If you don’t want to watch some of them but are still curious, Mista GG is an awesome creator who does reviews of disturbing movies in a lighthearted way that’s watchable but also doesn’t make it too light if that makes sense. From this list, he’s done The Sadness and Soft and Quiet, but he’s also done Nekromantik and Pink Flamingos for example. Really recommend his channel in general! ♥️

Another channel recommendation for disturbing movie reviews for those curious but not curious enough to watch the actual film ( I’m one of those ) is Couple of Creeps. They’re a small channel but they’re great and they review some of the deeper iceberg movies.

Having boundaries is SO important in media. A lot of people like to debate your authenticity as a horror fan if there are certain subjects you don't want to engage with and I think you putting this out there does so much good for the community.

I don't have boundaries when it comes to horror movies. If other people do, that's their business. I have certain friends I watch the crazy stuff with. Some I don't. There isn't a horror movie I won't watch and I've seen some of the craziest shit ever. But how it's presented is what makes the difference. I find movies like Schindler's List and especially Come and See (1985) far more disturbing.

So much this. I had to leave the Horror fan subreddit because I was getting harassed and attacked so often just for saying that stuff like Hostel isn't really my bag and that I watch horror movies for fun (not the bragging rights that come with having sat though something I personally find gross). It's pretty sad to see that this is what the horror fan community has degenerated into. It used to be a fertile ground for filmmakers and audiences to enjoy and experiment with new filmmaking techniques, plot devices, or cinematography styles. Now it seems like it's been taken over by the same asshole fanboys that gatekeep too many other genres. Ugh. As you said, having boundaries and protecting your mental well-being is VERY important and applies to what media we consume as much as anything else we take in.
@madpoetsociety2917
@madpoetsociety2917 8 ай бұрын
@@ferox965 How nice for you. But having boundaries in the media we consume is actually healthy. It kind of says something though when it requires ever more increasingly graphic doses of gore to satisfy that urge. I'd venture to say that if things like Shindler's List are too disturbing for you, you might want to reasses your media consumption habits. Shindler's List is based on real events of tremendous consequence for all human beings and is far and away more critical viewing than Terrifier 3.

As long as actors aren’t being abused on set I don’t see the difference between any kind of kills in a movie. Like how is an animal death worse or better than a human dead, same with children. I don’t mean to criticize but I find it very fascinating that people enjoy slashers that don’t actually show anything but are bothered by slashers that include actual slashing lol. Maybe the difference is that your brain doesn’t automatically fill in the visual of what the scene must logically include, so for you there’s just…a mental void where the gore hypothetically would be? For me, that would be like watching a nature documentary on birds that never actually shows any birds on screen. If you’re gonna make a slasher, slash! @@int3rn3tg1rl7 yeah I didn’t like the plot of terrifier 2. It’s dumb how he’s obviously her dad or whatever and the way they tried to foil her against the terrifier is dumb. It would be better if it was just like the first one - nothin but slash. So I thought the practical effects were good and were the only thing that made the movie enjoyable. There’s also something so silly and enjoyable about how the pandemic happened when they were filming the “bleach” kill and so they just…kept making that one longer and worse and worse cus they couldn’t get more people on set lol. Like I gotta appreciate how their limitations led them to push the practical effects to their farthest limit and create something not even I was expecting lol.

While there's some pretty gory and extreme scenes in When Evil Lurks, there's more to that movie than just shock value. It's pretty imaginative and has some cool ideas in it. The Nightingale was just depressing more than it was disturbing. I feel like you can skip Titane. You're not missing anything. The Sadness, by contrast, is awesome. It's basically like if you took 28 Days Later and mated it with David Cronenberg's Shivers -- it's great, but you should probably skip it because my guess is that you would have a hard time with it if you're bothered by sexual assault or sexual violence in movies. The House That Jack Built is worth seeing because it invites interpretation. Its appeal is more intellectual than visceral or just entertainment oriented. I feel like it only becomes a disturbing movie when you start engaging with the ideas behind it. Soft and Quiet was embarrassingly stupid. Far from disturbing, there were points in that movie where I literally laughed out loud. It's what I like to call "social justice kitsch." It's what happens when poorly informed people try to make movies with political messages but don't actually understand the topic that well. It kept making me think of that old exploitation film I Hate Your Guts, only way less charming and entertaining.

The Terrifier franchise is definitely extremely violent but it’s done in a way that is almost comical at times. It’s so over the top that it doesn’t bother me as much as other films. Art literally rips one of the victims arms in half with his bare hands like a hotdog lol. The practical effects are incredible in the movies though and that could also be a turn off because certain things do look very real since barely any CGI is used. I totally agree with you as a mom I can't watch horror with small children like under 10 getting hurt and if it involves the parents and they are over 10 I cried like a baby setting through scream 5 the sheriff Judy and Wes scene. I was postpartum with my daughter maybe a month when I watched it, I laugh now about it but sometimes I'm like no I just can't.

You're not missing anything with The House That Jack Built. It's not even disturbing, just an absolute misogynist slog.

The when evil lurks section is completely understandable,, I watched it with my boyfriend only knowing about the first disturbing scene and the later scenes we both had our eyes closed because it was so intense

When Evil Lurks does some really bold and brutal things...but its not done in a way that made me feel icky. Something like Terrifier, on the other hand just felt like it was made by a sociopath expressing his sadistic fantasies.

Great video! I would only like to point out that The Nightingale is not a horror movie, but a historical drama (a good one!). That being said, the scene you refer to is certainly disturbing

Everyone has their own tastes and should watch what is for them...... going outside your norm isn't a bad thing that's how you find hidden gems that you wouldn't have otherwise seen but i agree no one should shame another for personal preferences no matter the reason

I’ve been a parent 17 years. Made no difference to my horror viewing. Like my late Mother said, “It’s just rubber and ketchup!” 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good for you? 😭 there’s also a clear difference between having a newborn child and a 17 year old - a new mother is already going to have a ton of anxiety surrounding her kid and some topics will only accelerate that insane amount of anxiety

Also: I will be front row opening night for terrifier 3. Idc if it’s a man, woman, or child Art kills. To me there’s no difference. It’s fictional and all in good fun. French movies have been pushing boundaries for yearssss ie martyrs, irréversible, and dans ma peau. If you want a truly scary movie but not too disturbing check out Terrified on shutter. Made by the director of when evil lurks but it’s more psychological and messes with your head Also, the disturbing label on the house that jack built is an iverreaction. It’s not gory (not more than the typical horror), and the actor portrays a psychopath so well it’s truly chilling. I expected it to be a lot worse but it was pretty tame

Delicate is actually better than the last few. The other seasons being so bad recently probably play a part in that though

Art has already killed two children in All Hallows’ eve, they showed the children’s “trigger warning”! but decapitated bodies, but of course I understand if this is not the movie experience that everyone is able to experience, and that of course doesn’t mean just because you want to see it that you’re a weirdo or a bad person, we all have different comfort level when it comes to fiction. It would be weird if it were non fiction and you cared to watch it. Horror movies yes are to make you scared but not to twist you up for life, you should never feel super uncomfortable watching any kind of movie and not being able to stomach everything or force yourself to be comfortable, that doesn’t make you a fake horror fan, if you love horror the most “tame” horror then you are a fan.
