HI Sarah. I'm an old lady of 67. I love horror movies and one of my faves is Hostel. Eli Roth and Rob Zombie are two of my favorite directors. Thank you for the video on Hostel. For me, gore doesn’t make something disturbing. In fact, the more gore seen on screen you just kind of get desensitised to the blood and guts (which you know isn't real). What makes Hostel so disturbing is the realism, and that it weirdly places you in a similar position to the Elite Hunters - paying money to see people get tortured. It makes you uncomfortable, and plots like the girl with the eye really stick with you long after the credits have rolled. That's what makes it disturbing, the way it affects you psychologically.
@jessiesmyth1949

@@sunandcloud-y2u I would say personally it's still the psychological aspect that makes it disturbing to me rather than the visual gore

I think the original and Part two is Perfect. The disturbing doesn't come from the gore alone, but the motivations for the wealthy club members. The sexual exploitation in the first is a parallel to how the members of the cult are treating human flesh. In that respect, the guys are getting what is coming to them. They are literally going to a tourist destination to use women for their flesh. Part 2 far exceeds the first one for me. The viewer cares about the girls, their plight doesn't seem warranted. Who didn't love Lorna. Part 3 was garbage.

I think you just accidentally proved the franchise’s point. In both the first and second films, a group of people go on a trip to Europe for their own pleasure. It’s the same plot, the genders are just swapped. I feel like people who claim the first film comments on the objectification of women wilfully ignore the part where the women luring these guys to their demise are 100% in on it.

The first movie has a scene where a guy says if you drug up the women you can do whatever you want to them. It's really gross tbh and has Eli Roth written all over it. Then there's his dropping the F slur all the time. It's his homophobic and sexist personality all over it. Have you ever seen this lil' monologue in Death Proof? That lil' rant is Roth all over. He's awful.

One thing that I really found intriguing is how that was really the era of Americans being really patriotic and pro-USA and how that resulted in kinda dismissing other people and treating other countries as second rate, especially post soviet countries. The way the guys in the first movie treat the European people in the countries they are tourists as people who don't really deserve respect or humanity and they are just disgusting to all the people there. Especially the treatment of woman reminded me of mail-order bride attitude. They thought that they could kinda do anything to these women because they were from poorer countries.

So I was probably 10 when Hostel came out, I watched it with my dad, to this day we'll randomly quote Horror Movies to eachother, Hostel is one of them. I have to admit though I actually can't watch the eye scene up until her death, it actually horrified me, even today where I love Horror films, I still can't watch it. Hostel 2 is definitely my Favourite of the trillogy. Beth's a great final girl (I also like the actress Lauren German who went on to star in the show "Lucifer") I've seen a couple hundred Horror films, Hotel 2 would be in my Top 50. Hostel 3, for what it is, I'm fine with, it's definitely not a good film. But it was a unique take compared to the first two. If Hostel 3 was a stand alone film I probably wouldn't hate it, but as it's a "Hostel" film it's pretty bad.

The disturbing parts to me are the idea of being held against your will and tortured. I think at the time these movies were released kidnappings and murders overseas were headline news. The objectification of women in Hostel at least served a thematic purpose. The whole point is that what the rich people do in paying to do whatever they want to the trafficked people is not that different from, or at least a natural progression of, the American tourists paying to do whatever they want to the sex workers. I don't love gratuitous nudity/sex when it feels like there's no purpose, but in the case of Hostel there is at least the basic thematic message.

Hostel 2 all the way. Beth is King, Queen and the whole damn court. I love her. She is such a badass final girl. The negotiation scene lives happily rent free in my head. For me this movie it's disturbing for the concept and the things that not showed in the screen, also for the excelent suspense and tension. The sense of distiurbing in that movie it's subject, for my this film it's more disturbing that Salo, Martyrs or the human centipede, but no more that Kids by Larry Clark or Herry portrai a serial killer (films that not have gore but the history and the atmosfer it's the disturbing and raw). PD: That movie iceberg it's pure trash, because the almost all the movies in the deep of iceberg not are cinema, it's or bizarre pornography or snuff videos. My ranking: 1.- Hostel 1 2.- Hostel 2 3.- Hostel 3

I think the complaint of 'objectification of women' is somewhat dishonest, because objectifying other people is essentially what is acting about. I'm always surprised when people have an issue with exploiting sexuality on screen while not having an issue with exploiting violence. Let's be honest: lots of people love sex and lots of people love violence, that's why these movies are thriving. For that matter: I have more of an issue with how the first movie threw Slowakia under the bus for their story (and to a lesser degree the Netherlands, Amsterdam in particular).

I like to think of them as the kind of people the 2 Americans in the first movie would have become had they not been kidnapped. They’re used to using people at this point and as they became richer, they had to up the ante on doing something they could get away with.

I think as a teen male watching Hostel, I thought “Oh wow these guys are just being dudes and whoa they’re dying.” Only saw it the once til I took a film class where we watched it and broke down some themes, like how the torture rooms resemble the sex workers’ rooms when the guys are at the brothel, except the colors are browned out and grimey at the abandoned building. I don’t think it’s an intelligent film really, it is kind of just babies-first-exploitation, but I guess there’s more substance than I realized. The second film, I really just found to be an enjoyable horror with good writing and solid characters. The Elizabeth Bathory scene with the bathing in blood I found to be actually disturbing and a great opening kill. Uhhhh I didn’t even know there was a Hostel III but I’ll take you word for it and not even bother lol.

