Possible reasons why your Ford escape is running poorly/stalling at lights/reasons it’s smoking

In this video I had a bad fuel pressure regulator but I also get into how to check for a bad coil. And how by looking at your spark plugs you can tell that the coil was not firing. If you have a bad running anything doesn’t even matter if it’s a Ford Escape or not you should get it running as quickly as possible because eventually it will ruin your catalytic converter system and we all know how expensive them are so I hope the video is helpful and you feel a little bit more informed God bless and have the best of days.

I had this problem. FYI - the gas that bypasses the pressure regulator goes into your vacuum lines. One of them goes to the Power Brakes. It greatly affected my brake performance. The brakes never failed but were very soft. I did drive the vehicle approximately 200 miles, after replacing the pressure regulator, and it automatically vacuumed all of the gas out of the brake system and they work as normal now. I am posting this so anyone with the same issue can try to run the fumes out of the system before replacing the main brake components. (expensive and time consuming). The design of the pressure sensor is one of those, only an engineer could design something this stupid. It also took a long time for the engine to quit smoking out the exhaust. At least an hour of idle. It cleared itself up for the most part as is a reliable vehicle again. Hope this helps someone.

The Clay Way awesome video. I just changed my valve gasket and spark plugs on my 2007 Ford Escape. Now it’s sputtering when I hold the gas pedal down in idle it hits about 3,000 rpms and drops to 2500 and goes back up to to 3,000 and repeats the cycle. I did pull the fuel line not realizing I didn’t need to but wondering what the issue could be

I have one too. It cut off while I was driving. Now I can't get it to turn over have replaced quite a few things plus I'm the process of moving. Very stressful to top it off can even a car cuz they never have any. It's been since Friday the 13th and I'm not superstitious

Clay, great channel. I'm in Battle Creek. I'm not a car guy but always have enjoyed the few small things I've done. Thought I'd share something. 2009 Escape 2.5 engine. For 5 yrs it would spit and sputter off/on primarily from a stop...light/stop sign. Almost like it wasn't getting gas. Heck i thought it was gonna completely stall out a few times. Check engine light was on. Service station and Oreilly checked it on their computer but i can't recall the code. Everyone told me I'd have to leave it with them for a few days. So i started looking stuff up online. Changed the egr and throttle body(pardon me if I'm botching the names). No fix. Gave up on it for awhile. Did another search online and found a mechanic who said 90% of the time its the purge valve canister. $15 part so i gave it a shot. BOOM! Fixed. Made me feel like Superman. Lol. Keep in mind I'm a desk jockey so not very good at mechanical stuff. Oh, my Escape is getting ready to hit 230k miles and when i changed oil last time didnt appear like it needed an ounce of oil. 230k and not burning an ounce of oil? Hasn't been a PERFECT car. Air conditioner compressor, valve cover, front end stuff like bearings and tie rods.... But overall a pretty sound car. Anyhow thought I'd share. Take care

@@sharpcarco thanks Clay. I do kinda have a question. I keep debating whether or not I'm pushing my luck driving a car with 230k miles. But I've kept up with maintenance on my Escape... Oil changes never longer than 5k. Transmission fluid changed about 3-4x. Newer water pump and what I've already mentioned. Is it crazy to think i could take this Escape to 300k miles? I realize you could never answer my question with 100 percent certainty and there are no guarantees with ANY car but still curious to hear any thoughts. I kinda like my Escape. Is plain n simple but its nice not having a new car to be overly concerned about. Thanks

My 2002 escape started driving terrible today. When I turned on my AC it got worse. Even having the fans on it seemed worse. It won't go over 40- 50 mph when I have the pedal to the floor. Im going to check the hose and see if it's wet? It was really hot under the hood and some some on the driver's side when I went to a stop sign. It wasn't black smoke. I'm very worried. Are the fuel pressure sensor is the fuel pressure regulator the same item? I have a print out with possible issues and the are itemized at two different problems relating to p01943 code. Changed the fuel pressure sensor and the next day my 06 Ford Escape stalled out on the freeway. 4:14 what I replaced being called the pressure sensor was called the pressure regulator?

