Post Office suicide - Paula Vennells breaks down during inquiry

Paula Vennells is giving evidence to the Post Office public inquiry - the first time she has spoken in public about the Horizon IT scandal in close to ten years.
Between 1999 and 2015, nearly 1,000 postmasters were prosecuted on the basis of data from the faulty accounting software, and thousands more were forced out of their businesses, bankrupted or asked to pay back cash.

Vennels sent an email to staff asking for info on a person's mental health & about his family. How was she intending to pursue this search? Phone hacking, private detectives, burglary? She sounds like a tabloid editor pre-Leverson

Going forward the CEO must have ultimate criminal liability for the actions of anyone in the company that causes the company to break the law. Additionally the limited company is a legal entity and must finance any damages resulting from its or its executives or employees or sub contractors criminal actions. If no individuals within a company can be identified as jointly or severally responsible for the company's illegal actions then the CEO of the company must be equally liable for the result of the company's actions as if they had personally committed those illegal actions. The law requires a change.

@@01r1sh I think they are genuine tears, but not for the victims, for herself. Self-pity and inability to cope. She does not seem to be a strong personality, promoted above her ability. One of the previous witnesses said that at a meeting with PO people, she seemed to be the weakest one there, not like the boss she was supposed to be.

She has ultimate responsibility as the appointed CEO.... If she was (as she claims) as unaware of the extensive serious issues going on for such a long time then she was clearly incompetent in the role as CEO, and the competence of the people who appointed her should be reviewed imho. Quite frankly I do not accept she was as unaware as she claims. I am reminded of the phrase "With great power comes great responsibility". I haven't seen/heard much evidence of her demonstrating those qualities during her (and other's) testimony. She was well remunerated over her time as MD & CEO and clearly failed miserably in her duties and responsibilities.
