I think the idea that France would give half of italy to Savoy rather than creating a new kingdom of naples offsets me a lot. Another thing you didn't mention is that a France with more control over the land could have went into a way larger naval build up, especially under Louis the 14th, wich could have been able to prevent the british to become absolutely dominant in Europe. Also even if i believe that Bavaria will get rewarded, the idea that Louis the 14th will concede the entire lowlands is quite ridiculous to me. In fact in your scenario, France litteraly gets almost nothing out of the war. Literally just a little bit of the alpine fronteer (poor region at the time) and an alliance with little to no guaranties. France doesnt even acquire a part of Lorraine, no catalonia wich was part of France for centuries and could help them control the coast and push back muslim pirates, neither any isles. It looks more like a stalemate than a victory to me, even when considering historical factors.
@Freedmoon44

The problem with all of that is that France by that point may have been the strongest single power in Europe by military might alone, but the Spanish succession war happened right after another coalition war which ended in Status quo solely because of the Spanish situation, this is France after essentially 2 decades of British naval blocade, with an economy weary from decades of near constant state of war due to Louis XIVth agressive war and diplomacy aswell as the building of the palace of Versaille which by itself already strain the economy. France didnt seek to extand its land that much ultimately, it sought to become the Hegemonic power of Europe like Austria/Spain was previously which created the Franco-Ottoman alliance to offset this (France being strong enough militarily and economically to stand up to the union, just not winning alone during those days). And this scenario makes it just that, Spain and France will probably unite, Phillip would probably find a way to get rid of Louis silently while Phillip of Orleans is busy struggling with the early days of his regency filled with compromises, and either way the Brits didnt get free access into the Spanish Empires trade, nor too much in the Mediteranean, weakening their growth, while the Austrian Empire is already on the backfoot as an Hungarian independance would make the Bohemian rise in revolt at one point while Hungary itself serves as both a buffer with the Ottomans and a pain in the butt. Prussia now has to deal with a proper germanic rival in Bavaria supported by France (considering the investment Franxe made with its own Germanic ally you can bet itll try to protect it, btw yes likely that France did expand into some border territories in the lowlands but not too much) Spain and France together actually becomes a decent threat to the Royal Navy meaning more investment into the royal navy and less in the army or less foreign support. Yada yada yada

Because he doesn't know shit about history, that's why. He's an HOI4 obsessed who loses it when talking about anything before 1800. It's sad some say he's the fresh hope of KZbin alternate history. Naples already existed then, in the Iberian PU. Louis XIV was 75 at the end of the war, no way he would've been the one to make any significant change in the navy after the war. Rest, of course, you're right.

@Freedmoon44 11 ай бұрын
@@joaquinrodriguez227 i never said it was hegemonic i said it would pose a decent threat, because we can only speculate And to its credit, considering the Royal did triomph over the Spaniard and french fleet litteraly less than 30 years later to claim hegemony, granted spain was a bit weaker but it was mainly on the continent. I think it Safe to say in any 1v1 the English would likely win because they dedicated their entire doctrine to naval warfare while Spain still has to keep up with the continental powers. If you however threw in a Trafalgar early without Nelson i doubt they would get a similar result a century early. Either way i was considering future consequences in mind, even if we go by Spain and UK have equal strenght in fleet, France would be the tipping point. Therefore the British would DEFINITLY invest massively in develloping its own fleet further to match it and possibly surpass it, at the cost of his land armies, like usual, if youd like i can always take away decent and it works exactly as intended still

I would guess that Hungary would have also conquered Croatia, due to it historically being a part of the Hungarian crown and the strategic importance sea access Also, I don't get why France would seed so much in a treaty with the British, surely with Austria knocked out of the war, they could turn their eyes towards firstly retaking the Lowlands and secondly gaining their natural borders down south without making Savoy, an enemy state, able to threaten them by gaining southern Italy

