@@Gamerx2000CR yeah, I agree. I think it's all a matter of tone. I even found the first saw movie to be very mildly creepy (not nearly enough to be considered disturbing, but I was a bit unnerved at the situation and premise) but after that it all became a cheese fest. Very enjoyable imo (I think its messiness adds to its charm lol) but not at all scary.

As a horror fan from Serbia, I still always feel the inexplicable need to apologize for its existence every time it's mentioned... Similarly to "Nekromantik", its only purpose is rebelling against the strict censorship policies in Serbia, and making it as disturbing as possible while purposefully naming it "A Serbian Film", to spite the government. So, yeah, anyone who tries to defend it and advocate for its quality in any single way - it's not art nor cinema, it's just an attempted (and failed) political statement that used unsettling topics that have nothing to do with its "message". It's not supposed to be liked by anyone, it's just supposed to be hated by politicians.

That's the two most biblical references in the film. The first you mentioned describes how people came into Nature World (which representation is Jennifer Lawrence's character) and quickly become to destroy everything Mother Nature built with her own hands. And the second obviously represents Jesus, who was killed and that was the sacrifice for purifying the sins of all people

Mother was definitely biblical. Husband is God, Jennifer is Mother Nature, the people who show up are Adam and Eve, Eve eats the fruit which is that thing he was protecting. Their children were Cain and Abel.

What I’ve found for myself is that stories about mortal danger don’t usually upset me too much, they are often exciting but usually it stays firmly in the “fun uncomfortable” zone for me. Stories about pointless suffering, especially torturing of innocents, make me feel a dozen shades of awful. Mainly a mix of depressed, disturbed, and sick with overwhelming anger.

The most disturbing movie I've ever watched is "An American Crime" which was the same as the girl next door. The story of Sylvia Likens, the girl who was tortured by her neighbor. In this version, Syliva was played by Elliot page. I've watched a lot of disturbing stuff but this movie was so hard to stomach I had to keep pausing it. It's because it was a real story. That's what made it so difficult. Just thinking about what this child had to endure. Still makes me feel sick just thinking about it. It reminded me a lot of the Junko Furuta case. And if you know that case then I don't even need to explain how distressing that case was which is why I refuse to watch any movies about it.

For me without a doubt the most disturbing and upsetting movies I’ve ever seen are “An American Crime” and “Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door”. No girl, you are far from alone. I think it’s a awesome movie (partly because of Florence Pugh’s extraordinary performance!), but not one that I can watch several times, like I can ‘Halloween’ or ‘Rosemary’s Baby’. It kind of hurt my soul to watch it because I immersed myself into Dani’s character (accidentally way too much) & it was like an acid trip where I was experiencing what she was & I was having feelings as if all of that was happening to me. On that note- ALL HAIL ARI ASTER!! It’s an incredible movie though. I’ve watched it twice & one day I would like to watch it again. ‘Mother’ however, was one long panic attack for me. NO THANKS! And damnit I wanted to like that movie. Jennifer Lawrence did a fantastic job with ‘Mother’. She has stated that it was tough on her at times very intense. I think it takes a certain type of actor to nail this role, I can’t imagine it with anyone else. As far as Aronofsky’s other films, I enjoyed ‘Black Swan’. ‘Requiem for a Dream’ is high on my best movies of all time list, but I literally will not & cannot watch it ever again. I’m grateful that I experienced it in a rather art-house type theatre. When it was over, my gfriend & I sat there in silence for about 10 long minutes just digesting it.

I think something that stood out to me about this movie is how it could be so beautiful and horrifying at the same time. The stark contrast between how Horror movies are usually set in dark places compared to Midsommar’s Broad daylight background. The realization that the cult truly believes that what they’re doing is justified because they grew up in these conditions. I’ve appreciate how vastly different it is to other movies in the genre.

One of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen is Starve (2014). It's about people who end up trapped in a high school and they have to kill each other to be given food. I made the mistake of eating while watching it and almost vomited a few times because it was so graphic. Some of the ways people are injured and killed stuck with me so much that I still have the occasional nightmare, and I watched the movie almost four years ago.

I did not watch it, and literally just read it off the wiki (i don't plan to watch it especially since someone 'warned' me about it) but it's pretty clear (in the wiki) that it's about religion and symbolism. About mother nature, God, Adam and Eve and their kids and God's followers/fans, and the house to be earth. The baby I think is Jesus (not super sure) since Mother didn't wanna give them to the fans, but low and behold God gives them the baby and it dies (a reference to crucifixion) and then eating him bc there's a saying where we eat the body of Jesus, you know those tiny flat things you eat at church. We take Mother Nature and her home (earth) for granted. So keep an eye out for those symbolisms if you ever rewatch it. It's sounds super interesting, but I'm too cautious for that bc I don't wanna accidentally traumatize myself.

It's funny you mentioned being an Atheist who likes religious stories, because that thing is exactly what got me into the music of Lingua Ignota. I think it was Anthony Fantano that described her lyrical content as her exploring a "morbid curiosity with religion" which is pretty fitting. I recently saw her in concert and she played a full set of church hymns with creepy titles like "Satan's Jeweled Crown" and it was just the best. I think that morbid curiosity perfectly describes a lot of horror fans who like movies with religious undertones.

Funny that everyone has such a strong reaction to a Serbian film- after hearing so much about it, I finally sat down and watched it. Not nearly as horrifying or disturbing for me personally, but I see why it would upset people, because the content matter was just gross. Even if the director claims the movie was made to “fight” child abuse in the sex industry, it just seemed like it was glorifying rape and child abuse for fun.

I read it was a social commentary on Serbian culture and how indifferent Serbian society was becoming to violence, sex and depravity. Someone on Tumblr made a really good post explaining all the different scenes and I thought it was really good especially explaining the ending and what it represented. Personally I think the commentary can apply to most western cultures as well.

Hereditary is absolutely the most disturbing movie I’ve ever seen. I can’t rewatch it, though just by saying that I kind of want to rewatch it. I really shouldn’t though. I’ve realized I get the most scared and feel the most disturbed when something is extremely sad at the same time as being scary. The Orphanage scared me a lot as well for being both scary and sad.

I agree about the disturbing and sad thing. The movies that disturbed me the most were sad too. A movie can be really shocking but at the end of the day if you don't really CARE... Then it's just a story.

I agree that hereditary was really disturbing. I had no idea what was going to happen before I watched. I don't think I could even speak for 30 minutes. And the brothers reaction was wild. But the mom...OMG as a mother, i cant even!! I for sure wont ever watch it again.

It's so interesting to compare what is disturbing for one versus what is disturbing for others. It's why the horror genre is so cool to me. It's really fun to dig into why things upset us or disturb us in a good way or in a bad way! Like ABCs of Death, to me, Y was disturbing in an AMAZING way that stuck with me, whereas I'm with you, L was NOT my disturbing cup of tea! Mother was one that I think could have bothered me but I was so frustrated with its story that I think my own bad attitude kept me safe LOL. And I won't revisit it because I think we would be on the same page. But as usual, a dope vid!

The movie that disturbed me was I Spit On Your Grave. The rape scenes turned my stomach and the revenge . And the revenge is not that bad. I guess cuz the one gun was violating the guy and it was like another rape. I dunno if anyone gets what i mean. But as a rape survivor it was hell. And that you know anyone is capable. Irs totally realistically possible. Its not like ..ohh i dunno a creature movie. The violence against one woman is just jarring. Oh and another one that also shook me was Last House on the Left. I can never look at the actors that portray these just horrible men that just steal a womans soul away the same after. I know its " not them".. but they do a damn good job of the part.
