Post pounder

My Daughter wants a horse, being as our ground is hard packed sandy clay, normal hammer style pounders won't work. I had to fab up a heavy duty tamper style pounder to get the job done.

Hey BentRZR! Awesome. I am Freakin' impressed. Those who aren't NEVER spent an eight hour day with a hand post hole digger. Then tried the Auger. Then tried the Hammer one. All better than the one before. I have been thinking along these lines for my upcoming pasture project. It is the best method I have seen yet. Would love more technical details. Model Compactor number, dimensions of your accessory plate. Notes on lessons learned. This IS the future of post hole setting.

Excellent tool!.. I use my compact tractor bucket to push T posts in but there is no way it has enough hydraulic pump to drive this implement.. Guess thats why post hole augers were invented..:)

I know I just commented a few weeks ago, but man o' man is this cool. I really need just alittle guidance on the adaptor plate. You obviously have skills and imagination, in addition to being a great Dad. I am getting ready to do 26 acres of pasture fencing. I was dread, sorry DREADING! getting the posts in. This would be such a great solution. I can rent the Skidsteer, but I am considering buying the Ho Pac 400 and doing exactly what you did. Then when I am done all the fencing , maybe renting it out or selling it. It costs about $4000 to buy new. But then it would be worth it not to hand dig all those holes. Any info or even a discussion of the plate fabrication would save me a lot of trouble and time. I have read every comment from start to finish. Thank you for any info. Being as you're a Fire fighter and you served your country, I would be honored to assist a bit more! The plate adapter fabrication is fairly straight forward. Look at the Skidsteer mount with no attachment on it (no bucket or forks). There is a groove on the top where the skid steers top plate fits in, there is a bend in the adapter plate so it fits the contour of the mount and at the bottom, there are 2 holes in the plate where the mounts locking pins fit through. I took 1/4" plate steel, bent it in my brake to fit the contour but you can either use 2 pieces and weld them on an angle or mark a line where it needs to be bent, cut it 90% through with a zip disc, bend it with your hands and weld along the ":Score" line. At the top, weld a strip of plate steel to form a groove for the mounts top to fit in. Weld supports on either side of where the mount fits in so it won't bend after use. When plumbing in the hydraulics, remember that the big hose is the return. You never want to run the unit in reverse so check on the tamper for direction of travel and ensure you have the hoses ran correctly! You can shoot me an email any time if you need more help! A great idea to use the HoPac to pound 180 post in 10 hours.I have a buddy with a 50 acre farm and needs to put a perimeter fence around and divide into multiple pastures for a heard of Highland cattle. I can rent a HoPac for a couple of days. Is that the Allied Construction Products HoPac 400? Their manufacturing plant is in Cleveland. i work with their Marketing Dept in a PR and Advertising free lance capacity. That's a great application, I'll forward this video for the Marketing Dept.

I never thought of using a rope with a weight until after...dang it! And you could have it's length adjusted to hit the ground at the desired depth...hindsight is 20/20 eh! On your skidsteer mounting plate above the frame of the HoPac there seems to be a steel rib welded to the mounting plate going around the frame of the HoPac ???? Is this correct? Believing that it must be to distribute the vibrations of the HoPac more evenly on the plate frame ?? Also wondering it the HoPac is welded or bolted to the plate frame? I am thinking welded. What are the dimensions of the steel used for the "rib" surrounding the HoPac frame ??? I've been viewing this video for a couple years now and finally have everything to put one of these drivers together ! Hi John, The mounting plate was pre fitted to the Skid steer system to ensure it would fit prior to welding it to the hoe pac frame. There is a stiffener welded to the mounting bracket to keep it from flexing.

enough oil volume would be the issue. 13 gpm would be the minimum, many up in the low 20. Most compact tractors can't get more than 10 gpm. Skid steers, because of their motor drives always have a higher capacity.

Hugh, Although I never observed this, my neighbor said he rented a heartland post pounder to build his fence. Using the same size posts, he said it was taking up to 45 minutes to do each post. The hard packed clay/sand in this area is ridiculous ! Never heard of Shaver pounders but as with anything, it depends on weight! I chose my method because of previous experience with tampers and oilfield pile driving...

@@BentRZR I had a Shaver 10 mounted on a Ditch Witch and pounded average 1/4 mile fences in a couple hours....that's 4" flat posts in Iowa. I fenced for 13 years and loved it for the most part doing quarter mile five strand barb in 7 hours and woven in about 8 1/2 hours. A pounder is the only way to go in my opinion. I did all my fence by myself. Im in NC now and did one fence here ...never again...whole state is rock...lol. Your set up might work better here than my pounder.