Hi i really enjoy your videos. very helpful. I have a 2006 ford escape 6cyl 2wd, in Canada. I have a few questions. The error code p0353 I cannot remove. Have put 2 new coil packs and spark plugs in the # 3 cylinder(back of engine drivers side) and error comes back immediately. All coil packs on back of engine were changed. Also with key in on position the fuel pump makes weak buzzing sound every few seconds. It will start and go in drive but will stall as soon as I give it gas. The only error I get is the p0353. This error has occurred for about a year and only came back a few times but is now permanent. I cant drive it anywhere as it will stall. I'm guessing this is the PCM. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Ty

Hi! I have a 2012 Ford Escape got a new battery Oil change alternator but a few months later I turned a corner and my oil/ battery light came on car stopped running. It came back on and was working after I turned it off and restarted. Took it to a mechanic (Gattos) they can’t find anything wrong with it. Any advice?

Ive got a 2011 ford escape. Normally it only cranks but wont start. I can get it started if I gas it but it dies as soon as I stop. I dont have any other major indications that anything is bad. I had it running for about 1 minute just now while gassing it at about 3-400rpm. And when I check the engine bay something was glowing at the bottom over on the passenger side as if it was hot.

So... weird issue with mine not sure what's up. Can't find anything that matches up with symptoms. Var starts and runs fine, seems like it is idling a little low at a stand still Sometimes. Most issue I have is. When warm. If I make a kinda sharp left curve. It acts like it is out of gas. But it only does it for like a second. Check engine light says fuel pressure rail sensor and that's the only code I got. Other then that it runs like a champ. 08 escape. Same motor as in this video. Any ideas?

I may need some input on 2005 Ford escape hybrid sports utility 4wd 2.3 4cyl.. just got transfer case replaced but now after driving for a week or 2 I've started to get a wiff of gas randomly while driving but then goes away after a little while and now I'm hearing a very slight winding while accelerating and notice I'm a little over the 3 in RPMs going about 40. When trying to pick up more speed it then hits closer to the 4 in RPMs. So i release and try again so that I'm not over doing it or making in worse. But Also at the same time that i noticed the slight windin noise I also noticed very light vibration while idle. It doesn't idle long before going quiet but engine is still on.. i didnt have this problem before the transfer case went bad. Just wondering what it maybe that's causing this. I can definitely sense something is off from just being able to feel it with my foot resting on the gas pedal allowing the car to glide in whatever speed I'm in. Over all i get a strange feeling that it's not performing as it should. Any ideas? In the meantime going to get a complete tune up see if that helps..

Hey Clay, I have a 2011 Ford Escape. I've replaced the battery last week because every morning I needed to jump it. This vehicle is stalling at 40 mph , on a turn and at lights. Happened 4 times today. My mechanic disconnected the rear windshield motor because it was burned out and he thought that's what was drawing from the battery. Well, after he disconnected it I drove home and it cut out again on the way. Stopped, put it in park and started it and drve home. I'm a little nervous about driving this. What do you suggest?? Very knowledgeable video! I have 2012 Ford Escape V6 engine. Runs awesome but just recently I noticed that I've been losing mileage like crazy. I watched a video that showed it could be my air filter causing the problem, so I got that replaced and it's doing the same thing. So my son has a 2015 Ford Escape with a 2.0 ecoboost. All the sudden it lost power would only go about 35 mph. Took it to some locals guys and they thought they new what it was but it ended up not being that. Then tool it to Ford and I normally would not do this because of their outrageous labor rates and I was right about that because they called and said it's probably the turbo and it would cost $900 to $1,000.00 just to find out. Anyway I picked it up. The power loss is still there and a ton of grayish white smoke with a strange smell poor out the tailpipe. Any help would greatly be appreciated

I'm in the process of rebuilding the motor in my 02 escape..top end almost complete, tagging sensors and a few more gaskets now but it's crazy mine don't have a fuel pressure regulator at least in that location and it is the XLT sport 3.0l🤷🏾‍♂️

Were your catalytic converters bad? Generally, that’s the reason that these engines go bad.

Hello there I have a 2002 ford escape v6 I just replaced mainifold catalytic converters on bank 1 bank 2 coils plugs valve gaskets done all with in 2 weeks car is stalling driving and coming to a stop now 3rd catalytic converter was removed and straight piped into muffler when work was done bank 2 catalytic converter was melted completely bank one was totally clean now having a stalling issue

Well you probably got two issues and of course I can’t be for certain because this is just a text message it’s very common for the alternators to go out In these I have several videos on that And I imagine once you get that done you’re gonna find out that Your battery is probably no good either meaning that it probably has bad cells inside it

I would be about 99% sure even over a text message that you blew out a spark plug I have an excellent video showing you how to fix it if the thread stripped out it is extremely common with these and it’s really not that difficult fix. The one that comes off the vacuum hose in the back middle of the intake and goes to the left.... Where does it attach too? Please help! It's a 2002 Ford Escape xlt v6 3.0

