the thing that got me into Soho so much are 3 things: Anya Taylor Joy, the stunning visuals in some scenes, and the 50s/60s aesthetic... ive been really wanting horror movies set in the 50s/60s, cause i love that aesthetic.. (if anyone knows of good ones, lemme know, please.. but i dont necessarily want them made in the 50s, i want newer movies, but set in the 50s.. i want horrors with that aesthetic

Last Night in Soho is currently my favorite film of the year so far. ❤️ Pig is up there too. Couldn’t disagree with you more on the ending of Last Night in Soho btw. The ending was perfectly foreshadowed and built-up throughout the film and was executed brilliantly from a character and thematic standpoint. I have no fucking clue what beef people have with it. In my opinion, it’s a near perfect movie that I think will most likely get more and more loved by people as time passes.

Early on in the film I thought to myself, I hope the twist isn’t that the landlord is the girl she’s seeing in her dreams. And sure enough! On second rewatch the twist worked more for me in the story as a whole. In fact I even liked it the second time. The one thing I did NOT like was the terrible CGI while the dream and reality are colliding at the end on the staircase and in the bedroom. This could have been so cool visually, as most of the other visuals in this film are. But it just looked laughable. I did enjoy the film quite a bit as a whole though. That sequence is my only real major gripe.

And with it being your favorite of the year, totally different genre, but be sure to see “C’mon C’mon”. I just saw it and it is a MASTERPIECE and easily the best film I’ve seen all year. And did you see “The Night House”? That was my favorite genre film thus far this year. But Soho is second place. 🙂
@RyansChannel0203

I’ve seen The Night House. Fantastic movie, but I personally love A Quiet Place: Part 2 and Last Night in Soho just a little more. It does come close though. I’ve yet to see C’mon C’mon, but I have been planning on seeing it. As for the CGI on that staircase scene, I thought it was visually stunning to look at. While you can definitely tell it’s not real, that was kind of the point when it came to Ellie slipping in between past and present so frequently.

Pretty much agreed on 'Last Night in Soho'. Movies like that are part of the reason why I ditched grading movies and measuring them on some non-existent hierarchy , because while those kinds of movies can have some elements that I did not like and there were choices made that didn't sit well w/ me (concerning Soho, I wasn't too big on the 3rd act myself), there could also be stuff in those movies that I totally, totally **love** despite everything else. Especially when it's a film like Soho, which was through-and-through an Edgar Wright film, like most of his films are. No compromises, so thus I love the stuff I love while not liking some of the other stuff. How does one grade that? So yeah, very solid evaluation on that one! Interesting that you included 'FernGully' in this recap. Few may know it (did ok at best at the box office upon release but did way better on video), but as far as early '90s animated movies go, it does have some interesting history to it regarding Robin Williams and for someone like me - an animation fan - there's lots of recognizable names on it.

I think last night and soho was a fantastic movie. The way the director was to handle multiple themes at the same time and able to put a good amount of detail into each one made the movie flow. PIG was also an unexpectedly great movie. I only watched it because it said some guy lost his pig and it was rated R so I though “awesome.” SPOILERS the way that the pig was able to teach a man on his journey to look for it how to mourn the loss of his wife as well as accept certain parts of his past was a great hidden gem with this movie. Not a huge fan of Nicolas Cage but I think he did very well with his role. For Antlers it was a wreck, a very good concept idea that tried to huddle multiple issues and it just didn’t blend well at all.

I loved Last Night in Soho. Only movie I have rewatched in theaters to date. The use of music was amazing and visuals were stunning. The characters felt relatable in a lot of ways. And my favorite part is thinking about the lore behind who Ellie was, why she sees the things she does, who her parents might actually be, etc. I just think there’s so many theories you can pull and I just thought it was such a fun watch.

This is crazy! I watched Ferngully a lot when I was a child. Almost nobody knows it here in Germany. I got the video cassette as a birthday present and was so intrigued by the story. And I agree! In Last Night In Soho, they totally got the class mate/room mate perfectly correct! She was really well acted & written. That is totally how girls studying fashion act in my experience. Yay was glad to add a couple of your recs to my list - i just recently joined Letterbox'd and am building up a watch list. I used to keep all my horror watches in an Excel sheet - oof - so I've moved everything I've watched over there but I still need to add all the reviews of watches past. That will be a big job! A favorite thing I watched in November (and am still watching) is Sweet Home. Korean. I know you're not a big series watcher but I do recommend it (even having not finished it yet). It's really fun and the monsters are cool and it's just very dynamic and interesting. I also like the depth they are beginning to unfold about the characters and the way in which they do it (I'm only in three episodes deep so far.) I also watched Katla on Netflix. Icelandic. Damn, is that dark. Ìt didn't go as deeply into what I was hoping it would so it's more of a drama with a small supernatural component but it punches hard for what it does touch on. I enjoyed it's darkness but it's not easy watching.

I felt the exact same way about The Deep House. You want to like it but “falls flat” is the perfect way to summarize it. I grew up playing the Silent Hill games, and I recall being so excited when the movie was about to release. It’s not a great movie by any means, and being a fan of the games goes such a long way in being able to appreciate the movie. I love it though - it captures the essence of the Silent Hill universe overall quite well. The soundtrack, pulled from the games of course, is so unique and wonderful.