I think what you’re not acknowledging is the time period these movies came out in. These movies were part of the post 9/11 period of horror movies. There was an increase of the fear of foreign people and places and an irrational feeling that Americans were under threat at all times. Maybe you’re too young to remember but these films fueled a sentiment of “America First, America Only”. There are plenty of essays out there about post 9/11 horror you should read.

Hostel 2 was my favorite of the bunch too but it's difficult to rewatch. The first Hostel had one dimensional characters that are mostly not likable, so while it's still horrifying, it's a lot a lot easier to keep at a distance. And I think I didn’t watch 3 because usually (not always) by usually further down a franchise goes, the more objectification of women happens and the villains become cheesier. Almost for pure audience appeal, than a first film. And sadly directors back then thought horror audiences were predominantly male which was not the case. Hence the progress made. Especially in film like High Tension ringing in a new light of horror and women.

When you said Hostel was above the surface of the water my immediate thought was that "Surface of the Water" was like an indie horror movie

I think I never got into Hostel due to the sexual nature of a lot of the torture. Just personal aversion though. Saw didn't have that aspect to it (at least the first 3, I never spent time on any after that).

GREAT Franchise that ran it's course Yes they were "SHOCKING" when first out I think this was Eli Roth's Magus Opus them we got The Green Inferno Maybe he will make a comeback somewhat like M. Night but I doubt it

Hey, I don't think you have explored cosmic horror genre (a sub genre of horror/sci-fi/psychological/alien/etc). I wonder if you would like it. Not really the shocking factors you are used to but more on the side of dread, existential crisis and fear of the unknown. I would recommend the void, the endless(2017), annihilation, under the skin, color out of space, empty man, pandorum, etc..

Hostel 3 will always be my favourite because it’s the most interesting. I hate the objectification of woman as a whole in the franchise but the whole audience/people betting/weird different people coming in and torturing the victims/interesting and different ways of death make this movie my absolute fave in the franchise. It’s actually (believe it or not) one of my top horror movies of all time 😭 I see your reasons for disliking it but I will always love it and the whole ‘it feeling different to the other two’ makes it better for me 🤷🏼‍♀️

The 1st one is great. Didn't care about the 2nd film. I hated the opening. The 3rd one at least has a funny cab driver. I'm still searching for the song he was listening to.

I agree Hostel 2 had better plot but I couldn’t enjoy it because the characters were likeable, gives me anxiety for a long time. I actually don’t really like any of the movies, didn’t watch the third because I didn’t like the first 2.

I just realized this: Why is Pink flamingos under the iceberg? It isn't disturbing at all. Can someone explain why that movie is disturbing?
@Downhuman74
@Downhuman74 Жыл бұрын
It's all about context. The amount of gore isn't always an indicator of how disturbing a movie is. In fact, the gore is merely incidental most times. Take Martyrs for example (the original, of course). Martyrs probably doesn't have anything that you haven't seen in a Hellraiser movie. But the context behind what's happening - and the way it's approached - is infinitely more disturbing. Both movies deal in themes of suffering and how that suffering informs the human experience. But the approaches couldn't be more different. Hellraiser has a element of dark humor to it and borders on something darkly whimsical at times. But Martyrs really gets down into it -- digging into the darkest recesses of that suffering. The effect is, quite simply, profoundly disturbing. And profound in its conclusions as well.

Eli Roth is liiiiiiiiiife ❤ I love his movies so much. He didnt direct Hostel 3 and it showed... The 2nd one was overall better. I loved the main protagonist (such a badass) and the 180 the 2 men did with heir feelings on killing someone. Knock knock tool several attempts to get through, it just made me so mad.

I like the hostel movies myself but, admittedly, they aren't my favorite. They are definitely disturbing, sure. I mean, even just the concept of traveling somewhere and then kidnapped, tortured, and killed... Definitely realistic cause it legit could happen. So yeah, the concept is rooted in reality. I still prefer the Green Inferno over the hostel franchise. Out of the 3 films though, i really like the second movie the best.

I really need to start paying attention to directors. The same guy who did "Hostel", also did "A House with a Clovk in its Walls"? That's some general knowledge trivia right there.

The first Hostel for me is the best one. Although the characters are unlikeable in the first movie, in the second one we don’t really build a good connection with any of the women either. Sure they are a lot more sympathetic and sweet but that’s the extent of their character building. The first movie builds off of the predatory relationship between the main characters and the women. What really puts it ahead of the first movie for me is the chase scene, the will he won’t he escape that was more thrilling than the a real torture. In the second movie it is seemingly impossible to escape the facility and the main girl conveniently had enough money to get out (why would she stay in a disgusting grimy hostel when she’s filthy rich?) which is why I prefer the first movie

I don't care whether the victims are men or women, as long as there is no s.a. as part of the tortur. I just think 2 is more creative and the two main villains and their mindset is why it's so much better in my opinion!

Here’s the thing with hostel: the first was intense when originally released, but now rewatching it, it just feels like it’s trying TOO HARD to be gruesome. It’s like a bad version of Hatchet. Hatchet is intended to be so over the top that it’s funny, which it is. Hostel meanwhile is trying to be serious while having gore after gore scene. It’s just never really been my cup of tea. I also dislike the green inferno for the same reason.
