@@Briggie Strongly disagree. The red scare/MacCarthyism was a significantly more severe mass outrage and attack on free expression. Harmless books were banned, neighbors reported each other for wrongthink, journalists were silenced, blacklisted and even jailed as communists for as little as thinking that removing the rights of workers is kinda cringe. The most blatant thing I can think of today where systemic power is regularly used to silence people is the anti-BDS laws in the US. As far as moral outrage reactionaries are doing a great job at getting harmless books and basic education banned from schools, the attack on women's and queer people's rights has been pretty brutal too but it's not like these things weren't present at the time of the red scare or satanic panic. The "outraged mobs" are nowhere near as successful as they used to be and don't have nearly as much government support. Twitter is a nightmare and people often dogpile others for dumb shit but compared to being jailed for having mildly progressive politics? Naahhh

Back in early 2016 I picked this up because people were talking about how good PORTAL 2 was, so accidentally ordered POSTAL 2. To this day, it's one of my favorite experiences. The AI is so dynamic as they can cause illegal chaos without you having to do anything, and the amount of freedom you have over your environment is insane. There are moments in this game that are as cinematically implemented as Half-Life 1, and the fact that the game's story isn't anything over-the-top and is just *"hey cool guy, go do some daily normal-human chores and then return home like a normal human would"* upheaves the realism. No stupidly unreal heists, no bullcrap apocalypse futurism, no microtransactions (?), it's just you going to the store and coming back home, with many absurdities here and there that could happen in real life. You FEEL like you're in the game, because the of how much control you have over your character plus how many things can be interacted with PLUS how "down-to-earth" everything is. Want to chuck a shovel at a dog? You can do that IRL. Want to buy milk at an indian-ran grocery? you can do that IRL! Want to get people to sign a petition, or visit someone at the hospital, or join a boycott? you can do that IRL! Where's your GTA now? It's Quality over Quantity, and GTA would never step this far while somehow at the same being this... "peaceful" about it.

With such witty and convincing remarks as "Would you sign this petition?" and (which I may be misremembering since I played this game from an actual physical disc back when the government of my country were actually trying to get this banned) "Are you going to sign this petition or do you forfeit that right to your surviving family members?" About the whole violence thing, most people who play video games don't play them just for the violence. This is why hatred is largely forgotten while postal 2 is remembered as a cult classic. People who don't play video games see them at a very surface level with no context, which makes them seem like senseless violence for the sake of senseless violence.

@rompevuevitos2223 жыл бұрын
The whole "if you play violent games you'll be more violent" assumes the human being is way more simple than it actually is For starters, getting a taste of participating in violence unlike movies where you are just an spectator, give you a clear look to the real consequences which most people don't really pay that much of a mind towards If you still think that murder is ok after seeing what it is in a closer aproach, then the issue is in you as a person, not in the game, and if anything might help as a diagnosis tool Kids are more impressionable, yes, but if a game can convince them violence is good, what makes you think a movie or the news themselves won't? that's where parenting has to take charge It is often smart to show kids bad things about the world when they are ready (including violence) so they can be tough about it more effectively It's not the same to simply say "don't do drugs" Than to show the kids the consequences of drugs and then tell them "this is WHY you shouldn't do drugs"

I appreciate the emphasis on transparency in regards to your thoughts concerning "Do violent video games cause violence?". In my opinion, I think the most probable/reasonable answer given all the factors in place is a general "No" . And at least when it comes to the sociology/criminology majors I met in university. They came to the same conclusion. It's the same with movies/books/etc. (Though I understand that in this particular case, games are a very direct medium due to its interaction.) The "cause" when it comes to acts of violence could better be traced to issues concerning the individuals who could potentially commit the crime. Instead of the games themselves being the determining factor.
@CharlatanWonder3 жыл бұрын
There's also a million other theories at play here like "aging out of crime" paired with how a lot of people who play video games tended to be younger, but I have neither the time now the proper certifications to go fully in depth on all of them.

also you forget this game was referenced in a law and order SVU episode when a guy talks about using a cat for a silencer in a video game more on videogame violence: maybe instead of just looking at eric harris's WADs we can listen to sue klebold's work in understanding her son dylan, who was the other columbine shooter. she has done a lot of work on understanding everything and has spoken and written about it extensively with all profits going toward further research, and she is not of the opinion that videogames were particularly relevant to what happened. shes a badass

Videos like this are always interesting to me. I'm currently in my late-20's and Postal 2 launched when I was an impressionable 11-12 year old. It was indeed part of my childhood, but I never actually played it until 2013. Gaming media wouldn't shut up about it back in the day, you never saw it on store shelves and never knew anyone who actually played it, but boy howdy, you couldn't turn on G4 without eventually seeing a segment on "that offensive shooter" and how insane and controversial it was. Point being, I don't think a lot of people bought it necessarily, but it's existence was definitely mainstream knowledge. I feel like I understand most of the game's humor. I can assure you, it still comes off as absurdist and nonsensical even if you do get the references. It's very much in line with what adult humor was back in the day. At the risk of sounding like the whiny millennial I am, some of it does rub me the wrong way ... partly because I do understand some of the historical context. Not to say that I think the game should be censored or anything, but just to say that sometimes a something stops being funny when you understand the general attitudes that probably lead to the inclusion of it in the first place. Postal 2 is an interesting game. It never strived to be anything but a stupid albeit fun sandbox shooter. Yet in doing so, it became a strange time capsule of 2003. "Kitschy trash" is probably the single best term one could use to describe Postal 2, and yet it leans sssoooo hard into being nothing but that, that it became historically significant in it's own right.