I think my biggest issue with this scenario is Savoy getting Sicily and Naples, while being an enemy of France during a French victory. The thumbnail gave it away, but imo it’d be far more likely some distant relative of the French royal family gets Naples while Sicily goes to a neutral Italian power that isn’t landlocked like Savoy is, such as Genoa or Tuscany. (Assuming no major dynastic ties between them and one of the belligerents)

The study of the historical war aims of France shows that this scenario was quite possible. France knew they could not annex the Spanish Netherlands, and that the Spanish could not protect them. Hence the gift to an ally, the Elector of Bavaria, who was the Governor of the Spanish Netherlands before the War. A strong Bavaria was the most intelligent way of weakening the Habsburg power in Germany. France would have thus more gained with that solution than taking "Belgium" for itself (which was unacceptable of both GB and the Dutch). However, I'm not sure the Italian scenario is realistic. I think they would have taken Savoy-Piemont and given Milan to the duke of Savoy in exchange (it was one of the French proposals) ; but Naples would have been kept by Spain ; losing both Milan and the Netherlands was already quite difficult to accept for Spain, which did not have the same interests than France. The French interests were to use the undefendable Spanish territories to bargain and increase their power and weaken their enemies'.

Correction: Hungary *maybe* would have *tried* to conquer Croatia. 1) Succeeding is at the alternate historian's hands. 2) It had been Habsburg since Ferdinand I's first war with Süleyman I, so I don't see why you set the imperative.

I think in future of this scenario there could be no partisions of PLC. Habsburgs are too weak, and PLC has now ally in Hungary, because this two nations are allways close friends, and have common enemies in Habsburgs and Ottomans. Not to mention that Francis II Rákóczi, leader of Hungarian uprising before that was hiding in Poland. Ottomans still would opose partision as they were in our timeline, cause stronger Russia is never good to them. But lets go back to first half of this century. After Great Northern War and later death of August II Sa(u)s Stanisław Leszczyński is elected as King in 1733. His atitiude was mostly pro France and wanted to centralize state, to make PLC Great Again, but in our timeline intervension from Russia and Prussia made him abdicate and leave the PLC, and go to France where he lived to his death in 1766. But in our new Timeline where France is Stronger and already have one ally in Central Europe (Hungary), Hungary will help Leszczyński and with aid from France Leszczyński will stay on Throne and Reform Country, somthing that August III Failed to do. And now we are in the middle of century, with stronger, more centalized Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, in Alliance with Hungary and France thanks to mariage between Maria Leszczyńska and Louis XV. If Seven Years War happens in this timeline, Commonwealth will probably stay neutral or aid France, but if Habsburgs were fighting on British side, wich in this timeline is possible, Hungary and PLC will Join on French Side. this would make war on continent little more balanced, but i think we can give victory to Polish and Hungarians in central europe, by the help of Russia, when in the sea, Britain still rules the waves. I think Poland would take part of Silesia from Prussia, or even finaly retake East Prussia if there was some kind of mirracle of Polish warfare. Hungary woud retake Croatia in this war. I thing that it's even likely to happen to king of Hungary to be elected as King of PLC after Death of Leszczyński, but i'm not sure. In Elections of 1769 (Leszczyński dies in this scenario 3 years later, he is a King after all) 3 main Candidates for Polish Throne, Leszczyński's son, King of Hungary and somone from/or backed by Czartoryski Familia, maybe even Stanisław August Poniatowski. What happens after that, is up to you PH. I'm not brave enough to thing about future wars, revolution and napoleon.

