You say followers and likes don't matter but isn't it true that when a brand is unknown potential customers need some form of social proof before buying and how much following a business has on social media is a form of social proof?

It can be far more fulfilling and fruitful to focus on the bigger picture of your business strategy, rather than worrying over vanity metrics such as followers and likes. Having a smaller following that shares and engages with your content and clicks through to your website can be much more powerful, especially in these days when more and more people want to support small businesses, and your followers and likes will grow organically from there!