I really like this idea. Did you weld the post cup to the plate. Also do you think it matters if the cup is bigger to handle larger posts or does in need to fit fairly close to the size of the post and maybe have an adapter for bigger or smaller posts.

The Posts cost 2500, the 2x6 3000 and the paint was 1500. I fabbed up board spacers that hung off the top of each post and held the 3 boards in place so I could fasten them. I used an airless sprayer to paint the fence, it was much faster!

What size hoepac is that? Ive got an allied 1600 i mounted on my cat 297 but i mounted it the other direction...from the end. I found it shook the machine too much though. Perhaps from the side is a better route, yours runs smooth! Works fantastic on the excavator and with the hardened spikes i built it will break rock. I might have to try your mounting style to see if it runs any smother. Or maybe thats a little smaller hoepac than a 1600

The reason I mounted my hoepac sideways was: the mounting plate would fit easier and the vibration would be absorbed left and right by the loader arms. I think if you mount yours the same as mine...you will have a "Killer" post pounder!

+BentRZR thanks for the info. The impulse force on the 1600 is almost double the 1000 which i think would be the next size down but i never thought of it that way. It might make all the difference sideways. I do run my cap off center and my spike off center as well to generate more of a slap and hammer effect. Did you just weld your quick attack direct to the side of the hoepac? I might fab up some mounts so i can can still swap from excavator to skid steer. Cheers!

+Travis 297c Yes, I welded mine directly to the hoepac. I was worried that if I just bolted it, it could come loose and fall on whoever is holding the posts...lol An allied hoepac here in Alberta runs about 11,000, which is why I bought an American brand, so I didn't need to worry about it. It cost me 3 grand and is the same size as my allied 1000, which has about 8,000 lbs of hitting force.

+Andy Everett I wouldn't weld on either end, you won't have much striking force. You should only weld a cup on the downward 1/2 of the plate (when watching it cycle from the cab, you will see there is a circular rotation to the plate). If you weld on the opposite (up) side, there will be little to no effective strike. You can add bolt holes to your cup, so you can bolt on the T-bar adaptor. Let me know how you make out...

+Mark vanDonkersgoed My John Deere CT332 skidsteer handles this hoepac with no issues, with it mounted sideways. I think the limiting factor would be the flow that your skidsteer can provide. If you go with a larger hoepac, you may be disappointed because the heavier counterbalance may not revolve fast enough to give you the same (or more) hammer as a smaller one, because the skidsteer's pump can't flow the required gpm of fluid. Maybe you should hook the hydraulic lines from the hoepac to your skidsteer and try it first, before committing to the build?

@@Cartwrightoutdoors I checked the max flow of the hoepac and compared it to the skidsteers output and pressure. Ensure you have the hoepac mounted properly! I mounted mine sideways, so the vibration didn't transfer directly to the frame. When you hook the lines up, make sure you know which way the hoepac spins and only flow that way. If you spin them in reverse, the locking bolt inside the motor will back off and you will loose all function. The rotation should be marked on the unit.

Alright Craig, post a video showing your hydraulic pounder completing 5- 6" posts in a row without shutting the video camera off. This will give us a good time reference to prove your claim! Be careful because if you dry-fire those hydraulic breaker bar units, you will destroy them in minutes! It took me and a friend a full 10 hours just to pound the posts with the tamper and the reason I chose a tamper over a breaker bar (which is what you are referring to) is because we have used plate tampers attached to track hoes to drive Steel piles in the patch for 25 years, yet I have never seen one breaker bar used...not once. Thats because they will detonate internally if you fire them with no resistance on the output end. As for pushing the posts and hanging 3 layers of 2 x 6 boards in a 12 hour day.......pfft!

BentRZR 320 post in 8 hours 12 foot red pine (shit posts) for apple trellis, red rocky ground. You cut scenes its not 1 video shot the ground you got is definitely sand.... with a hydraulic boom i can pivot, tilt back and fourth. If im having a tough time with roots rocks etc i can plum the boom with post completely like a nail gun. Three sided boom for safety,

+waylon miller Sorry Waylon, I just seen your question now. The unit is called a vibratory plate tamper. It is used to compact dirt. I fabricated an adapter plate to attach it to my skidsteer and modified it a bit to handle posts. The tampers cost between 3000 and 12,000 "new" depending on manufacturer but you can pick them up at auction fairly cheap.

As stated above, My children get good marks in school, they are into sports, don't do drugs and are very respectful...I will do everything in my power to reward them for positive behavior.

Hey SterlingK, There will always be dimwitted keyboard warriors who try trolling for arguments. I agree with you, they have issues that can't be resolved by discussion, so we are better off ignoring them. I could block their posts but I find it more satisfying leaving them for the amusement of others! Cheers!
