Great informational video Daru! I would caution you against using a chrome plated socket on an impact driver. If the chrome plating fractures during impact, the results could be severe lacerations from the sharp edges. Always use a non plated socket when using an impact!

Where is all of this coming from. My father owned a garage for over 60 years and almost always used chrome plated sockets even with large impact wrenches. I've never seen a socket of any type shatter, maybe the Chinesium ones can do that but we didn't use those.

You should also beware of using chrome plated sockets in city environments as drive by shootings are more frequent.

@shannonwilliams6623 as someone who has been cut by chrome plating on sockets not even using an impact, no. It is very wise advice... and to further comment regarding the auto shop. My family had a garage too, and this was forbidden for the same reason. My FIL even told my (now BIL) that he would not be allowed to work with an impact if he will not invest in the regular uncoated impact sockets... the only exception was a set of special wheel nut sockets they had.

I have real trouble believing this one. In many decades I've never once seen a chrome plated socket shatter -- or any socket, for that matter. My parents and their siblings were all blue collar. None of these folks or their friends had trouble with sockets (save for picking the right size.)

Hello Daru , Recently I installed a railing for my brother's wife going out to the patio and the patio is made with bricks and cemented in , The mounting holes were about 3/8 of an inch diameter which didn't have much play for the anchor bolts that came with it So what I did for more accuracy , After marking the holes I used a center punch and the first thing I did when I started drilling is I drilled an 1/8 inch pilot hole because the brick was rather hard material and to keep the drill bit from wandering and of course vacuumed out the holes , Then drilled the required diameter holes ,By using a center punch and drilling a pilot hole That made it alot easier to drill the holes , Especially when drilling into brick which can be really tough material , and because of the pilot holes , I didn't have to put near as much pressure on the drill , After drilling the pilot holes , The masonry bit drilled into the brick like a hot knife going through butter , I used to hate drilling masonry because the drill bit would wander and having to put alot of pressure on the drill , But using a center punch and drilling a pilot hole made a huge difference and no more problems with holes not lining up So to prevent drilling holes that won't line up and straining yourself from having to put alot of pressure on the drill , The center punch and pilot hole works wonders , Ever since I tried it I always use that method when drilling masonry , Anytime I drill into masonry or metal , I always start with a pilot hole which makes it alot easier I definitely agree with you 100% on using screws instead of nails for wood because of the much greater holding power you get with screws , There are some people that don't realize that a nail displaces wood to achieve it's holding power but over time as the wood gets old , The nail loses it's holding power But when I pick out a drill bit for the pilot hole for the screw , I drill the holes so that the screw displaces the wood a little bit which gives the screw a much better bite and keeps it from backing off , You want screws to displace wood so they have a moderately tight fit going in without splitting to achieve the best holding power

I'm curious why it seems to be the norm to drill into a new solid concrete (that you poured yourself), as opposed to installing something into it at the time it's poured, so it's embedded when the concrete dries.

Embedded anchors are arguably better, not as strong in shear, but also much harder to get them exactly where you want it, as you’re usually pouring multiple footings at once. Embedded anchors are superior for uplift and are needed on a house, not really needed on a deck.

If for some reason you can't find an impact-rated socket, your next best option is a regular 6-pt socket. But here's the deal: Go to the store and buy an impact set so that you also reduce the chance of damaging the screw head.

hello and thanks for sharing the info, question for you - bought the 5/8 titen hd 6 inch bolt (THDB62600H6SS) and am going to put it into a concrete base. I also bought a 5/8 concrete bit SDS Plus.(5/8 Inch x 12 Inch SDS Plus Rotary Hammer Drill Bit). My first question is did I get the right size drill bit(5/8s) for the 5/8 titen bolt. And if so, what size socket do I need and can I use a standard dewalt (with hammer accessory) drill to drive it in. Lots of questions, be great if you could supply some info, thanks.

This looks like a great way to update my 30 year wooden patio cover I built, the mistake I made was resting the 4 x 4 post on the concrete, the straps I used come up about 10" from the ground, they are sitting on a patio cover and a 5 gallon size hole in the ground beneath it, all approved my the county. Since you are in Canada and I am near Palm Springs you can come down and do a video on up grading during your white out winter, LOL. I am just trying to be helpful.

Those anchors are extremely strong. It's a wood post- it will shatter to toothpicks before it could damage that anchor. If it was a big steel post you might want to put in more than one anchor but a wood post doesn't really need it.

Yes yes for safety, but mostly durability always use proper impact sockets. The chrome version made in America can break or shatter, but exploding with a force to cause bodily injury is not only rare, but virtually unheard of. That same caution can be applied to the impact gun breaking and somehow exploding lke a grenade, its possible right, Lol. Do accidents happpen yes so wear your proper safety protection and things will go the way they go. But getting carried away with your personal life experience as fact when there 8 BILLION people around you just screams entitlement, dont be like that guy.
