How to dig a post hole and a simple trick in hard ground

You can also use a long steel pry bar to stab and loosen up the hard ground. The pry bar method will keep the hole dry and will chew up rock.

Get hold of a three foot metal bar with a circumference of approx 3 inches and drive it into the soil using a sledge hammer, hammer it in until you reach a depth of around 12 inches, pull the bar out and repeat every 5 inches from the original start point round the post until you have 9/10 holes (like a large pepper pot). Wear protective clothing and safety glasses then blast the 'pepper pot' area with a pressure washer and the dirt flies out.Tip: Make sure you aim the PW in the direction of your most annoying neighbour. Do this when they are out, then watch the expression on their faces from your window when they return, sure helps make your day.

My idea of a proper post hole is to make it bell shaped or conical. That is if you're going to cement it. Just make it twice as wide at the bottom, put an inch or 2 of gravel on the bottom, set your post in and add concrete. Depth of hole depends on how much post is to be above ground. 2 foot deep should be minimum.

I borrowed a post hole digger from my dad but all I have is a garden hand shovel. You think I can still do it or should I try and get a sharpshooter? I only got 1 wood post to put in.

Sharp shooter would be a big help but you can dig one post hole with just a post hole digger may take a while but you can do it

It's called a post hole digger. Most hardware stores have them and buy the ones with fiberglass handles. They hold up many years more than the wooden ones

Really depends on what part of the country. some east texas areas you will hit sand. around the mesquite TX area your going to hit shale about 8 ft down. and that stuff is rock and hard to dig in.
