This instrument is extremely rare! As far as we know, this may be the only known example of such an instrument. We believe this to be a soprano Helicon. It was made by C.G. Conn Elkhart, Ind. and New York. It is pitched in the key of Eb, and has a bore size of .500". It was made in approximately 1900. This is without question one of the most rare instruments ever in our shop! we will be offering this for sale very soon. Please let us know if you are interested in this piece of American history!!

You really MUST play it! I want to hear this instrument very badly! What do you think the odds are of us getting to hear this played?

K. I know I'm late to the party, but better late than never. So first off, this isn't a soprano anything. It's obviously a marching alto horn and was designed to have slides for F and Eb, as is typical. Conn did, apparently, make an Alto Helicon way way back, but this is nothing like that. If this horn was ever given a designation, it would be stamped on the leadpipe at the receiver. This is either someone's custom order horn (yes, that used to be a thing) or a rejected design for a marching Alto Horn. It might seem odd to silver plate and dolly up a prototype, but not any more odd than custom ordering a 7" bell. That's pretty small for this sort of thing. The design itself makes sense. Keep the .500" bore from the existing Eb Alto Horns, make the bell smaller to focus the sound, wrap it in a circle to appeal to the French Horn players. I imagine that it wouldn't take long to figure out why this is the only one of its kind, though. Two words: HEARING LOSS

It's cute & really light weight. It's basically a Circular Eb Soprano Flugelhorn

Very cool, Mike! Get Joe Murphy out of Nashville to come play that thing! He's one of the best Eb Helicon players I've ever heard or worked with, and I'm betting he'd sound freaking great on that little one too.

Check with Dr. Margaret Downie Banks at what used to be called the Shrine to Music Museum. She's an expert on the Conn company. She helped me identify my 1890 to 1920 helicon stenciled Carl Fischer New York which has two serial numbers. One for Fischer and one for Conn. The early Conn serial number list burned up in Conn's factory fire in the 1920s so the exact year of manufacture has to be guessed by looking at catalogs and ads of its time. Now then... PLAY THAT THANG!!!
