Hey Sarge, We just rode out this hurricane and it may have been the worst storm we have seen in the 26 years we have been here. After action is a great idea to better prepare for the next one. Strengths: 1. Battery backed solar power: we lost power for 3 days and running on the solar was 80% as good as the utility. Only thing to improve on is a soft start well. We did run the well on solar but it was harsh starting it. 2. Food and water: No problem 3. AC: We ran three AC units off the solar, two all night 4. Fuel: We stocked up 50 gallons of gas, 100 gallons of diesel and 500 gallons of propane so no problems 5. Transportation: Topped of the gas truck and charged the EV prior to storm. Charged EV off solar after the storm. 6. Buildings: Recent installation of metal roof paid off. No damage to the house or garage 7. Backup Generators: Had them ready but were not needed Weaknesses: 1. Internet: we lost it and only way to get outside info was the phone. If cell tower went down we would have been blind. Note: None of our radios worked for the NOAA weather station. We may need to look into a Starlink Mini Opportunities: ? Threats: 1. We have extensive security in place including proximity sensors and cameras that all worked through the storm 2. The neighborhood I live in is not a place a criminal would likely target (consequences are severe) Thanks!

Starlink mini is looking like a good idea, you can pause the monthly subscription, just a $600 up front cost. Could be used on some vacation trips, I hear the Alaskan highway doesn't have the best cell coverage.

Hey Sarge “wot” up listening to your stories. Actually when the power was out here few years ago. It seemed like some didn’t have lighting covered well besides a phone especially considering the wide, budget friendly options available like solar lights. I actually used one to take a shower.

Love this topic!!! It’s good to reflect on what worked well and what didn’t, where gaps and weaknesses are etc. I keep a camping journal and write down how we prepared, what happened while camping, and what we should do (or don’t do!) for next time. 👍 I love the SWOT acronym. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience ❤️

What do you do when you're already away from everything you have accumulated to prep with as the natural disaster begins? Like, if your family is all separated when the disaster strikes and no one can get to the home or shelter?
@PreppingWithSarge20 күн бұрын
That’s where skills and improvisation have to come in. Alway better when we can bug in where we have all our gear, our garden etc… but life sometimes has other plans for us. 🙏

@mgentile718 күн бұрын
the only prepping that would have worked is if people had the ability to store goods outside of the are impacted. When your entire house is destroyed so is your prepper stocks unless you have underground facilities that are 100% water tight.
@PreppingWithSarge17 күн бұрын
so you know that not everyone had their house destroyed right? I know several preppers in that area who were able to keep lights on, their food safe, and help their neighbors BECAUSE of the prepping they did.

@PureBloodWNC18 күн бұрын
@@PreppingWithSarge Thank you for a polite response! There are so many lessons to be learned from this one. My wife and i fared pretty decent, but as preppers, we were quite prepared for it. Will be upgrading to Starlink in the future, that was our biggest downfall, no communications. Even the Ham towers were knocked out. They are bringing in and setting up Starlink aid stations for people to use now if you can get to one. Gas and food are gone though. People are pretty much stuck in place due to the roads or lack of gas to go drive on what's left. Thx for what you do!
@PreppingWithSarge18 күн бұрын
@@PureBloodWNC the Starlink is a great suggestion. We got cut off from our friends in Asheville for 4 days and it made me really anxious for them. Fortunately they are okay, but as you know, many others are not 😢

@@PureBloodWNC they never do. They try to minimize the looting, assaults etc because they want people to evacuate… but people deserve to know the truth and of course the right to defend themselves