Lift up your hood and look at the bottom side there is a diagram that shows you where the hoses go. I can’t tell you for certain wear that one goes but it will tell you it’s a white tag with black hose on it

Hey Clay, I have 2002 escape v6, have the surging idle by itself, sometimes not always more noticeable stop and go traffic, I have changed many parts, spark plugs all coils intake gasket egr valve and gasket intake air control valve mass air sensor pcv and Tps sensor, and I use a smoke machine check for vacuum leak and it seems holding , I don’t have black smoke coming out from the tail pipe, it has been like that for a while when it does happen while stop at the traffic light I rock the steering wheel back and forth a lot of the time the idle will come down , any suggestions? Hey Andy I actually just did a video on that.... Exact same thing In addition to it surging at an idol after a while my air would only blow out the defrost.... so if you’re having that problem my video that I have up here in a couple of days will certainly be of help. In my situation it was the vacuum lines behind the intake were cracked but you have to look close at them because they will look fine from a short distance away but once you start bending them a little bit you’ll notice a bunch of cracks. And it cured that surging problem not a real expensive repair I just only recommend you repair the lines one at a time so you don’t get mistaken where they go. So watch out for that that may be helpful for you if it’s not that it is a possibility that your EGR is not working properly because it is mechanically vacuum operated. And it could also be your oxygen sensors but I’m fairly certain that you’re going to find some vacuum lines that you may have missed if you’ve already replaced them and the video may be a little help. I’ve been extremely busy and I still need to make the open and close but I believe I have the root of the video all done. Have a good day and welcome to the channel

Hay clay first time finding you"" my 04 Ford escape idles rough when first starting it,, and going on road ,if it gets in the least little pull up little hill etc it starts missing,, sputtering,, and all gauges go crazy, most time if I hit bottom and take it out of over drive it will clear up go back to normal, or mash gas pedal to floor and it will clear up,,,But"" it seems to do it worse and lot more often when it a rainy wet day"" Heeelllp!! Well, Abbott, more than likely it sounds like your catalytic converter is plugging up, which will eventually ruin your engine so I would recommend getting that checked out or checking it out yourself.

My father in law has an 06 escape. That starts fine and drives ok. But once at operating temp if u switch to drive or reverse it'll shut off. Any ideas what it could be. Park and neutral starts up fine. Thanks

Quite possibly could be a plugged the catalytic converter, could be the EGR is also not functioning properly or the vacuum going to the EGR Is not there can’t be for certain of any of these things of course but I’ll give you some ideas and things to look at

Well either your starter is bad or worst case scenario your engine is locked up You need to turn the harmonic balancer and make sure the engine is not locked up. If the engine spins when you turn the big bolt on the harmonic bouncer then you need a new starter if not you need a new engine you’ll have to do some research on this to see how to do this procedure I do not have video of that

Well thanks for the kind words. More than likely that’s happening because your rear Catalytic Converter‘S is plugged and the air has nowhere to escape but through the EGR valve…

It’s the catalytic converter for sure it happened to me twice I bought a entire new system for 600 dollars off rock auto you won’t be able to straight pipe because the o2 sensors are located in the cats but changing the system will fix your problem

You could have a problem with the catalytic converter but more than likely The EGR is mechanical , so your EGR is probably stuck open, or it could be your idle air control Well there’s different things that could possibly be bought them in the most common

Any people who own a Ford escape with a V6. Mine is acting weird but it's not throwing any check engine codes. When you first put it in drive or in reverse the idle drops low and it runs really rough, makes a weird noise and it feels like it's going to die, until it starts moving then it runs and shifts fine. And only once you come to a full stop and wait at a red light it will feel like it's going to die again. Any ideas?

Well, you have to have something going on my guess would be something to do with the heater core. Possibly a rusty line leaking onto the exhaust.

That or it’s possible that your PCV valve is plugged creating too much vacuum. Just guessing on that that may not have anything to do with it but I would definitely return it as defective.