@GeneralYen
@GeneralYen Жыл бұрын
@@genovayork2468 Yes, the maximum, but the maximum within what was really possible at that time. You don't define a war aim if you know that the rest of Europe will league against you if you take it. It is the standard of the diplomacy of the age to keep his ambitions down, so that one's revendications will be accepted by other states. This is why in the end of his reign Louis XIV had renounced to annex the Spanish Netherlands : he knew it was not viable in the long term for France, because it would be like a permanent casus belli for the Dutch and British. However, a good French war aim would have been to annex Savoy and give Milan to the Duke in exchange (at the expanse of the Spanish...). It was indeed a possibility studied by French diplomats at a time. Moreover, think of Napoleon's "diplomacy" : he destroyed the power of his opponents, so that they always wanted to fight him. Scholars today argue that if he had a softer diplomacy, he would have less dominated Europe, but his conquests would have been more durable. But he was a "all or nothing" guy, at least at the end of his reign. It was not like that during the "Westphalian Era". For the rest of your argument, I quite agree with you, it doesn't contradict what I meant to say : the comment I responded talked about "completely roll over France and install a puppet in France". That's destroying an independent French power, to me, even without a loss of territory. But of course you can think of other ultimate destructions, like you argued.

@GeneralYen
@GeneralYen Жыл бұрын
@@genovayork2468 A very well rounded argument, thank you very much. I did bring arguments about what the "maximum war aim" means. But you want "the proof" ? It's simple : the works about the Austrian diplomacy of the age show that their most ambitious declared war aim (sidenote : a war aim being what you declare wanting at the beginning of a conflict) in this war was indeed to put a Habsburg on the throne and to take all the Spanish possessions. This was the point of the WSS. This is the maximum they could achieve because they knew they couldn't have had more. And why ? well, I've already said why in my upper "parralel" comment, as you've said : conquests were limited by diplomacy in that era. Besides, the other allies were very clear they didn't want Austrian hegemony, and when the pretender Charles became Emperor, they became very much reluctant tio put him on the Spanish throne. You can have a different opinion, and I will be pleased to respond to it peacefully, but I beg you to propose arguments, not despise arguments from others, please.

Yes they did, it's a weird Anglo assumption to think they lost it. And it's not the first "alternate history" video on KZbin to have this take about the Spanish succession war. The Bourbons literally won the succession crisis and transform Spain into a relatable allie for all wars coming after this one until the French revolution. That was a huge European geopolitical shifting in favor of France

This map makes for an interesting war of austrian succession, in a best case scenario for France and Bavaria, when the war breaks out the bavarian lowlands would hugely facilitate a french invasion of the Netherlands, this may cause the dutch to either fall harder and quicker or outright not join the war, the greatly weakened austria most likely wont stand a chance against the italo spanish troops who already posses milan to the south, the franco bavarian forces in the middle and the prussian forces in the north, without the dutch and the austrians the coalition would fail no matter how much money the brits throw at them, and with that defeat and with no humilliation for Charles VII of bavaria he may be able to keep his position as holy roman emperor and king of Bohemia and assert his claims to the german parts of the Habsburg domain, ending the Habsburgs as a serious contestant for german hegemony, after that Germany would turn either into a divided 2 way rivalry between the british supported protestant prussians in the north against the french supported catholic bavarians in the south or the 2 would be content with what they have developing a sense of northern and southern german unity respectively and overall friendship and cooperation seeing as, unlike the Habsburgs, the Bavarians weren't rlly opposed to the Prussians and, unlike the more great power oriented austrians the bavarian leadership was far more invested in arts and culture and didnt meddle to much with policies not involving germany

The Dutch weren't interested in colonies or directly administering far removed foreign lands They saw them as too expensive, unprofitable, and would require constant defense not just from the native peoples but from rival kingdoms. It's why they preferred the Dutch East and West India companies and small trading posts that were for the most part established with permission from the host nations.
@MrInkSpot
@MrInkSpot Жыл бұрын
@@skatingfreak1670 The Dutch still were interested in some colonies that would present a financial gain, or in the case of taking colonies so other nations could not gain the resources there or strengthen their positions in areas the Dutch considered their spheres of influence. In addition, the Dutch were also interested in colonial positions in the New World such as in Chile (where the West India Company attempted to carve out a colonial holding) Brazil, where the Dutch were interested in taking over the Portuguese colonies in order to take the profitable Sugar trade and also New Amsterdam, for both the prestige of controlling a North American colony, and also for the fur trade etc. The Dutch did build colonies, and although they did prefer creating trading posts and making money rather than making an empire, they would not turn up their noses if the chance came to conquer a region and expand the Dutch realm.

