up, though I haven't seen a commentary on it in a long while. Either way, his use of mental illness to explain the behavior of murderers is ridiculous. The scariest motive tends to be when there is no motive, not because someone needs therapy.

I loved the Village. One I have to watch every October 👏🏻🧡 Let me say that, I hear you in regards to mental illness. However, I do feel that Schizophrenia is a different beast. I listen to a true crime podcast called Obscura and he covered a case where a woman has S. And she murdered her newborn of three weeks because the voices in her head told her to do so. She tore her child apart and ingested parts of its body and other horrific things I won’t mention here. I think it goes both ways. People with mental illness, some are violent and there are some that aren’t. I think it’s a mistake to have that characteristic in a character in every movie, or most. But I don’t think people should be limited in their creativity if they want to use that avenue in their creative works. No attack at all here. Just bringing up some ideas. I really enjoy your videos and opinions 🥰

The 🐚 is relevant to the movie. The little boy who lives at the resort said he collects them. I thought at first he had dementia, but i saw some behind the scenes and m. Night said that his dad has dementia and he put the jack nicholson line in because his dad keeps talking about him.

I understand people's dislikes and issues with his movies, but I will always love them! A little lot late, but I wanted to say I agree about not ever really being impacted by a mental illness horror plot. Though I do believe, occasionally it can be effective with the right movie/story because sometimes, unfortunately that is reality for some, there is a big difference between being more realistic once or twice and a noticeable trend of negative portrayal.