Well obviously without getting much more technical and possibly even looking at it I would say follow the video the unfortunate part is I don’t remember every single video I make I have over 800 of them so you would have to be a little bit more specific about the problem and about the part that you’re thinking about replacing I can’t see the same thing you seen when you were watching the video they only give me the comments they don’t necessarily give me the actual video that it’s connected with if that makes sense they show me a teeny tiny thumbnail and I can’t remember all the videos so I can’t be more specific very sorry

Oh fair enough. 2003 ford escape ford dealer told the lady it was stalling out at red lights due to transmission. So she got the trans rebuilt and it didnt fix the issue. Im thinking its something else engine runs perfectly it just stalls after driving only when coming to a stop

Since it’s a 2003 I don’t think it has a fuel pressure monitor like the newer ones do which is what I think this video is about so you could try the fuel pressure regulator which is located on the passenger side of the engine Center next to the intake look up fuel pressure regulator replacement for a Ford escape and see if that’s the problem there’s a rubber hose connected to it if the rubber hose has fuel inside it then it is defective

Got it home. It only dies when it is warm after driving abit. I dont believe it is fuel related. It starts fine after dieing just wont idle when warm

No unfortunately now that you describe it that way it’s quite possibly a bad catalytic converter especially if you ever drove it for any distance with the bad spark plug or coil raw will drop down inside the catalytic converter eventually plugging it up. That’s one of the reasons than the other reason is just from bad fuel that has been ran inside it over the years I would have it checked out by a mechanic they would look at the live data and then be able to tell for sure if the catalytic converter is one

Well that’s a tough one to answer over a text message it could be that you have a bad fuel pump it could be that your EGR valve is Open all the time your catalytic converter could be plugged up. And the list could go on and on and on. Very sorry I couldn’t be of much help with that situation without knowing up there about more details

Hi. Clay great video! Q: I have a 2.3 4cly it will not take off fast at all from a stop. It idles just fine and revs up just fine. I just replaced the entire exhaust system thinking it was the catalytic converter but it's still doing the same thing. I have reprogram the computer but it's still doing the same thing. If you can help me out it would be greatly appreciated or at least head me in the right direction. Thanks

Is your gear selector working correctly? Are you certain you’re not taking off in second gear? Try pulling the gear selector all the way down taking off and shifting through the gears manually see if that has any impact Let me know how that turns out for you that’s a very common problem people think they’re taking off and drive and they’re actually taking off and second gear

Unfortunately that did not work it has almost no go on take off but after five or six seconds it will start picking up speed and also does it once I have speed and let go of the gas it will take another few seconds in order for it to re-engage and take off again it is showing a po340 code on the reader but the camshaft position sensor is new would you suggest me replacing it again?

@@BigChristopher yes.. I did the timing chain had jumped😑 witch is odd because its steel chain what. I found out was the bolt that holds it down loosened somehow...hope this helps the next guy. Good luck

There is generally tape around the wire loom’s from the factory so that would be normal

More than likely you’ve got a plug catalytic converter because of the misfire .... when a vehicle misfires it is not burning fuel and then it drops down into the catalytic converter which is super heated and then the fuel ignites inside the catalytic converter destroying the catalytic converter. ...... Of course that’s just a guess because I’m not there I know you tried to give me the information you could but there’s a lot of information that would be involved in determining that problem

That’s what mine would do when my fuel pressure regulator module was going to be active like I showing this video. Eventually it got to where it wouldn’t start at all. You can start it up and wait down by the fuel tank and take a listen right before it dies you’ll hear the fuel pump cut off if the fuel Pump module Electronic module is going bad. Right now I don’t have any thoughts off the top of my head that I didn’t speak about inside the video

Yes it could and I think I mentioned that in the video as well. I work on about 50 different types of vehicles so it’s difficult for me to try to remember every single little thing that could be a possibility I just try to help people out and give them some ideas and directions to go in my situation it was the fuel pump driver module

2010 Ford Escape 4 cylinder AWD. She drives great and everything is good and no engine lights however wants to die at a stop sign or light and low idle. when going from fevers to drive after been raining, does it then too. Sorry to hear that Sean more than likely it’s because your catalytic converter‘s are plugged obviously I would need a lot more information but that’s been a very common problem with these especially after they’ve had a misfire for reconsider amount of time before it was repaired properly. With a misfire on these particular engines the fuel goes down inside the catalytic converter and eventually builds up and explodes destroying and melting the inside of the catalytic converter. Not allowing the engine exhaust to breathe making them either not start or shut off after they have been running I’m certain that you noticed a considerable large amount of fuel usage. At least that’s usually associated with this particular situation that I believe you are having. I hope I’m correct but I also hope I’m not correct because it’s not easy or cheap to repair. Let me know sorry if I am incorrect

I hope not but the mechanic said it was bad wiring which he fixed and I had to get a exhaust gas recirculation modulator so hopefully after installing and code clearing it'll run fine