This scenario is strange, France gains nothing in this war and on the contrary creates a very problematic state in Italy while weakening Spain which it wanted to seize. Your peace treaty is more like a lost war than anything else. It would have been much more logical to make Naples an autonomous crown than to cede it to an enemy state which would prevent any French influence in the peninsula. France had an army during the reign of Louis XIV considered invincible, I don't see why, knowing that he defeated Austria, why he ceded so much territory, especially since the United Kingdom was not a real threat on the continent.

I've got an interesting one that I'm pretty sure I have never seen covered, the "What if Spain and Portugal hadn't expelled their Jews?", because when they did, it devastated entire regions and sectors. They lost a lot of talented people, revenue was record loss and the wealth of the nation shrunk. It got so bad that they put the blame on the Jews.... the ones who had stayed and converted to Christianity, and well, persecuted them, eventually expelling them too. Artisans, merchants, and trader classes reached levels so low that there were shortages, and a major backfire of this expulsion was that many of these Jews who left ended up settling in The Lowlands (The Lowlands happily accepting and welcoming and recruiting them), kicking off the Dutch golden and silver ages and many of these directly helped build what was to become a global trading empire, and a major thorn for the Spanish. The ones who didn't settle in the Lowlands, went to The Ottomans and North Africa where they established themselves with some ending up in positions of power and authority and some as advisors to the Sultan, where they again were a thorn for The Spanish, and this time for the Portuguese as well.

The question is badly posed since France emerged victorious from the war of succession of Spain by succeeding in defeating a coalition of several European states against them including the United Kingdom, the Holy Roman Empire and the Netherlands. King Louis XIV achieved his essential war goal namely the maintenance of his grandson the Duke of"Anjou became Philip V on the throne of Spain with its vast colonial empire especially in South and Central America preventing the Netherlands and the United Kingdom from taking control. France thus managed to vassalize Spain with its colonial empire which had been its enemy for two centuries and the 1st European power at the beginning of the reign of Louis XIV. France preserves most of its own colonial territory since the United Kingdom gave him back the strategic city of Louisbourg in Canada against part of the city of Madras in India occupied by the French.The French conceded to the British Acadia and Terre Neuve in Canada and the island of Saint Christophe in the West Indies, but retain most of their possessions in the West Indies, India, Canada and Louisiana within the present-day United States so named in honor of King Louis XIV a territory that is larger than the present state of Louisiana, since it corresponds to 13 of the current states of the United States of which some cities have retained their French name (Detroit, Saint Louis, Nouvelle Orleans). Indeed, the English, Dutch initially wanted to recover part of the Spanish colonial empire in return for their acceptance of the succession to the throne of Spain of the grandson of the king of France Louis XIV, which the latter thus managed to preserve"intact Spanish colonial empire, abandoning the Italian possessions of Spain to the Holy Roman Empire. France expanding with some territories taken from Savoy and the principality of Orange hereditary land of the dynasty ruling the Netherlands and England. In reality, the great losers of this war were the Netherlands, which could not seize part of the Spanish colonial empire as initially envisaged by them and sacrificed their navy, which hitherto competed with the British, French and Spanish navies. From the war of Spanish succession, the Netherlands became like Spain a secondary European power, supplanted on the commercial and maritime level by the Kingdom-Uni and France who allies until the end of the 17th century with the Stuart dynasty will become direct rivals and compete in subsequent wars during the 18th century and until the early 19th century. Thus, Louis XIV was right to accept the military test by refusing to cede the Spanish colonial empire to the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, which would have immediately strengthened the maritime and commercial power of the Dutch and British.
